Buying a car that was only a few years old for 12K. It had less than 20,000 miles on it and in the 3+ years we've had it, no major problems or fixes. We do regular oil changes and keep it in good condition and it has served us very well. Love my Sasha-car!
Best other not-too-expensive thing we've done is stay onsite at a Disney resort when we went on vacation there a few years ago. (Free dining totally rocks, I must say.) Stayed a week and 2 meals and 2 snacks a day per person were FREE. Saved us hundreds for our family of 4!
One massive tip which I live by is to follow cancellation holidays. These aren't necessarily last minute as they are normally around a month away, yet you can find pretty much the same holiday you were looking for, but £200 off!
Also, pack light, because we buy stuff when on holiday, and this always raises the weight of the bag, meaning we often have to pay extra for the bag going over the acceptable weight.
I love using baking soda for many things. However, please be aware that baking soda contains 1000 mg of sodium per teaspoon. The recommended daily allowance for a healthy person is 2400 mg. If you are pregnant, or have compromised circulation in any way, your doctor may cut down even on that amount. So just be very careful about using baking soda as an antacid or for sour stomach.
I think your article has very good points, and I appreciate your taking the time to do the research on costs and report it as well. Family members and myself have tried both ER and the urgent care centers for various things. However, I must add that if it's something in any way unusual, you may be better off going to the ER, because while those at the urgent care centers are very kind and have the best of intentions, some things are beyond their knowledge or resources. Thus, misdiagnoses and not-quite-right treatment for the ailment are more likely to occur, as has happened in our case. If you do have the luxury of weighing the pros and cons before deciding which place to go, please do.
Do not let this go. Get them removed. If let go they can grow deeper and you will have to have deep gouges out of your face to get rid of it. If your doctor says not to remove, get another opinion. Line up a plastic surgeon for after surgery.
I am also on the west coast of FL and our AC has been out on and off since AUGUST (aka hell in FL). Now the AC guys came back for the 4th time since August....and I overheard them talkin about 700 bucks or something and some sort of leak. Well, apparently our landlord has to give approval of course, which could take days. We live in a small townhouse with all bedrooms upstairs and windows which when open, have a slot where bugs, snakes (we have a lot of black racers) and lizards can get into. TO top it off, my 6 year old has the stomach flu and my 4yr old has a fever...and I am tapering off of my medication from a spinal surgery I just had. I had to stay on the medication for much longer than expected due to complications and therefore, my body got physically addicted even though I was not abusing it. So that...on top of my kids being sick..My husband being at work (lucky him w AC!!) ...this is very miserable. So I agree with you Cheryl....no AC in FL...no way! Not for me at least!
I definitely see the author's point, but here's my story. My husband and I live in a 2 bedroom condo in a city (Chicago) with 2 kids. Much like a poster above, the storage fees for our 5'x5' unit are significantly cheaper than buying a bigger place with more storage space. We go to the storage unit reasonably regularly. The tricycle stays in the storage unit all winter, and the sled stays in it all summer. Older child's toys and clothing go into storage when she outgrows them and get taken back out when they are appropriate for our younger child. Once younger child outgrows them, they are sold, donated, or given away.
Grilling is our new favorite way to cook. My parents have always been big grillers, because it means you don't have to clean up and oven or a stove afterward. After talking us into buying a (relatively pricey) grill that they both adored, we've found that grilling up a protein of some kind + some marinated veggies is all we need to have a healthy, well-rounded meal.
Mind you, it's just the two of us right now. I imagine it gets more complicated with kids.
I've Had accounts at both and I'll choose Credit Union 99% of the time. My reasoning is mostly because my needs are simple ,
Banks Pro's & Con's (Based off of Well's Fargo,Zions Bank & Washington first)
Pro's:
1. I have seen better % rates on Savings accounts
2. at-least 2x as many in the US and abroad
3. usually 2 to 3 times more ATM's of your bank in your city
4. More Options with types of loans
5. at the bigger banks usually a 24/7 # to speak with someone
Con's: (Based off of Well's Fargo,Zions Bank & Washington first)
1. A Ton more Fee's for multiple uses at banks
2. ATM Fee's if you don't use your bank's ATM (No Co-Op network uses as far as I'm aware of)
3. No ,say or vote on what directions / changes on what your bank does
4. I have noticed higher % rates on loans than CU's (personal observation)
5. ATM's fee's seem to be much higher.
6. Checking and Savings usually require a much higher Minimum
CU Pro's: (Based off of Delta Community CU, American First CU,Mountain Eagle CU )
1. Free Checking/savings w
2. Co-Op networking, meaning you can use other CU Branches to do your banking needs for No Fee!
3.You have a Say on Changes that happen to your CU
4. Loan Rates seem to be Lower on multiple types of loans (just personal observations)
5. Just a personal observation and I know some can argue but I think CU employee's Generally seem nicer and happier to help where as Bank Employee's it seems like your a # and less personal
6. less restrictions on Minimum balances on savings and checking accounts
7. Majority of Credit Unions are going Co-Op and that means you can goto any Co-Op ATM and they have no Fee's ( In 10yrs I have only had 1 CU Atm charge me )

I was a victim of identity theft earlier this year and I still haven't recovered from it. Bunch of paperwork and the IRS is slow on tackling the matter. Really really frustrating.

And talking from experience, please please please make LOTS of copies of the police reports. And when I say lots of copies, I mean more than a dozen! The IRS kept asking me to send copies of the same report to different offices of theirs throughout the country. Horrible bureaucracy and a pain in the butt, but it is what it is…

this is a great article ...i used to live in an hispanic community in las vegas, it was great because the carnesaria was right across the street and shopping every day was a way of life ...put the kids on the school bus and off you go to the market, yehaw..but i have now moved to a small town in az and this is not a choice we have here there are 3 grocery stores plus super walmart not much choice and the prices are really high because they know you dont have any choice... so there are trade offs for the small town living thing and groceries are one of them also the lack of diversity in food is another ...lol for the person who was talking about aldi's i found this article because i was looking to see if i could buy on line from aldi's dot com ..it is a great store and i miss it much .. but thanks for the article it raised my spirits
This article talks about corporations taking lending or financing route to enable people to purchase more products. However, corporations can also invest in stocks, gold, etc as a portfolio investment, which will also open a stream of Investment Income in addition to operational income. Several companies such as Apple, who have plenty of cash reserves can use their funds either for buybacks or dividend, or retain profits to invest in new ventures. When these corporations reach a stage where they dont have much opportunities to invest, then investing the funds makes a lot of sense.
If a significant portion of that goes to equity the company can enjoy good returns over the long term.

I went to one with my work (Americorps). It was fun, but I didn't get any job offers out of it...
We like to add a couple teaspoons to the dishwasher every other wash, or less. Keeps the plastic liner looking just great.
