Actually anything that incurres a bill in your name including utility bills, rent and even loans will build your credit. You don't have to have a credit card for building cedit. Also credit ratings just show how good you are at paying off a debt responsibly and that you have a history of being punctual and compleet with your payments.
I am glad to see you mention the envelope system. I'm just starting to take control of my personal finances and I'm currently collecting as much information about different techniques as possible, knowing that so many have failed me in the past.
I really want to thank you for incorporating the section about rewarding yourself. While I agree that everyone should build in regular rewards, I prefer to think of the whole taking control of your finances as a way to achieve the bigger rewards like self-sufficiency, empowerment, and sense of security.
I am just starting on taking care of my personal finances....after years of neglect. I really love the "give every dollar a home" concept. I recently started multiple savings accounts each with automated deposits. We will see how it goes! I am optimistic!
I'd love to know if you use a particular tool for tracking expenses. I tried an app but couldn't stick with it for more than a couple of days.
I work and have limited time for leisure reading. When I do take he time to surf the net, I look for common sense reporting. As a parent of 3 and with the climbing cost of living, your resources were extremely helpful.
Skip the dryer--hanging clothes to dry, inside or out saves 1-2 dollars per load of clothes and the tumbling wears clothes out faster, not to mention the fabric damaging heat. No dryer sheets, no electricity, put the money that would purchase the dryer into an investment account--savings and earnings in one small change in lifestyle.
Financial success means not living paycheck to paycheck and having enough saved to be comfortable in retirement. It also means having a 3-6 month emergency fund saved up in case of a job loss. It means living within your means and not going over budget.
If you choose to use fabric softener sheets, watch out for build up on the dryer lint filter screen. It can clog the screen reducing the efficiency of the dryer and increasing your energy cost.
When money issues were on the back burner and no longer a constant presence in my mind, then I knew I had achieved financial success. Being prepared for any financial emergency has given me peace of mind and security. Knowing I have monetary security for the future is my version of financials success.
Financial success to me is being debt free, earning income in a way that I enjoy, and being able to experience life without worrying about constant expenses.
For all you doubters out there, my lawn was in serious brown, patchy, condition. Mother has always used this recipe & her lawn has always been the greenest & most lucious on her block. I thought this was a long shot to try, but WOW!! My lawn is no longer brown or patchy! I've been sharing this recipe ever since!! Ingredients are so inexpensive---we did do this every 3 weeks at first, now to keep it looking nice we do this every 3-4 mos except in winter. Hubby & I true believers now! Amazing & THANK YOU for sharing!!
Financial success to me is being able to make enough to live comfortable. To be able to pay all bills, food, clothing, and have money put away for repairs, things that come up, college, wedding, retirement and more.
To me financial success means being able to plan for me and family's future (college and retirement) and still having the freedom to do the day to day things that I want to do and not be crippled by the unexpected surprises. It also means setting a good example of fiscal responsibility to my children and help ensure that they have better opportunities than I did.
For me, it means getting to live the life I want without having to pay several entities to make that happen. My focus is on making my life less expensive rather than on making more money to pay for goods/services that perhaps don't add to my quality of life.
Financial success is all about freedom to me, to not be weighed down by stuff or debt and have the chance to try new things while not having to worry about making a ton of money at a stressful job. For my finances, I hope to build up my savings more and continue contributing to retirement. I haven't achieved my perfect idea of financial success yet but am actively working towards it.

Owning a home, having retirement savings, and being able to take a vacation every year.
