  • Ask the Readers: Do You Buy Vouchers?   13 years 3 days ago

My favorite radio station sells vouchers at 30-60% off; they expire in 90 days. I like to buy them for restaurant meals, for the thrift store, admissions to upcoming events we want to attend, etc. I see them as a savings tool with an occasional splurge.

  • Save More Gas by Safely Following Trucks   13 years 3 days ago

You go off about how drafting causes increased energy usage by the truck, but then article you cite to back up your claim states the opposite:

"Drafting or slipstreaming is a technique where two vehicles or other moving objects are caused to align in a close group reducing the overall effect of drag due to exploiting the lead object's slipstream. Especially when high speeds are involved, as in motor racing and cycling, drafting can significantly reduce the paceline's average energy expenditure required to maintain a certain speed and can also slightly reduce the energy expenditure of the lead vehicle or object."

  • 15 Essential Life Hacks That Will Save You Time in the Morning   13 years 3 days ago

I like this list except for number 8. I'm trying to grow my hair down to my waist. I pretty much just leave my hair up and go for fast ponytails and the like. Let me just say that with my face shape I WOULD miss the length. Short hair just isn't for some people. I would suggest finding some fast 5 minute makeup (if you wear it) & style tutorials on youtube if you're female. Cutting it off is just one option.

I fail to see how an article about making kids feel comfortable in church is relevant to a "best money tips" post.

  • How Emotions Can Hurt a Home Buyer   13 years 3 days ago

Great post Emily! It seems that it mostly boils down to being willing to walk away and keeping an objective perspective.

This has gotten us into trouble a couple of times as I'm sure it has many of the readers here. I think the old tip of waiting a couple of days to see if you still feel the same way will help folks look at things more objectively.

  • How to Raise Your Kids to Be Financially Independent   13 years 3 days ago

WOW - I love the idea of picking some family stocks as a means for teaching kids how to invest. I will definitely be using this idea with my kids!

    Thanks for the idea!!!

  • Best Money Tips: Steps to Finding Financial Improvement   13 years 3 days ago

I especially like the 4 steps to prepare of the next recession article. In it William makes several good points. He says that debt is basically impatience (need it now vs. waiting until you can pay for it). I fully agree!

  • TradeKing Review: The Best Brokerage for New and Intermediate Investors?   13 years 3 days ago

I've never tried TradeKing either, but they best brokerage software I've seen BY FAR is thinkorswim. Check it out if you're serious about investing/trading. It really has the best charting software on the planet (Prophet Charts).

  • Best Money Tips: How to Make a Quick $50   13 years 3 days ago

I enjoyed the post on how to prevent buyer's remorse as I've experienced this many times. If you can fully research your purchase and avoid buying on impulse as the article suggests, you'll be able to avoid most of it!

Our neighborhood is trying to get better at organizing. Block parties are some of the best ways to get everyone together and interested in becoming a better community.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Take Surveys?   13 years 3 days ago

    I do not take surveys.

  • Wantable Makeup Edition: Beauty Treats Tailored for You   13 years 3 days ago

I have, actually! I think makeup counters and Sephora are great and super useful for a lot of people, but the way I shop (accompanied by other people, sometimes on a time crunch) doesn't really allow for a thorough "What is this and how do I not hurt myself with it" session with a makeup consultant. And even if I don't have to buy anything, I always feel like I should if the consultant spent more than a few minutes trying to enlighten me. (I know, that's an anti-frugal trait I need to work on!)

Having the products delivered to me, ready for me to experiment with whenever I feel like it, seems like a good alternative. But since it costs more than I usually spend on makeup anyway, I think I'll stick to reading style blogs and researching product reviews and testing the cheapest version I could find.

Love so many of these...especially the ones regarding nature! That's where I go to reconnect with myself. The world can get so crazy and overwhelming...taking time to just observe things as they were naturally created can be really calming and help us center ourselves.

  • Wantable Makeup Edition: Beauty Treats Tailored for You   13 years 3 days ago

Have you ever heard of Sephora? Or a department store makeup counter? No cost unless you decide to buy something, and the consultants will direct you to products you might not have tried on your own.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Take Surveys?   13 years 3 days ago

Yes I've taken surveys before. The biggest reward I received was $100 check

  • 20 Great Frugal Skills — and How to Get Them   13 years 3 days ago

One skill/frugal tip I would add is to always plan ahead when you can. This should help limit the number of impulse buys you make. Also, it will allow you to snatch up good deals on things you know you will be needing. Not being in a rush to buy something will allow you to wait for a coupon code or the item to go on sale.

  • 5 Best Amazon Deals for Monday 08/12   13 years 3 days ago

On the subject of that baby monitor... you really should write a Wise Bread article about how the best deals you can get for baby monitors are straight IP cameras, such as FOSCAM or others make. They have every feature, are cheaper, and they work with many different iphone and android apps to view the monitor on your phone, a key feature for modern parents Levana does not have.

I have 4 such IP cameras covering nursery and playrooms in my house, and I see them all on my android screen from anywhere - it looks like a professional security camera setup, with all the feeds on one screen, I double tap to zoom in on one, and can pan, zoom, listen etc from there.

"Baby cams" are going the way of standalone GPS. No one needs them anymore if they get good advice, and they are way overpriced compared to commodity alternatives.

  • 22 Reasons to Stop Drinking Soda   13 years 3 days ago

I've been trying to give up pop (I'm Canadian) for years, and it seems to be quickly reaching the critical point... quit or else...

Loved reading your post, but I have to respectfully disagree with the first reason.. the out of pocket costs. Even when it's not on sale, a 2L bottle of Coke costs less than 2L of milk... that's wrong... :-( And it's not difficult to stock up at $0.99 per 2L bottle... compared to milk, juice, even water costing more.

Don't get me wrong... I think it's a horrible choice, but it really bothers me that this poison is so damn cheap compared to other drinks.

  • 8 Ways to Boost Your Neighborhood and Your Home's Value   13 years 3 days ago

I would say that the most important theme is just to blend in, adopt the traditions in the community you are getting into, and try to take it from there. That should provide some solid foundations for your future!

  • How Emotions Can Hurt a Home Buyer   13 years 4 days ago

These are situations when the probability of making mistakes is quite high. Even one of my friend made the same mistake and now he is paying for the same. I really want to say thanks to the article as this is quite important things that they have highlighted in the article and will help the people to consider some important things those are are really required.
