Thanks for sharing this info. Disregarding traffic tickets can be negatively affect your credit score - and not a lot of people know this.
I would suggest that if you are planning to buy a television set or refrigerator, do on installment rather than paying cash. It is another opportunity to show you can make payments when they are due.
Nora, Within the last several days I've discovered you and have been reading through your blog posts like my new favorite novel. You seem to be writing the instructions to my life. I am so thankful to have found you!!
Great article for revealing the secrets of the loan sharks! It's a fine line between saving money on credit cards and getting yourself into unneeded debt. Debt is slavery, and the loan sharks have many tricks up their sleeves. The only proper way to use credit cards is to pay off the balance in full as soon as possible.
I've thought about using a meal planner b/c as you mention it saves time and can save money. And planning meals at first is great but after a couple of decades, it gets tiresome.
But the meals I've seen (they showed mean examples) didn't appeal to me so I have opted not to try them. Still, it's something I may try in the future and like the idea of buying just 20 items and keeping 20 items in the pantry.
I have 3 magazine subs, but I don't pay for them - I get them through Recyclebank rewards. The only paid subscription I have is for my local paper - but only 2 days a week, including Sunday. And the price was $20 for a year, which, with the coupons I get each week in the Sunday paper, pays for itself.
I pay for Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, and Men's Health, but only because I read Men's Health cover to cover. Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus replace cable for me.
Thanks for your comment. Hope I've helped folks to see a basic concept in terms of future value, and provided them with a useful tool and starting point for evaluations.
As I mentioned in the article, you have to make assumptions about the interest rates, plus you'll experience varying rates of interest and investment returns over time, and consistency is difficult to come by. Having been invested for 25+ years, I know that returns vary each year. But hopefully, seeing the difference in Future Value between say 1% and 8% might help folks make a decision about different possibilities for investing.
We subscribe to the local paper (Sundays and Tuesdays only for ads & coupons), Netflix and Hulu Plus. My husband bought me a gift subscription to Birchbox last year, so I get a monthly box of beauty samples that I LOVE. I also subscribe to a monthly fiction email from writer Caitlin Kiernan.
None! All of my mags are free (received as holiday gifts, paid for with Coke Rewards points, or just took advantage of free subscriptions I found online), don't have cable anymore, don't get the newspaper since I read the news online...oh, I do pay for internet. That's it.
Good stuff, but this is useful mainly for those who understand the relevant math AND the financial modeling (assumptions, parameters). The challenge many people face is that they're trying to make good decisions without those tools, and saying to them "go learn compound interest and basic finance" isn't very useful.
There's another problem: doing projections using flat rates is quite do-able with spreadsheets. And it's a very useful exercise. But the world doesn't follow the neat rules and patterns you have in your projections, it's nastily random. What if you want to model a set of real world (random) scenarios, to get more realistic projections? Now you either need a more sophisticated tool (there are very few out there), or you need to be a proficient programmer, with access to a lot of historical data.
netflix, harpers, atlantic, the wa post, the wall street journal, various magazines that we use only because our frequent flier miles would expire unless we used them so we bought a magazine subscription as it was cheapest.
Thinking and planning ahead of time really is the key to getting the best prices (and avoiding stress) on Christmas gifts. So far I've bought almost every one of my family members gifts online, got good deals, and don't have to worry about running around the days before Christmas or braving the zoo of a mall. I like your idea of preparing meals beforehand, I'll have to pass that along to my mom.
Not only does getting off the beaten path allow for a more authentic and rich experience, but it will also ensure you save money on the touristy spots and restaurants that majorly jack up prices. I love the idea of staying with a local family, or even in an apartment that rents out to travelers- this was you can buy local market food and cook meals yourself. Talking to locals and asking around for hidden spots is much better than visiting the concierge at a hotel. Great tips!
I'm a mag-hag so I have a lot of magazine subscriptions Essence, Ebony, Jet, O Magazine Heart & Soul, Latina, and All You. The high value coupons make the subscription so worth it!
We subscribe to Netflix, high-speed internet, my husband gets cooking magazines and other magazines that he got for a really good price. We also get Reader's Digest, which I got for an annual subscription for $10.

ha -- I meant "menu" examples, not mean examples.
