I've seen some really cute wine cork jewelry on Etsy too! Another idea for your wine corks! I've also seen some great art pieces designed from wine corks, even a 6 foot tall vase made completely of wine corks.

The movie usually has to be extra special for us to go see it in the theater. Most movies we wait until they come out on dvd and then get them out of Redbox.

  • 16 Ways to Make Your Clothes Last Longer Without Spending Big   14 years 21 weeks ago

Thanks for the great article, I've sent it to my grown kids to have someone besides their mother and father saying it. I agree with all but double wearing shirts... Thats a good way to wear them out with the natural oil around the neck and collar and many of the stain treatments aren't good to leave on fabric for extended periods (it's amazing what just a bit does over time). Its better to have two weeks' worth of shirts so that they don't have to be laundered every week.  If they are all the same color all the better.  Lastly, treat collars of all collared shirts as soon as they are taken off (which should be as soon as you get off of work, because thats when you shower and change into casual clothing.  This will help extend the life of clothing as well.

I usually see the movie in the theater. Otherwise I will forget that I want to see it, and and never see the movie.

    Tara,

You're absolutely correct. If you call in to ask for a lower rate, you don't want to disclose any financial information. At the first sign of financial difficulty, the banks will red flag your account and might lower your credit limit. They will see you as a high risk account.

What motivates me to save is constantly thinking ahead 30 years and wanting to have a comfortable retirement and to have enough saved to leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren. I've seen how the economy has affected my parents and their friends, particularly with unforeseen expenses and medical costs, so I think about that every time I think of making an unnecessary purchase or consider foregoing putting extra money into my IRA or savings account!

Tweeting the agencies is such a great tip. Most people don't realize that federal agencies are getting into social media as well.

  • What if the Mortgage Interest Deduction Went Away?   14 years 21 weeks ago

You don't get the deduction for the life of the mortgage. At some point the principle exceeds the interest.

  • What if the Mortgage Interest Deduction Went Away?   14 years 21 weeks ago

So you would rather pay the bank interest to keep from sending the gov't $800?

  • What if the Mortgage Interest Deduction Went Away?   14 years 21 weeks ago

You don't buy a house for the tax deduction. With the historic low rates, most people won't even have enough interest to itemize. YOu can give away the same amount to charity you are giving to the bank in interest and get the same deduction.

  • Your 31 Hidden Networks That Can Help You Land Jobs   14 years 21 weeks ago

This is a great list! One of the many hats I wear is my "Certified Federal Job Search Counselor" hat - and I train military spouses and personnel how to search for federal jobs and write resumes. One of the tricks I learned on the side is to find the agencies Twitter handle and tweet them directly with an About.me link page - especially if it is an agency that is going through a lot of upgrading - mostly all of them right now. They want fresh bodies in government with fresh ideas and social media is an amazing way to get noticed -

    # 30 I have had more luck getting job leads from distant relatives than close ones - likewise my younger relatives that I did not grow up with are the ones that come to me for career hunting advice over my own flesh and blood brother - goes to show you that you can't be a prophet in your own household! LOVE tapping into distant relative info -

#24 and #28 are absolute gold in my opinion! There is no awkward moment of forced small talk, just straight to the point, this is what I do, this is what I want to do, can you help me? And many times forum leaders will post to niche forums about jobs in the field - I do this constantly on a military spouse forum - whenever I see something that is specific to milspouses OR to blogging, I post to the spouse forum and encourage everyone to apply. Social media is awesome.

And while social media rocks, in person meetings are even better, which is why I always try to make as many appearances to professional conferences as possible. I network with people who are attending on twitter and facebook, then when I meet them in person it is like we have always known one another - which is a bit odd - yet endearing at the same time.

ok! off to share this article on Facebook!

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   14 years 21 weeks ago

    Hi Claire,

First, let me say I've been using baking soda to wash my hair and acv (apple cider vinegar) to condition for years!

