Good point. Sometimes when you're trying hard to figure out a problem, you're only thinking along certain lines. When you decide to break down barriers and "think outside the box", you can often come up with an even better idea as a solution that simply thinking logically.
These are all good ideas, and so is the one left in the comment below. Any way to continue using any sort of skills whether they be pertaining to your work, or simply working in a team, as a leader, sharpening writing and speaking skills, are all better than doing nothing. Having working experience in any area during unemployment (even if it means not getting paid for your work) is a way to not fall out of the groove.
I personally don't like giving gift cards, but I sometimes do when push comes to shove. Usually I try to get my bf something practical that he wouldn't spend the money on for himself. In the past I have built him a new bicycle, got him a GPS - he travels all over the U.S. for work, and scoured the Twin Cities to find his favorite Thai dish.

I mean, I agree with all the things that you've indicated as negatives about having a smartphone - hell, if I had a Facebook account i'd probably go insane within an hour of the incessant updates (my wife has her FB alerts set to vibrate, but I can STILL hear that 80% of the time when it goes off).
But I was just thinking this morning of how nice it is to be able to look up anything at all on the fly. Sometimes I wonder about things; having my phone allows me to find out the answers without having a chance to forget what I was wondering about - this morning I was walking the dog and looked up the lyrics to a song that was stuck in my head, for instance. Having a smartphone also means I don't need a watch, a portable GPS unit, or an iPod.
Yes, basic phones are cheaper. Also, as the previous commenter mentioned, you can get cheaper service. (We tried the cheap guys before, didn't work out so well for us coverage-wise.)
You can, though, live a peaceful Flipper-style life with a Droid in your pocket; you just have to turn off, or never turn on, all the distracting crap. I get notices for text messages, email messages for just my main folder (so I don't get mailing list subscriptions alerted or anything like that), and a little bird chirp if somebody Tweets directly to me; a grand total of maybe a half dozen blips a day unless I'm in a text conversation with someone. I don't even have games on my phone... might still have one, come to think of it, but I haven't played it in months.

LOL. It's obviously not the first plan of action for new releases, but it is sometimes the ONLY option for hundreds of titles that I would consider essential classics. They can be a great way to round out a collection :)
That's the challenge, isn't it? I've seen them at thrift stores for pretty cheap. And then there are the online outlets that still sell them. Good luck!
Two of the best gifts that I have given my husband (who is very hard to please!) have been the following:
#1 - He has a show truck and I know what part he wanted to get next so I got with his Uncle who is also into trucks, etc. and got the part ordered and painted. He was so excited to have it and it still is on his truck to this day. I did this for him because it was something that he wanted and just never seemed to find the time to get to.
#2 - The second thing is that when my husband had his car he had gotten free Sirius Radio for 3 months and although I knew that he liked it I also knew he would never pay for it because it warred with his frugality side. I found a deal for 1/2 off for the year and so I got him a year subscription for Christmas that year and again he loved it.
The other thing I did for all of the men in the family started out funny but then they ended up loving it and getting it for themselves was Monkey Butt powder! This stuff really works and I had ordered a bunch for every man in our family, brothers, brothers in law, husband, father in law. I am a big practical joker, but I am also practical so it sufficed for both. Needless to say that year lots of jokes were passed around and lots of balls were powdered.
Looking for the best gift for a guy you know, father, brother, or maybe your man. Well look no further than the man who you are shopping for. All you need to do is a little detective work. What is he into? Is he an avid cyclist then buy him that upgrade for his bike and make it one that he has been wanting. Does your man love video games and play MMO's? Then buy him some in game gold, items or a bonus. How about if he likes hunting maybe you can find him a new scope for his riffle. Remember it is the thought that counts and when you are buying a gift in an area he loves you are sure to win big as long as you put a little thought into it and go the extra mile.

Shop around and you can go as low as $10 a year if you have wifi nearby.
I personally pay $12 a month for my smartphone (Droid X) on Page Plus Cellular.
