Skype is absolutely how we stay connected with our family and friends across the US and the world. Our little girl is able to see her grandparents and cousins. It's wonderful and will continue to be so important as a possible long-distance relocation is pending. Also, being able to make calls and have a local number as well is essential to keeping our cell phone bills within their plan limits.
Skype has saved me so much money thoughout the years because it has allowed me to call friends and family internationally. I went from having to throw down upwards of $50 dollars here and there just to buy those calling cards that I would quickly burn through. However, it is has done so much more than just save money. It has saved me in moments where I need to contact someone as soon as possible and I can't find my phone. It has saved me heartache when I can't be with my loved ones by facilitating face to face communication. I could go on and on. The most significant memory I have is getting the chance to Skype with my 100 year old grandmother. I will never ever forget that. It was both comical and touching to be able to talk to her thousands of miles away. Skype might save money but most importantly it allows for real human moments to be shared.
I send ecards to my family and friends for all occasions. With many options to choose from, I can always find an appropriate message. They are animated and musical.
We use Skype to keep in touch internationally - it's cheaper than a long-distance plan! We also send old-school letters. It's fun to get something in the mailbox!
I save money by voice chatting with my friends back in Thailand. I was an exchange student in Thailand and skype is a great way to stay in contact and keep my language skills
I live overseas temporarily and don't own a smartphone so to keep in touch, I adapt to the time difference. I set up an 'open line' Sunday evenings with Skype open. While I do laundry and clean in my apt., I get surprise calls from everyone! Predictably, my parents and best friends call in, too so sometimes we get to do group chat!
I also work in freelance, so I set up a separate Skype account with my professional title and organize calls with clients or - if necessary-buy Skype credit to call their cell phone or landline. It's easy to call anywhere with it!
I only pay $10/month for phone usage... here's how:
For local friends, we arrange a lot of our plans on facebook and email so I rarely use the phone. I have one for emergencies and free texting (in case I'm running late, as is often the case)! I live overseas in Italy while I have friends and family around the world. I own an old-school flip phone with a local Italian number ($US 10 per month for pre-pay!).
To keep in touch, I adapt to my loved one's needs. Some are always on Gmail, so I can do Google chat with them without any planning beforehand. Others don't have a Gmail account or prefer Skype, so I organize in advance.

It helps to keep our focus on business instead of loneliness, which can sometimes happen when working long hours online. And it's great to have someone who doesn't drain me or my bank account. Even for event trips, we can share transportation, hotel costs, etc. It can literally save thousands of dollars. :)
Facebook!! Although I can get really frustrated at some of the stuff on Facebook it's definitely been a fabulous tool to keep in touch with friends and family that aren't close by.

I'm into long weekend catch-up calls when minutes are unlimited. Also, if you have T-Mobile calls made via wireless are free.

My boyfriend is has been working in Europe since January and he'll be there till June so skype is our way of "dating" in between :)
I keep in touch with most of my friends and family through Facebook - we're all on there and it's the cheapest route for us
I use e-mail and social media. Whatsapp is great for staying in touch with those in other countries.
