  • Make Homemade Dog Food with your Slow-Cooker   13 years 22 weeks ago

Great post! Can you comment on slow cooker food vs. raw food? I'm planning on adopting a French Bulldog and they apparently often have food allergies. A good number of site recommend a raw diet but I live in an apartment and can't be grinding and freezing huge amounts of raw ingredients. I thought that a slow cooker food might be a good option. If you have come across any information on slow cooker food for Frenchies I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

  • 10 Ways to Improve Your Decision-Making Skills   13 years 22 weeks ago

Great article. I especially like number 5. Using experience is also a good way to make decisions but not always the best. We actually makd decisions every minute of our lives. From deciding what to eat for breakfast to picking out clothes to what were going to eat for dinner, we are the cumalitive sum of our decisions. As important as what we decide to do sometimes we dont decide to do can have an even bigger impact on our lives than what we decide to do. Whatever your decisions make sure they come from within and not from external factors. YOU have to live with the consequences of your decisions.

  • How to Escape Reward Card Spending Traps   13 years 22 weeks ago

"The key is keeping purchases to a minimum and always paying off the credit card bill each and every month. Those two behaviors will ensure that you keep every penny of the (admittedly modest) rewards you earn, rather than seeing them burnt up in interest payments."

Very true! The allure of rewards can often trick people into putting unplanned items on a credit card and keeping them on there - unable to pay them off before getting hit with interest. The interest payments then end up far exceeding the "benefit" or reward of the cards, so it's very important to be aware of your spending, so you can pay off the balance in full each month. We have (and currently use) a journal, stash receipts, and use Mint.com to track our expenses. We like to use Mint.com as a status check throughout the month, but we also confirm our final tallies at the end of the month to see how everything shook out.

  • The Best Credit Cards With Airline Companion Tickets   13 years 22 weeks ago

With the Delta AmEx platinum card, one also receives a free checked bag for each person on the owner's ticket and zone 1, priority boarding. It pays for itself if used by a person who flies often. The companion ticket also pays for the fee and I use it each year to give us a nice vacation, although it is for domestic travel only.

  • My Personal Productivity Rules...What Are Yours?   13 years 22 weeks ago

Love #2, and I'm guilty of #3 and #9 (after I got a smartphone). Glad to see I'm not the only one addicted to planning and getting help with organizing, without actually getting something done. Still working on making GTD principles an ongoing habit.

  • How to Be Happy and Married: 24 Tips from a 24-Year-Old Marriage   13 years 22 weeks ago

This just makes me sad. At 24 years of marriage, my husband walked out on me, leaving me completely blindsided. He then remarried 3 weeks after the divorce was final. Now I realize that only one of us was following the things outlined here. Two years have passed since he walked out, and the pain is still palpable. My advice: Don't assume your partner shares your view of the relationship. Don't assume a long-term marriage is solid, take steps to make sure it is.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   13 years 22 weeks ago

That was my experience as well.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   13 years 22 weeks ago

Just an an anecdotal observation to add about L-Lysine. I supplement Lysine for muscle building purposes and have noticed no benefit for the prevention or treatment of cold sores. If it works for you, keep doing it. It has not worked for me.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   13 years 22 weeks ago

I have spent the money on expensive oral antiviral medications (Valtrex) and found that the window for use is either too small or nonexistant. If I had the medication on hand and took it right away it worked, but that is hard to do. I now use oil of Oregano which is digusting, but easily as effective as the Valtrex and can be used regularly as a preventative measure. I used to get cold sores from exposure to the sun, now I only get one rarely when my immune system is especially compromised. Oil of Oregano is not cheap either, but is a fraction of the cost of prescription medication.

Good tips! There are also an increasing amount of housing communities that offer exercise facilities similar to what you might see in a hotel. They might not have quite what a big health club has to offer, but still can get the job done.

  • What to Do When You Want to Quit Your Job   13 years 22 weeks ago

I have quit dissatisfying jobs, the first two to go back to school. I still cannot believe I did this! Then I decided to make my own family in my mid thirties because Mr. Right was not coming along. That caused a few compromises and I went back to work from "law school". I liked working better than finishing my last year of "law school" even though I was doing well in "law school". I simply hated law.

I nailed a job when I was five months pregnant back in 1987. I made it grow and I transferred and got a better job. I stayed at this job for years. Never made too much money but enough (low six figures when I retired). Enough to pay for good care for my disabled son. Enough to feed a pension and I also contributed $100,000 to a 401K which I do not need in retirement.

Leaving an unsatisfying job can be done. And you can benefit from it and learn from it. I am so happy I did. And I am in a super happy retirement. And, I have two sons who make me so proud. That is what really counts.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Buy Organic Food?   13 years 23 weeks ago

I rarely buy organic since it's not easy to find around here and it's more expensive. However, I try and buy from local farms during the summer.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Buy Organic Food?   13 years 23 weeks ago

We're starting our baby on organic oatmeal, but that's about it so far. Our reasoning is that we grew up fine without organic, so we're just continuing along the same path.

I buy organic milk because it is free of hormones and lasts a lot longer than regular milk.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Buy Organic Food?   13 years 23 weeks ago

I buy as much organic produce as I can, always buy organic milk and half and half, and eggs, and stock up on organic chicken breasts at Costco. I feel the extra cost is worth the increased health benefits.

  • 25 Things You Shouldn't Buy at the Grocery Store   13 years 23 weeks ago

Same in Italy. Some supermarkets, for example, have their own organic products and can be quite cheap. Even though local fruit and vegs can be even cheaper if you have access to a "real" farmers' market. On the other hand, deli cheese at a farmers' market is more expensive (though incredibly better).

  • What to Eat Every Day: A Month of Frugal Meals   13 years 23 weeks ago

Boring. Menu filled with carbs; rice, chips, bread. I'm all about fresh food and never let anything sit more than 2 days in my fridge. Sorry, but this menu is repetitive, hardly contains a balanced meal. Who eats fried rice for breakfast? Weird!

  • How Much Does a Flu Shot Cost?   13 years 23 weeks ago

I work for a temp agency, which placed me with the department of revenue, making minimum wage. The department of revenue offered free flu shots, but only for the permanent workers. I asked how much it would cost for us temps and it was outrageous. With me only making minimum wage, there's no way I could afford it. I don't yet have health insurance. Very frustrating!

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   13 years 23 weeks ago

Thank you so much for posting this! Thank the rest of you as well for your comments on this place! I may be strange, but I didn't find that it felt like I was violated, or anything of the sort. I have been looking for a separate account to keep some money set aside in for emergencies, and when this came in the mail, I was considering using it...until I poked around. I thought it was odd that I would get an actual card (normally they don't do that if you don't apply) Thank you all so much! You saved someone that really doesn't need another financial downfall, from falling into another one!!
