I walk 3.5 miles to work each day. I also save gas money as well as parking fees.

I go to my local high school's track. You can do stadiums and speed work and other exercises like lunges for free

Another way to do the rolls is if you make them from scratch, prepare them through the final shaping, cover them in plastic wrap then place them in the fridge the night before - they will finish rising in the fridge. Bring them out and allow to come to room temperature then remove the plastic wrap before baking - no worries about them drying out.

I do a whipped butternut squash with ginger and orange dish in place of potatoes and it can be done up to two days ahead. Start a new tradition so you can substitute a dish to cut down on day of prep time!

You actually can do whipped cream in advance if you add a little dry milk powder to stabilize the cream - but I fortunately have a nifty little cream whipper that does a cup of cream in 30 seconds. It's only single-purpose appliance I own, and I won't give it up!

Thanks for the tip on the bread crumbs under the pie crust - I've not heard of that before.

  • What to Eat Every Day: A Month of Frugal Meals   13 years 38 weeks ago

This is perfect! I find it so hard to create a meal plan and I spend way to much on food because I go about things unplanned. Not only is this list a money saver, but it looks really healthy too. I'm going to use this list to help create my own and hopefully it is something I can stick with.

I belonged to the Y for years - the monthly fee got to be too much, then did Jazzercise - again a monthly fee. Then, my sister-in-law gave me one of Jillian Michael's workout DVD "30 Day Shred" and a set of small weights for my birthday (at my request). The workout DVD has 3 levels, so when I get bored I switch to a different workout. Also, since it was a gift, I feel more obligated to "use" the gift and stick to do the workouts regularly.

I got rid of my car. You can't help but exercise when you don't have an internal combustion engine to get you around.

I walk outside--rain or shine. I also ride my bike. I practice yoga at the park district instead of an expensive yoga studio, and in the winter, I ice skate at free outdoor rinks. My fiance and I do strength training exercises at home, which do not require any equipment except an exercise mat. I'm so happy I don't have a gym membership anymore!

    I run with my dog!

I walk in the mall before work. They open early for walkers. It's safe and climate controlled. I can window shop and not spend money.

I search for free exercise videos on YouTube, using GoogleTV, and then do the workouts within the privacy of my own living room. It's too cold outside to exercise!

I walk my two Jack Russell Terriers outdoors. Totally necessary and totally free!

If I'm exercising at home, I run in my basement. 30 minutes of running around the staircase in my basement is boring, but losing the 40 pounds I did was worth it!! We also have an indoor walking/running track at our local community college that we use in the 6 months of cold weather we have here. In the "warm" weather, we have walking and biking trails all over our city and we use them frequently!

  • Life Insurance: What to Consider Before Replacing a Policy   13 years 38 weeks ago

Thanks for the mention of surrender value -- looking at the entire picture is def. what you should do with cash-value/investment-value type policies.

The YWCA is always a frugal option - good hours and plenty of locations.

  • Life Insurance: What to Consider Before Replacing a Policy   13 years 38 weeks ago

Thanks for the tips! Yes, you should definitely make sure that you are covered under the new policy before canceling the old policy. In my state, there are regulations about this issue but the rules may vary by state so it is good to make sure you stay insured. You may need to time the cancellation of the old policy with the acceptance of the new policy for underwriting reasons but your agent and/or insurance commissioner should be able to help you with that.

While you are looking at the term (if any), it is a great idea to look at the premium costs, which may vary over the life of the policy.

I have a resistance band for home workouts. I also do a lot of body weight exercises so I'm not constrained to the gym. Especially handy for those busy weeks!

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Exercise Frugally?   13 years 38 weeks ago

I do strength and core training at home, go on daily long walks with the dog, work out/take group exercise classes at my university, and take advantage of free week passes at local gyms.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Exercise Frugally?   13 years 38 weeks ago

I workout through exercises that do not require equipment such as push-ups, sit-ups, ect.

I exercise at home. I've purchased a couple of workout DVDs in my lifetime, but have since found numerous free workouts online and will no longer pay for fitness. It just seems silly when there are so many free options available.

I used to belong to a gym, and while it was extremely helpful in getting me to reach my weight loss goals, the financial outlay just wasn't sustainable over the long term. I've taken my new-found love of running outside, and it's been great. I've gotten to know my neighborhood better, and I get some sun and fresh air too!

  • How Rewards Cards Make Money   13 years 38 weeks ago

We use a few different rewards cards to get cash back, but track our spending religiously using mint.com (we sign in at least 3 times per week to see where we're at against our monthly budget). With Mint, it doesn't matter whether we use cash, debit, or credit, as it is all counted against the budget the same, and there's never sticker shock when the bill comes.

And it makes a lot more sense for us than using cash or debit for our normal expenses - our credit card gives us 6% back on groceries (about $300 per year for our family, just on groceries) and 3% on gas. We also have all our bills paid via cc, and earn back over $1000 per year in cash back, for purchasing only what is in our normal budget.

  • Make-Ahead Thanksgiving Dishes   13 years 38 weeks ago

My kitchen is small so planning ahead is crucial. I make many of the dishes you mentioned ahead of time with one addition...the night before the big day, I load a monster sized turkey into a large lidded roaster pan. I set the temperature at 200-225 degrees and go to bed. By morning it's golden brown and unspeakably moist. Kept covered it easily stays hot until noon and frees my oven for pumpkin pies and other desserts.

  • 6 Dumb Things Employment Recruiters See People Do   13 years 38 weeks ago

To spell check my resume, I first read it backwards. This stops me from glancing at words because I know what I wrote and allows me to focus on each word individually. I then read it out loud. Many times what sounds good on paper isn't really good English.

I always hated crafting my resume and cover letter for each job I was applying to but did it for the most part. When I did, I would hear back from the company - not always but a good amount. On the ones where I just blindly submitted, I never heard back.