First, I think your recipe uses way too much baking soda! You'll end up with dry hair, I'm afraid. I keep a plastic cup (er..actually, it's a brown hydrogen peroxide bottle I cut the top off...haha) in the shower. I keep a sugar bowl (with glass lid, and we have a tile floor, go figure) filled with baking soda on the windowsill to use as a face scrub/wash and I literally take a couple pinches from the bowl (probably 2-3 tsp worth), throw it in the cup, and then fill the cup almost full with warm shower water. I stir it up with my fingers, wet my hair, then pour on the baking soda solution. It's great for daily use, removing chlorine from swimming pools, and getting out hair products or gunk (I make my own milk-plastic hair glue). I massage it in, then I rinse. I follow with acv--about 1/4 cup in the same brown cup, fill with water, rinse. The vinegar itself closes the hair cuticle so therefore acts as a conditioner. Wonderful and cheap!

I caution your readers about your high ratio of baking soda to water mixture b/c on the occasions I did use more baking soda (2 T worth ) for a more "scrubby" experience, it actually dried my hair out terribly (like straw) and actually lightened it a little (undesirable, as i like my dark dark brown hair on most days). Too much baking soda will absolutely strip your hair of oils and dry it. I'd suggest your readers might try making it fresh, per use.

Finally, when I want extra conditioning, I rub a few drops of evoo (extra virgin olive oil) on my hands and then run my hands/fingers through my hair. Lovely. I also use the evoo as a face wash and a moisturizer before bed. The same baking soda and acv doubles as a face wash (pinch the soda into your palm, sprinkle on water, wash face) and an anti-aging toner (wet flannel or cotton ball with acv, and, closing your eyes, rub it all over your face. ACV contains natural AHA ((alpha-hydroxy acid)), which is a number-one ingredient in expensive face creams. Allow it to sit about 10 seconds, avoiding your eyes, and rinse completely..take care as vinegar is very strong and can hurt your eyes). Follow by applying evoo to your still-wet face for a wonderful nighttime cleansing that leaves your face youthful and glowing. Costs pennies, too!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You See Movies in the Theater?   14 years 21 weeks ago

My sister and I see one movie per week in the theatres. Early last year, we purchased a bulk order of movie tickets from the theatre website (so they were cheaper than we'd get at the ticket window). And we made an agreement to go to the movies one weekend day. We switch up who gets to pick the movie and there are no vetoes. :) It's fun to find that you are enjoying a movie that you would not have necessarily picked and it is good bonding/quality time between me and my sister.

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 21 weeks ago

    Guest,
Let's look at it on a scientific basis. You created something equivalent to sugar wine. Would you feel safe drinking that, yes. Now you are using heat to pull just the alcohol off the mash. You have not changed any chemical or added anything. All you have done is concentrate just the alcohol. If you drank a gallon of the wash, you would be safe but hung over. If you drink half a liter of the alcohol, you are still drinking the same thing with less water.

Methanol would be from, say, wood fermented. That makes methanol. You would not drink the wash or the alcohol it makes. That would blind you. When you use plant material, you get a little methanol from the pectin, I believe it was. There is a lot of sugar and very little pectin in fruit. The amount of methanol is so small, it would not effect you.

Since methanol comes off first, from lower temps, you see it when you start. If you had 500 gallons of wine and started to distill it, you would get a large amount of methanol in the beginning. You could take just the beginning product, heads, and kill yourself. Now, if you mixed it with all the rest of the alcohol you make from the 500 gallons, it would be so diluted, you would be fine. You would die from alcohol poisoning before methanol poisoning.

With that said, if you use pure malted corn or fruits, you would discard the first little bit. Depending on what you made it from and how much you are making would dictate that amount. If you are using sugar, just drink it up. The smell and taste will tell you if you should get rid of it.

The only thing about the internet is that it has SOOOO much information - it allows you to be productive if only you know which tools to use and are disciplined enough not to waste your time with games, random browsing, etc. I like the fact that I can pay my bills online, it saves so much time of useless walks to the banks and standing in line, etc.

We go see movies in the theater about once or twice a year. It has become too expensive to go more often than that.

This is a great article. Some very useful tips. I especially like the accountability partner. At CreditSense we've found that type of open accountability is one of the truly mind changing and freeing experiences our clients can have. It's like standing up and publicly admitting for the first time that you have a debt problem.
