We have been cable-free for the last 2 years now and I can't imagine myself ever going back. As a grad student I have very limited time to watch television anyways so I always felt like I was wasting my money by paying for cable that I didn't really get to watch. I have Netflix and, during the fall and winter, Hulu Plus. That's a total of $16.00/month on television, plus maybe one or two Redbox movies during the month. The librarys also have great selections on older movies and tv shows, and can be ordered from another library to your library for free, you just have to wait a day or two :)
In a empty spray bottle combine mint and a few drops of lavender oil.
I take a few clippings from my chocolate mint plant and put it in a tea diffuser with boiling water(like making tea), let stand in water until it is strong, add a few drops of lavender oil, or put a few flower heads into the spray bottle, or lavender massage oil. shake and spray. Keep spray bottle by the front door for you and your kids and enjoy the outdoors without the bites.
Yes, severance was not addressed in this blog. I have received severance but the company called it salary continuance and EDD denied benefits. Now I have to go in front of the judge to fight for it. I have seen second-hand information that severance pay is not a reason to deny the benefit, but I don't know exactly what the law says and how to present it to the judge.
Most of that list is useless. You're assuming that people already have money (delivering stuff??? in a car I don't have). This list should have been called "3 ways to make money today if you don't mind going to jail". Where I live, begging is illegal.
NBA league pass cannot be used to watch games that are televised on (A) your local channel or (B) national channels. So it is only useful or watching one-off regular season games which is pretty much useless.
I own a 3-bedroom house that is 84 years old. The only room I don't use very much is my guest room. I do fabric dyeing and have a dye shop set up in the basement.
I am involved in a cohousing group. We are looking at building new and sustainable. It's very exciting and I feel it would offer the best of home ownership and alleviate some of the down sides. Living in an intentional community definitely appeals to me. It won't be heaven - we are making decisions through modified consensus so meetings (which are many) are lively. The great thing about cohousing is that you have wonderful common space to interact with your neighbors AND when you want privacy, you simply close your door and enjoy your own place.
We rent, but my parents own the property, so we have a lot of the decorating benefits and pet benefits of owning, but none of the hassles! We do want to buy eventually, but we just can't afford it right now.
This is an excellent article on managing debts, Kentin.
I will add two additional points here: first, it is critical that YOU must want to regain control on your financial life. Other than talking to your creditors, you must also talk to yourself: that you got yourself into the mess and you must take the actions to get yourself out. No one else will do it for you.
Secondly, doing this is more than just managing the dollars and cents, more than just numbers. It often calls for a change in mindset, change of habits and often time, a different way of living! If the figures are overwhelming, then the changes will be even more drastic.
But as anyone who has ever risen above their debts will declare, the results will make all the sacrifices worthwhile!
It is true that some reward cards with annual fees are good as long as you are able earn a lot of reward points. I had an airline card and I was able to earn free flights. The annual fee was not an issue.
"Save yourself the headache an hassle by applying for any other card. I am suprised visa lets them get away with this. The whole staff an resolution dept. should burn in hell those thieves. They belong in jail if they want too steal from us. They will be hearing from my lawyer soon enough"
um is this a bot? visa let netspend get away with what; they didn't do anything. they stole what from us? if u are a person and not a bot, read the article before replying please because what u said makes zero sense. i've had my netspend account for several months now, never had a problem and the only thing they "steal" is $5 a month if u get their premium plan to use the card with unlimited swipes. which is completely a fair price seeing that regular banks now are charging monthly fees for checking accounts now and some as high as $8 a month. the only difference is with netspend, u wont get any checks, but who uses checks anymore anyways? the last time i wrote a check was like more than 5 years ago. no point in using checking accounts now if u have a debit card.

I'm with you. Store brands are the way to go with only a very few exceptions. I see a lot of people fill their carts with all national brands and don't really understand it. I guess they have more money to blow than I do.
I agree. Replacing kitchen cabinet hardware can do wonders and is so cheap to do. We recently changed our hardware out. The new hardware fit in the same holes as the old hardware, so it was real quick and easy to do and only costed a little over a $100.
@ Guest - Souljarette "just" cancelled it, meaning she cancelled it after all of this crap happened to her.. Of course it would be stupid to cancel a card and try to use it... She didn't do that! Re-read what Soljarette wrote. It'll make more sense now. :-)
Glad you enjoyed the article. Great tips on using other tools that have the same functions but are presented differently. I like comparing my results with online calculators, which helps me to see what assumptions that designers are using (which may or may not sync with mine).
not a stupid question. I cudn't think of five either

I own my home but it really "owns me".
I rent, but am saving up for a down payment. Renting is good right now, because I plan to move to a new state within the next year.

We got rid of our cable over a year ago and used Netflix. My husband had an issue without his sports channels, though. Internet TV, does the trick!

Probably the same as milk.

Lisa - the whole internet is at your feet, you need not ask this question. Just look under 'protein reach foods'.

I love how exercising in the morning helps me wake up -- and it makes me less antsy when I'm sitting my computer for most of the day.
OMG, fried macaroni and cheese. That sounds so decadently amazing.

Actually looks like I might have messed up the link to our 'Prioritizing Debt' post. Here it is if anybody wants to see how we did it!

We own.
