I wasn't a dog lover until a beautiful stray lab mix found me and my boys right after my husband left us. He helped us through a very tough time. Fast forward 20 years and my latest rescue, a golden border collie mix is helping me through the pain of the sudden death of my 2nd husband. There is no way I would ever want to live without the love, joy and comfort of having a dog in my life. They are definitely worth the cost. You can't even put a price on that kind of companionship.

  • How to Stop Chronic Procrastination   14 years 24 weeks ago

I struggle with procrastination. Lists help me because I love to cross stuff off of them. I have gotten better as I've found ways to overcome this issue. Mostly, I just try to start somewhere like you said. I'm always reminding myself that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.. :) Starting is the hardest part.

Pets are absolutely worth the cost. They add more to the quality of my life than the expense of keeping them. And they are much cheaper than children! ;-p It has even been shown that they can be good for human health. I cut back, by not cutting back on the quality of their food, flea treatments etc. As with humans preventing health problems is cheaper than medical care and improves their and your quality of life. That being said, I wouldn't have more pets than I can afford to take care of well.

  • 8 Truths From a Mystery Shopper You Must Read Before You Get Started   14 years 24 weeks ago

Oh, I know, get this. BestMark berated me for turning in my first shop report in caps. The guy completely talked down to me, whined that he had to retype "the entire report," threatened to deduct my pay next time, etc. I explained that I was new to mystery shopping, that I also shop for Ritter and their system auto-generates all my reports INTO CAPS so I thought that typing in caps was some sort of an industry standard. I told him not to scold me like a child, that I was a 42-year-old woman with a college degree and that I would not continue to bust my butt to answer 65-question surveys for a measley $10 only to be treated like that. The whiny ahole. BestMark has 1 strike in my "2 Strikes Allowed" book. We don't get paid nearly enough to be treated like that. They should be THANKING us.

  • How to Stop Chronic Procrastination   14 years 24 weeks ago

I'm not a huge procrastinator, but I do have a hard time making decisions when presented with a lot of options. I think a lot of the same principles apply -- especially "just start somewhere."

I used Borax to help keep the number of pests down for the three weeks I was living in the apartment I now only call "the roach palace." And I love that cornstarch suggestion -- I had never heard of that before. As someone particularly spill-prone, I'm definitely going to keep that in my back pocket.

  • 6 Ways to Get More Done on Airplanes   14 years 24 weeks ago

I tend to do more of my work in the airport than on the plane -- I always feel like my seatmates will read everything I'm writing. Airports with free Wi-Fi and outlets are too rare still, but so great. I never mind being delayed in Manchester, NH or Charlotte, NC because I know I can get plenty of work done.

  • How to Watch Movies in the Theater for Free   14 years 24 weeks ago

I live in Colorado, and the Westword always has ads for prescreened movies for free. It's a great way to get the up and up on new flicks, as well as a frugal way to enjoy time with friends or on a date. Great post!

I'm working for BestMark now, too. It's okay, I guess, just sorta "so so" work. I find it weird that they never sign their emails with their names, only "BestMark." And all they ever have in my area are tanning salons (all are the same company, just different locations) and a few automotive "oil and tire" shops, and one Best Buy. The tanning surveys take me two hours to complete...for only 10 dollars. That's pretty silly. Three hours of work for only ten bucks and a free tan. And they are BOMBARDING me with shop offers, which would normally be great, but there is only so many times you can walk into a tanning salon and claim it's your first time without them wondering why you are already so tan! Also, the tanning salon employees rotate to the different locations, so I am going to be busted by someone who recognizes me from another salon soon. Already, because of the measely pay, I am getting a bit bored and disinterested. Gas is too expensive now to drive 20 miles to do a tanning shop only to get $10 in return. :(

Wow I love butter but I don't think i will be putting it in my hair anytime soon! :) some of the ideas listed are good ones, I might in fact use it to cut some of the candy I make (well put it on the knife to aid in cutting it! Thanks for the list!

  • How to Travel Full-Time for $17,000 a Year (or Less!)   14 years 24 weeks ago

If you consider the cost of rent/mortgage, the cost of food and utilities, and the add-on's of internet and cable, most people in North America do live on far more than $17000 per year.

You didn't list SCORE (Service Corps Of Retired Executives), which has both in-person mentors and online mentors available. Visit www.score.org. Some locations are better staffed than others but if you're not happy with the locals, you can always get a "email" mentor. My online mentor has been a godsend, and she's free!

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 24 weeks ago

Thanks for this very entertaining post. I'm a farmer and I live in a region of Northrn Idaho known as the Palouse, which has some of the most fertile farmland in the country. As a result, it's very easy here to buy barley and wheat by the truckload. Do you recommend that barley for moonshine be malted, like it is for beer, or can it be fermented as is? Can it also be made from wheat?

  • 8 Other Green Cleaners Already in Your House   14 years 24 weeks ago

    Hi Christie,
I haven't forgotten baking soda! There are lots of other articles on Wisebread about baking soda, and the point of this article was to give credit to the OTHER green cleaners, the lesser-known ones, other than baking soda and vinegar.

I save because that is what I was taught. My grandmother grew up during the depression, and I spent a lot of time with her. She always taught me to prepare for emergencies and be thankful for what you have. I still live by those rules...

  • 5 Reasons Not to Apply for a Loan Modification in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP)   14 years 24 weeks ago

I made application to Bank of America in April 2011. After extensive conversations with several B of A people in their HAMP program, I was assured I met the qualifications to modify our two B of A mortgages, and made formal application. In May, June & July I had to repeatedly resubmit "lost" documents and submit "additional" information not initially requested. In late July I was told I did not qualify because "rental property" doesn't qualify. (Note: our modest lake home has NEVER been rented to anyone). An argument ensued with this B of A individual who became hostel and obnoxious. He flat refused to let me talk to a supervisor, saying his say was "final". At the end of the 20 minute conversation he said "well, it doesn't matter anyway, because you're current on your mortgage, so you don't qualify anyway"! I asked him for an explanation of this where upon he said "I'm not going to argue with you" and hung up on me. A subsequent call to another B of A person took place. He said I was qualified, and asked me to resubmit a couple of utility bills. I immediately did.

Then - silence! Several phone calls produced no help, nobody knew what the status was. Registered letters in August and October went unanswered. Finally in January 2012 we decided to withhold a payment to get their attention. It did. I was assigned a "focal point" person to try to help. She had no records of any contact following the conversation of July 2011. She went over our application and said we did not qualify. She apologized for the "confusion" of the past 9 months. She has offered to try to help us, asking for the re submission of all our information previously given, but is unable or unwilling to tell me what program or help might be available.

Bank of America does not operate in good faith. B of A is back to making big profits after their bailouts, but there's no incentive for them to help trouble homeowners caught up in this housing fiasco - so they don't. They deliberately make the customer jump through hoops over and over again, stalling until they simply give up. They appear to be corrupt. No documented request for help should take months bordering on a year! Ridiculous! What a complete waste of time and energy!
