I was gifted stocks on the London Exchange so I've used skype to call London a few times. I already had skype and it was much simpler than finding a calling card or alternate service.
I use a Simple bank account to save. It is pretty cool. You set up various goals and then give an amount that you want to save and the date that you want it saved by, and it automatically hides money from you everyday and puts it towards that goal. The money does not leave your account, but when you check your account, by default, you are given a "Safe to Spend" number which is your total balance - goals - pending payments. In essence it gives you that separate bank account that you talk about, without the hassle of managing a separate account!
We have family in Spain and we use both FaceTime and WhatsApp. We have to avoid calling and texting obviously so WhatsApp is perfect for chatting and sending pictures during the week. FaceTime is what we use on the weekends when we can find time to chat face to face so to speak. Without these two apps we would most likely only be able to communicate via email or every two years when they visit. We also have family in other states and primarily communicate via text or Facebook. This way we can see and share things going on almost everyday. Facebook is amazing to not only keep in touch with family and friends but it allows you to keep up with so many people at once. Although a bit less personal, it takes a lot of time to connect with people, let alone many people. With busy schedules that do not line up, it would be nearly impossible to stay in connect with friends and family from out of state. Not only are these apps convenient, but they definitely do not break the bank.
I stay connected with out breaking the bank by making calls with my laptop and also using FaceTime on my phone. We can visit and chat with my parents with out having to buy a plane ticket!
I email my daughter in college or we talk on the phone. Same for other family members. Facebook is great for seeing pictures of family & friends who don't live nearby.
We use Skype at some of the holidays (like Easter) or birthdays when college kids can't come back home. We set up laptops by the dinner table and it's like they are right there with us!
I Skype with my bestie who lives 1000 miles away! My family and friends are scattered throughout the world and we use Facebook to keep in touch. It's lovely to make new friends, keep up with old friends, and stay in touch with family members there. I love being connected in such a way!
It's easy to save with Skype! Computer to Computer calls are free (which is what I do the majority of) and you can even call landlines for better rates than the phone company! With Skype there's really no need for a landline :)

International phone service wasn't in our budget, but we actually communicated more while they were in Europe than when they were on their US campus! Using an Itouch, they could Skype anytime they had access to free internet. My favorite experience was when our daughter Skyped the Olympic torch parade in London. She was standing just outside the entrance to the subway, I mean "tube", which has free public internet access. Talk about the next best thing to being there!!! We got tours of many places they visited, street views from internet cafes, and detailed visits from their Oxford campus....all real time. It was awesome and best of all-free!554
