You are correct. Reading can help you acquire skills without having to spend so much money. To quote Kiyosaki (I think): The learner (or reader, in this case) inherits the earth while the learned are beautifully equipped to cope with a world that NO longer exists.
With the rapid changes we see in many sectors, even those who have gone through college have to keep reading to stay on the cutting edge -- The internet has made information so easily accessible. All you have to do now is make out time and read -- By the way, I am writing this from a remote part of Africa and I can soak in as much information as I need as long as I have an internet connection.
Yes, you can advance your knowledge without paying for college.
IF at all possible, avoid working for Comcast. They got me reeled in after speaking to an area supervisor. So I got online and did a little research. Ok - so I qualify to apply and test for a Comm Tech 3 position. Can I do that? After asking I was assured I would be considered for that particular position. Next thing I know, Carco, the third-party background checking people hired by Comcast are calling and emailing me to do their work for them which should have been Red Flag No.1. Next thing I know I'm in training. First week went great. Learning about Comcast, taking easy tests, making a little money. Second week, Ladder Handling and Pole Climbing certtifcations. What? You heard it right! They give new trainees THREE DAYS to learn everything they will need to know about safely climbing utility poles and ladders leaning on strands in three days (omg). Wait, I was supposed to be a Comm Tech 3 - remember? Oh, who told you that? You will be climbing poles, getting screamed at by disgruntled customers, bitten by owner's dogs, crawling under houses with feces and urine present. Dangerous and posionous snakes, spiders and vermin of mixed variety. All that along with the fact that if you screw-up while climbing-up or coming down you could die. No thanks! Save your crap for the next guy. It's definately NOT WORTH the MONEY !!!
Thanks for the nice article. Actually while reading this, I remember a college drops out but a very successful billionaire; he acquired a lot of knowledge by reading many books. I believe you know Bill Gates; he is voracious reading and he read a lot of books related to computer programming and software engineering. The wisdom and acknowledge he got from books helps him to succeed in setting up Microsoft.
Nora, I am curious how you manage to accumulate sufficient miles that add up to being enough for free flights if your total annual cost of living per year as per your blog is only $17,000 a year .. even if you pay for EVERYTHING on your card ( maxxing it out at a total of $17,000 a year) ... something doesnt seem to add up to me? Maybe you do your sums differently to me? Just asking.
Maybe next time you make a comment like that you will provide more information. I saw your comment and thought, "Great, I will check them out."
Turns out you can ONLY use them if you or your parent served in the military. Well mine did, but I didn't want to put that down (didn't know it was necessary information - just thought they were being nosy). Since I didn't do the form right the first time, I can not go back and edit it after the fact. Now I can't use them without calling in to even try.
There was no info on their site that said this, except when you get to the end, if you didn't acknowledge the relationship, then you simply can not apply for the card.
Waste of 1 hour of my life that would have been better off if you simply said....
"You forgot USAA. They're great as well! Provided you or your parents are veterans and you tell them on the application."
I made this bread for my family last night!! I used your GF flour mix as well using the sorghum option instead of soy. It came out so poofy, light, and traditional tasting. I offered everyone a taste and half the loaf was gone in minutes.
This morning I was slicing some up to use as toast with breakfast. My three year old son (our inspiration for going GF/DF) came up and wanted to snitch a piece of bread. It felt so good to be able to tell him YES!! Go ahead honey, I made this for you. He lit up and scampered away munching happily.
I am making several more loaves today so that I may slice them and store in the freezer.
Happy mama = Happy home, is correct when it comes to the health of my children.
Thank you :D
I am a promotional model part-time. I will represent brands like Axe, L'Oreal, Maybelline, Kraft, and Degree. I also merchandise, which is setting up and tearing down store displays. Last week I was paid $25/hr to tear down a purse display at Sam's Club. If these companies cannot find an independent contractor for the usual $8-10/hr rate, they get desperate and will pay much more.
I'm not an NFL fan, but if there's something similar for the NBA I would seriously consider it. A lot of my friends are Lakers/Clippers fans, and I know tickets to these games would make great gifts. But I just can't afford these tickets once they hit the secondary market.
Same thing just happened to me with Macy's. Went to use a gift card that was a wedding gift, and it had a zero balance. The fraud department is extremely unhelpful. After faxing a letter and the information they requested, they said they couldn't do anything without a proof of purchase. Why would I have a proof of purchase if it was a gift? They need to put the customer first.
Wow, and to think there are those who think a "cashless" society is the way to go. I just left Macy's a couple of hours ago. While there, I attempted to use a gift card that I had received for Christmas 2011. The initial amount was for $100 and as of today, I still had $86 left on the card (or so I thought). When I attempted to make my $18 purchase, I was told the card had a 0 balance. I immeditely went to their office to seek an explanation. After several checks on their computer, I was told that my card number was used along with several other cards on a transaction for a Michael Kors watch at one of their stores in CA. I live in KY and have never even been to CA. The lady that was helping me made what I thought was an interesting comment. She said that whenever they see "CA" show up, they can pretty much tell that it is fraudaulent activity. That led me to believe that they are well aware of this being a problem. Fortunately, my situaiton was resolved rather quickly. They gave me 4 $25 Macy certificates. As others have mentioned, my card was purchased directly from our local Macy's store which would lead one to believe that the fraud happening with these cards is an internal problem. When I got home and went online to try to research this issue, I was surprised to see blogs and comments that go back several years. That's ridiculous; Macy's really need to address this problem.
Convenience definitely leads to more spending! When I lived in Barcelona for a semester there was a 24 hour convenience store right down stairs from us and my roommates and I would go there almost every single night. Better off having things out of reach and saving money!

Every so often I will go through my clothes, books, accessories, etc and sell them online on Ebay to make some extra cash

Housesitting & petsitting.

What a great round-up of single serving desserts! Thanks so much for including my ice cream!
Surrender value is one more thing( particularly in case of traditional policy) before you replace your life insurance policy.

Yes, the fun factor is what is really inspiring me to live car free, at least for awhile. Most days, my bike rides are a highlight.
Dana, can any of your local bike stores order and install an Xtracycle kit on your current bike? That can be done for well under $1,000.
Right now I don't do much except Swagbucks. I have babysat on occasion, but nothing regularly.

The most-often used frugal method of my Dad? He would say "I'm broke" EVERYTIME we kids ever asked for anything at the checkout counter at the store.

Great point about working from home. It's funny how other people often take better care of us than we do of ourselves ...
