  • The Benefits and Drawbacks of Credit Unions   10 years 22 weeks ago

Very nice Info and well written.

And yes there may exist more banks than credit unions, that's correct. But with 4,000 credit unions, finding an ATM is NO problem since any Visa ATM can be used.

So in reality using a bank, just for more ATMs should be a mute excuse.

  • Ask the Readers: What's Your Favorite Grocery Shopping Tip?   10 years 22 weeks ago

I rarely use store or manufacturer's coupons, because they typically are offered for food that is a) more highly processed and therefore less healthy than things I cook for myself, b) branded and therefore higher-priced (because the money the manufacturers spent on marketing is built into the price), and/or c) not stuff I normally cook with, anyway. I do scratch cooking, buy spices and staples in bulk (and bring my own containers with the tare weights written on them in permanent marker, so my life isn't cluttered up with plastic bags and twist ties), and buy produce in season that's mostly been grown close to where I live.

  • 5 Ways Life Is Amazing With an 800 Credit Score   10 years 22 weeks ago

I found out that my score was 818 when I went to buy a car, and got lowest available rates on my car loan. When I bought my house, I had no problems getting approved. The lender however told me that anyone with the score over 735 gets the best rates. 800 is definitely a good psychological mark to achieve, but I think that most lenders give you best rates if your score is considered "excellent", usually 740 and up.

Yes, but what is rubbing alcohol? If you look at packets in the shops, there is real variety. Please use real names (i.e. chemical) not colloquial ones,
    Iso-propyl alcohol is easily identifiable.

This post forgets to ask if it is hot water or cold water. If hot water and you are using a storage system then you need to reheat 1,041 U.S. gallons of water from the temperature the water enters the system at to usually around 60 degrees celsius

  • Will A Dental Discount Plan Save You Money?   10 years 23 weeks ago

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY with Aetna Vital Savings! TOTAL SCAM! When my dentist applied the discount to his Treatment Plan, I only realized 3% savings...FAR FROM the 15-50% savings promised by Aetna Vital Savings. I spent $179 on a "Family Plan" with Aetna Vital Savings and because it took me more than 30 days to figure out this scam after purchasing it, Aetna REFUSES to refund me any money! My dentist said this is one of the worst plans he has had to deal with...in many cases, the Aetna pre-determined "discount" price is higher than what my dentist charges! $179+$20 enrollment fee DOWN THE DRAIN! Drink and spit on that Aetna!

  • Can Tiny House Living Actually Save You Money?   10 years 23 weeks ago

Having lived in a Brooklyn efficiency, I have a different take on the tiny house phenom.

There's a vast variety of small homes out there. In all sizes and configurations. Some really small houses have washer dryer combos. Doing laundry at home isn't out of the question. It's the same hurdle most NYC apartment dwellers encounter.

There are workarounds for entertaining. Outdoors is a viable option for some. If you have a large group, you can always rent a space or eat out. Most of us don't host large weekly dinner parties anyway, so large entertainment spaces really aren't critical to our day to day living. As many small houses sport a larger all purpose room they can accommodate 4-6 people. Coffee or dinner with a few friends is not a problem.

Stockpiling is still an option, if it's that important to you. Try looking at the Tiny House Newsletter or even apartment magazines for ideas. People have come up with nifty solutions. Like compartments under floorboards, staircases doubling as dressers, or seating cubes with storage inside.

The biggest consideration in small house ownership seems to be zoning. Where to put it? Are there minimum size requirements in a particular area? Do you have to be hooked up to utilities? Can you live in them, (the ones on wheels), year round? That kind of stuff. Some trailer courts and RV sites are game. Some areas allow "accessory" dwellings on larger properties with bigger houses already on them.

The other difficulty is attachment to furniture and stuff. How much do I want or need? If I really like my stuff and have a bunch of it, small house living isn't for me.

The third is dealing with your own and other's perceptions. It's "OK" to take friends to a 250 square foot apartment, but not a house.

Like everything else in life, we choose what's most important to us.

  • 9 Ways You Are Sabotaging Your Weekly Grocery Budget   10 years 23 weeks ago

I agree with the above commenter. While some of the tips are helpful, overall, it is concerning when articles about saving on groceries suggest habits that remove fresh fruits and vegetables from your diet. We need MORE of these in our diet, not less.

I have a very frugal friend who used to pride herself on her very low grocery bill. Lots of casseroles and batch cooking, which usually involved (very limited) frozen veggie/fruits that are cooked/processed to the point of little nutritional value. Then the medical bills started piling up, and it was clear that her family's diet needed a change. Now, she goes to farmer's markets, pays for fresh organic fruits and veggies, and has enrolled in a local meat CSA.

Good, healthy food, sadly, is not cheap. And cheap food, in the long run, will cost you much more in other ways.

  • 8 Vile Craigslist Scams to Watch Out For   10 years 23 weeks ago

We were shopping for a vacation home to rent in Scottsdale Arizona. We found one at a very affordable price. We responded by email and received a rental agreement that we were to fill out and email back. Then to hold the house we were asked to sign up through pop money and make a deposit of $600. We returned the agreement but before depositing money we did some research on the property address. We were able to contact the actual owners of the home to find out this home was not a vacation rental and infact the pictures that were posted were not the address listed but in fact the neighbors house. Be careful out there...if it's too good to be true, it probably is!

Though it does have a low monthly fee, I cannot express how much time and money an online meal planning service has saved my family. I use emeals.com and it costs about $5 a month, but there are a ton of other similar services online, and I can say that I have cut my monthly shopping budget by $150.
The money I save by having a planned shopping lists prevents me from buying things "just because I have a coupon", or "just because its on sale."
Added bonus? I spend zero time pouring over sale advertisements and recipes, and just simply enjoy spending time with my kid.

  • 10 Really Easy Ways to Unclog Drains   10 years 23 weeks ago

I had a very stubborn slow drain in my bathroom, and after several attempts at using drain cleaner, I found that the 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar seemed to break up the buildup better, followed by 2 pots of boiling hot water and a few minutes of using a plunger. You have to stuff a wash cloth in the overflow hole at the rear of the sink in order to get enough power, but next thing I knew, the clog released and I was so relieved. Especially after Roto Rooter told me the night before that they were going to charge me $300 to snake out the pipe - NO WAY! I'm now a fan of the baking soda vinegar treatment and will use that in between to cut down on the toothpaste buildup, worked for me! Thanks for the advice!

What's worked best for me is using online shopping/delivery via Peapod. I started when I broke my ankle, but found that it was worth continuing (though only with an annual membership, individual orders are too expensive without that). It makes it easy to instantly compare prices, check ingredients, find out what's on sale, and mark favorites for things I need on a regular basis. They also accept coupons! I'd estimate that I've saved at least 25-30% just by doing this. I use the delivery service, but some areas also have a pickup option. Haven't tried any other grocery shop online services, but Peapod really works for me.
