I don't have a gym membership- I would much rather go try to get in shape outside by walking and playing with my kid and the dog. The dog needs exercise more than I do and you can't do that at a gym.

I just joined a gym, right before the mass crowds took over. I joined a 24 hour $10 a month gym. I was surprised that I wasn't harassed for personal training like my dad was at a different 24 hour gym $10 a month gym. At $10 a month + 40 a year annual (my first year was free) I can work out on machines that have an upfront cost of thousands of dollars (even pre-owned), plus I don't have to worry about maintenance and its walking distance from my apartment... my biggest worry is canceling, since I have a history of both Snap Fitness, Bally's Total Fitness and Blast Fitness trying to charge me after cancellation

Yes. We have a gym membership. It is used primarily by our teen sons. We have long winters and the gym is essential to their wellbeing.

I do not have a gym membership under my name, but my daughter does. Her membership allows guests, so she takes me with her and I pay half of her membership, which is $20.00/month total.

I only have one because I've gone back to school. When I was in the "real world" I kept a very low hour part time job with the YMCA that allowed me a free membership to all Y branches throughout the city.

Here in the UK, extreme frugality seems to revolve around hot drinks: pegging your used teabags to a piece of string above the sink, to dry out and reuse. Or reheating your cold tea in the microwave. (BLEUUUGH!) I don't think anybody would consider rummaging through trash for pharmaceuticals and vitamins though - the take-up here is a fraction of what it is in the USA. Interesting how even within the extreme frugality niche, the norms vary country to country.

I do have a gym membership and feel that it is definitely worth it. When I started the membership, I was provided 4 free visits with a personal trainer, who set me up with a website that gives me my daily workout. I had absolutely no idea where to start and what to do at the gym when I first joined, so printing out the scheduled workouts not only helped me to know what I should be working on, but they give me a goal to reach as well. The gym has been a godsend at helping me get back into shape. The gym also has cardio and zumba classes that have been a lot of fun. They also have a day care, which, as a single mom, was a huge factor.

I do have a gym membership, to the local YMCA. I respond very well to group exercise classes, and with the member discount on class fees, I basically get the additional membership benefits (ie, the gym I'll be going to this evening instead of venturing out in the cold) for free.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Have a Gym Membership?   12 years 27 weeks ago

Nope! (It's cold here, I rarely want to work out and if I had to leave home to do it, it would never happen in this weather!) The high today is in the single digits and it was a negative number when I woke up. Yeah, I think I'll just work out at home. Besides, the gas to drive to the gym would almost double the cost!

I do not have a membership, but I can tag along with my friend!!

I don't have a gym membership. I went online and printed a list of exercises I could do while at work sitting at my desk. I take the stairs whenever possible. It is the most I will do when it comes to exercise. I am doing some exercising at least and I am also saving money.

I don't have a gym membership. I might consider it if they had a good daycare center to leave my kids.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   12 years 27 weeks ago

This is an old post but lysine works get don't take it just when you get a cold sore every day and if a sore forms take 2 a day, along with staying away from wheat, rice and well long list you can find online. Also take vitamin A, C and E along with calcium, even camomile pills and drink Black tea or grey tea. Also tea tea oil works wonders. I get them in my nose and I stick to all that and it goes away in 3 to 4 days and get them every 6 months unless the weather becomes cold and then warm back to cold and well I get one but still only 3 to 4 days. I had them for 20 years and Doctors try to give me the we got cream and meds for it but they never worked I did trail and error and found natural and vitamins works way better.

While it would definitely gross me out to reuse someone's bath water, it does bring me back to how most of our grandparents and great-grandparents did things. And they turned out fine. I think a lot of it comes down to what you are used to, and what your options are.

My husband and I have gone back to using handkerchiefs (except when we are sick and can't wash them fast enough, or when we have company) and try to use rags instead of paper towels in the kitchen most of the time. These things aren't a big deal to us and definitely save us money and are better for the environment. Our friends and family think we're a little crazy.

Some of those practices make sense in, say, rural Africa than they do in the U.S.
Don't get me wrong, some of those ideas you mentioned are disgusting and unsanitary, but I can't say I would never do them in really extreme situations. Praying that day doesn't ever come though, especially the peeing in a jar! :)

    We love the Pandora app.

Some extremes become normal in different circumstances. For example, when I was living aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean Sea, reusing water was mandatory. If it didn't rain (and we had a very dry month), you had to reuse water laundry or you'd run out of drinking water.

  • The Best Secured Credit Cards   12 years 27 weeks ago

My late husband was military, am I eligible for USAA? either insurance or a secured card? I don't want to do it wrong, but don't have time to waste if I'm not eligible either. Thanks :-)

  • Are TV's Extreme Cheapskates Going Too Far?   12 years 27 weeks ago

I cannot believe that some of these are actually practiced! The pregnant woman fishing for vitamins puts me over the edge too, wow. Logically, I understand why some folks don't want to be wasteful but some of these are just too bizarre and disgusting for my liking.

Thank you for your comment Emily. I think you raise a very important point. My sense is that in education much of our efforts have focused on traditional topics like language, math and science (cognitive intelligence) - and that's critically important. But there doesn't seem to be much of an organized effort to help young people understand social and emotional intelligence - that is, to understand themselves....what are their strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. The more we help young people become more self aware of their traits and preferences perhaps they will become better equipped to engage with others, and to discover their own life passion.
