I personally try to go for a run every night, or play some sort of team sport. Although I do live in an area that has a nice year round climate which definitely helps.

Its really important to pay attention to expiration dates and to use what you buy. My friend bough a massage for a really good deal one time, but then forget to use it before it expired and she lost out on a 60 minute massage!

  • Preparing Financially for a Natural Disaster   13 years 37 weeks ago

Even if having a separate emergency fund for potential disasters like this was plausible, I'm not sure how much you could actually save to cover damages like those caused by Sandy. I think a lot of families have a hard time keeping enough money in one emergency fund, let alone two. Its scary to think about the financial losses that mother nature can cause.

  • 7 Secrets to Refinancing an Underwater Mortgage   13 years 37 weeks ago

You should definitely refinance only if it saves you money! The refinance calculators that I mentioned can help though certain situations like J. Money's Interest-only loan can confound those calculations.

I like to build amortization schedules to figure out whether a lower interest rate will help and recommend that approach for anyone considering a new loan -- sometimes paying a few thousand dollars, as difficult as that may be -- saves in the long run.

  • The Best and Worst Places to Stash Cash in Your Home   13 years 37 weeks ago

Ignore the 'smashing' troll. All sorts of reports, private and public, by the police, judicial and penal system say over and over again, 95+% of all robberies are "smash-and-grab", see the tv, the blue-ray player, look at the top of the dresser and in the jewelry box, check the top drawers of the dressers, and out the window. Ten minutes at most. If it's just one, he may just grab small things (jewelry, blue-ray etc.) This "As a robber I would smash everything you have and steal what fell out" 'person' is a teen who's parent's wouldn't to spank them when they got disrespectful, and now they make the rest of us pay for it. The kind of person that would do the 'smash everything' bit is a spoiled brat teen/20 something who isn't looking to rob, just to destroy because they can. They are not robbers, they are vandals. Pure and Simple.

The VCR thing is wonderful IF you and your partner remember that it's a 'safe'. Electrical outlet is a good one, the 'brand name' cans (says hair spray, is really empty can with twist off bottom) are great if there are other regular cans, freezer's a pretty good place if it's full, too much to dig out - one variant on that is make a seal a meal bag with a smaller bag with the $ in it (sealed) drop smaller bag in larger, fill larger bag with gravy etc. Electrical outlet's great IF it matches the other outlet places and color. Above florescent lights (we have one in our kitchen) above the reflector is a really safe place in our house, 9' ceilings. Back of kitchen drawers (taped in), bottom of non-mobile trash can (not in container, on bottom.)

Basically anyplace that's hard to get to, has lots of hidden corners, slots etc. and you haven't read about in a million other places

  • The Housing Market Is Finally Rebounding   13 years 37 weeks ago

Great read!!It’s about time that the housing market is getting back on its feet. Sadly, I never thought we would be getting back to how it used to be. Progress is always better than no change.

  • 12 Annoying Bank Fees and How to Avoid Them   13 years 37 weeks ago

Great read!!I enjoyed this article just because I learned quite a lot. I have some paper statements mailed to me and some are online. I never realized that they can charge you for sending them to your home. I am going to check next time I get a paper statement. Also I know the feeling where you get to an ATM and there is a charge. It is horrible and it really does add up.

  • 12 Annoying Bank Fees and How to Avoid Them   13 years 37 weeks ago

I would suggest joining a credit union and you either won't have to deal with many of these fees, or they will be significantly less pricey when things do happen. A credit union which is part of the Shared Branching network is a great place to put your money because you're able to do your banking from over 4,000 locations nationwide. Just my two cents...

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Exercise Frugally?   13 years 37 weeks ago

Who needs a gym? I have only the most basic equipment: a pull-up bar, a kettlebell, a few resistance bands, gloves and some comfortable clothes & shoes. I bike to work (which I think might be the ultimate frugal fitness tip), and waste money on empty calories (junk food really IS expensive).

  • 7 Secrets to Refinancing an Underwater Mortgage   13 years 37 weeks ago

Unfortunately even with the government programs, I still do not qualify for a refi since my loan is not FHA nor backed by Fannie or Freddie. That doesn't mean I don't try. I've called at least 10 mortgage brokers hoping one will help me, but unfortunately non have.

I am going to keep trying, since housing prices have stabilized/are rising in my area and I am hoping lenders will become a little less strict on their guidelines. I'm not worried either since the Fed has said they plan on keeping rates low through 2014, so I still have another year of trying!

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Exercise Frugally?   13 years 37 weeks ago

I excercise daily every morning by using my bicycle for 5 miles in a bike trail around a lake near a farm or jog 3 miles. After jogging and being all heated up I begin doing sit ups and push ups as much as I can. I sometimes do weight lifting but recently have focused on working on middle abs to get a six pack

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Exercise Frugally?   13 years 37 weeks ago

I use different DVD's, walk and run. In the winter I turn the heat down some and will get up and do some lunges to warm me up if needed.

I walk to and from work. It's healthy, saves me money, and helps the environment.

  • Getting the Most Out of Daily Deal Sites   13 years 37 weeks ago

Buying from daily deal sites can help shoppers save big bucks, and they can also make great gifts. To get the most when I buy daily deals, I click through to also earn cash back. For example, BeFrugal has up to 10% cash back for Living Social right now.

  • Getting the Most Out of Daily Deal Sites   13 years 37 weeks ago

Use Your Deals is an awesome point - my girlfriend has signed up for a bunch of these deals but then either lost interest in 'learning to bellydance' or whatever else she's signed up for that she doesn't bother in the end. Also, be wary if the site has sold hundreds or thousands of deals and they're only a small company then you could end up waiting months or longer before they are available to provide you with the service you bought!

  • 7 Secrets to Refinancing an Underwater Mortgage   13 years 37 weeks ago

I have looked into these programs but the high up front payment required by the goverment to qualify combined with the monthly PMI erodes any savings a lower rate would garner. Atleast this is the scenario I've run into. While a lower rate might sound great and appealing, you refinance to save money, not just for a lower rate.

  • Getting the Most Out of Daily Deal Sites   13 years 37 weeks ago

Great advice. Being a college student I'm always looking for ways to save money, and my friends and I check out daily discount websites frequently. We've learned from experience that it's very easy to act out of impulse when searching on these sites, so I completely agree that it's important to wait for deals that you're sure you'll be able to use.

  • Even More Black Friday Savings Tips From Shopping Experts   13 years 37 weeks ago

REALLY glad I read this article before the holidays roll around! There's a lot of great advice in here; my personal favorite would have to be the concept of online shopping on Black Friday, AFTER visiting the store. I've always felt that the biggest downfall of online shopping is not being able to get a good look at the product, so it's nice to be reminded that you can check them out in the store first.
