My fiance and I just went to the movie theater last night to see The Vow. We usually watch movies at home on Netflix, but last night was a special night and we decided to go out and see something in the theater. Tickets were only $7/person last night when it's usually $12 where I live. I would say we watch movies in theaters less than 6 times a year - only if there's something good to see.
With DH in cancer treatment, going out to the movies is a rarity. When he's up to it, I use free passes I get from Coke rewards. $30 for tickets for 2 is just not something I can stomach too often!
I'd much rather watch a movie at home than in a theater. I can multitask while watching a movie at home, save money, and avoid annoying people and screaming children.
I have always had am internal drive to save money. Growingg up my parents and siblings always came to me to borrow money. But most recently my daughter and retirement are adding to the drive.
One of my saving goals this year is to have a real family vacation. Money is a security blanket but it is also meant to be enjoyed. I grew up in a household that struggled with money so I work hard reminding myself that money is also meant to be spent and to add value by creating experiences and memories. This year I hope to take the kids to Washington DC.
Every once in awhile my husband and I hit the theater or in the summers we hit the drive through. More often though we wait until a movie comes out on DVD and rent it. That way we can enjoy it as a family without having to take out a second mortgage(there are six us us.)
Orchids are a great idea. My local Trader Joe's sometimes have beautiful orchids for sale at $9.99. They look very elegant and lasts much longer than cut flowers. Happy Valentine's Day!
School contacts #2 and #5 - yes! I'm friends with former teachers and professors on Facebook, and they have great connections with others in a variety of fields. And getting to know parents your child's classmates opens up a whole other network.
You might be in luck. You're talking about a man who, after joking that he was bringing me his leftover bacon from breakfast the day he was flying out of Missouri, handed me a bacon-filled napkin when he showed up back in Los Angeles.
One network I've found more useful than I would have ever expected is people who do the same work that I do. It was especially helpful when I was freelancing full-time. Sometimes people get offers for work, but they're too busy, just accepted another position, etc. In that case, they'll recommend someone else they know who does similar work. I try to do the same thing now. I used to do a lot of writing about Philadelphia, and now that I'm not living there, I pass on job leads to friends who are.
I have never thought to use my insurance agent or accountant to find a job! I've always thought to just stick with the traditional networks (i.e. classmates, work contacts, family, and friends). These are some seriously awesome tips on out of the box people to reach out too! I'll be sure to keep them in mind if I am ever job hunting in the future!
I've definitely experienced the distraction thing before when I've had bad internet connections. I'll be waiting for an article to load, think "Okay, I'll read something else while I wait!" and get totally caught up.
I completely agree with the efficiency and happiness section. I can't tell you how much my productivity goes down (and how much my blood pressure goes up) when I have to wait for something to load! I am a much happier camper when things move along quickly.
No offense but sites like WiseBread is the worst kind of distraction online. Hold on hold on let me explain. Sites like WiseBread, Lifehacker, and various DIY or How-To sites are not blocked at work like Facebook or Twitter. And you don't feel too guilty surfing these sites because technically you're learning something. So you end up reading and reading and then half of the day is gone.

No movies at the theater for me. It's just too expensive. I can wait until I can get them at the library for free.
I only go to the theater for certain movies that I think will be better on the big screen. That and the occasional trip with the grandkids.
Those are gorgeous pictures Andrea.

"I have my own beautiful free beach-front villa and use of two cars."
Wow I am incredibly jealous. Thank you for sharing your secrets. =)
Nice. Let me know if he has sisters.

I'll take extra minutes any day, and anything technology can do to help me save time and frustration is worth it. 4 days a year is a mini-vacation!

The worst thing about graduating from college was giving up that sweet sweet T3 connection.

The BIG key with Amazon is that they are NOT losing money on Prime at all.
Use two different computers; on of which you haven't logged on as as you. .e., no cookies.
COMPARE THE PRICES!!! Prime members are charged more typically.

Tell your current boyfriend that if he starts sending me bacon or bacon-related products he will be my favorite of all your boyfriends.
only if it's a movie that deserves to be on the big screen: action, thriller, big explosions. Inception
No movie theater for us. I can't remember the last one I saw in a theater, I think it was Mrs. Doubtfire. It has been a long long time ago.
