  • Being Happier Through...Botox?   16 years 10 weeks ago

It's funny, I've noticed that I can keep the rest of my skin fairly smooth and plump through some good products and moisturizers, but the line between my brows is so deeply entrenched that it seems like the solution is more than skin deep.

However, I can totally see why anyone would avoid Botox. It just seems so gross, pumping your skin full of toxins. If it wasn't for the benefits that I saw in mood, I would totally never do it.

Strangely enough, and I didn't mention this in the article because it seemed kind of doofy, I only noticed how bad the frowning was when I was at an Indian wedding. I was all decked out in my sari, and I had bought this really cool bindi for my forehead (it was tall and beweled and terribly chic). It also keep popping off of my face every time I would frown, which was, like, every 2.5 seconds.

That's when I first felt, "Wow, I need to do something about this." :)

  • A One-Step Guide to a Better Job and More Money   16 years 10 weeks ago

It really depends on the structure of the company, what the management is like, and whether they actually want you to stay with the company. Some places really don't care at all about you. If you quit, they'll just hire someone else. I've worked at jobs where you can outperform all you like, you aren't going anywhere. Maybe you'll get a bit more of a bonus, but not enough to make the extra effort worthwhile.

Some companies force you to outperform by increasing your workload and associated stress until you either lose all motivation to do anything other than show up or just outright quit. So the real goal here is to under-perform, if only to preserve your sanity.

  • A One-Step Guide to a Better Job and More Money   16 years 10 weeks ago

@goals: is that really true though? I'd like to hear from managers out there. I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't make something happen to keep the people that outperform. Not necessarily as a reward, but as a means of making their job easier.

If they can keep the employees hitting homeruns, their job is much easier.

I work in corporate America. It is frustrating because we know the max out raise will be each year, 3%. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for anything, especially in the last couple of years.

It seems as if the dynamic of corporate America has changed in the last 10 years. It is an employers market, rather than employees, and they know that.

  • 6 Tips for Saving Big Money on Office Supplies   16 years 10 weeks ago

Just an FYI - studies have shown that these office supply superstores actually charge more than the independent dealers, many times inflating list price so the perception is that they are giving you a better deal. In fact, they need to charge more to pay for all of the big fancy offices, CEO salaries & advertising! Check out your local dealer and become loyal to them and you will reap many more benefits than a few reward points!

  • Being Happier Through...Botox?   16 years 10 weeks ago

Great topic, Andrea.  While I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go for Botox myself, I do notice that I feel and act more positively when my frown line in my forehead is under control.  I've seen pretty good results from using a combination of moisturizers with Retinol and just being super diligent about exfoliating and staying out of the sun.  Of course, I've been doing this since well before I turned 30 (I'm set to turn 32 in a few months), and I'm not sure that anyone who didn't start early enough could see the same results.  (On a side note, I currently can't use anything more than water and soap on my skin without it breaking out -- now that I'm pregnant.  So I'm back to being frowny-frownikins for at least another 4 months.)

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 10 weeks ago

Cut your run with distilled water. Go for something that is NOT flammable. You want a clean mash this time, but not so strong that you are boiling what amounts to gasoline over an open flame. Just cut it to equal half of what you started with, distilled water, which should be ok. It should only be double the original strength.

I have the line between my eyebrows that my father had; it made him look mad, always. I don't want that, and I've been thinking about Botox. Thanks for writing this, as I wasn't sure whether it would work or how much it would cost.

    Hi,

I read The Intelligent Investor and Security Analysis from Ben Graham in 2009 and since then I average a 200% average return.

These 2 books changed my life.

This makes so much sense. I am 30 and also have that line between my brows. It is the only major sign of age on my face. It is from squinting in the sun as well as intense focus on work. People often say, I look "unapproachable" at times and I believe this is why.

I think my furrow is more caused by anxiety than anger... I wonder if keeping the spot in my face that holds the most tension, relaxed, it would help me stay overall, relaxed. I somehow feel that is would.

    Great article, fresh topic, thanks!

  • Being Happier Through...Botox?   16 years 10 weeks ago

Andrea, I really appreciate your writing this article. This is definitely some news I can use. I'm also a frowner. I'm glad I don't have crow's feet and laugh lines. People do think I am younger than I am. But I do have that little furrow between the eyebrows that you mentioned you had. I'm much more likely to give Botox a try. Thanks!

  • 8 Tips to Help Your Teenager Become Credit Smart   16 years 10 weeks ago

    Hi,

Nice guide of how to use a credit card. Although I believe there's a much better way to avoid the possible problems. Not to have a credit card.

Getting in debt is one of the biggest mistakes if you want to keep your finances healthy.

When purchasing groceries we have started looking at other cheaper brands. I've always been caught up on picking up the highest profile brand because it must be the best. Now I discover that i've been a fool to marketing and there are smaller brands that are even better at a lower price.

  • Emergency Plan: Better Than an Emergency Fund   16 years 10 weeks ago

I wouldn't blindly ask family for help. You'll be suprised at the emotional strings attached unless you are very lucky. That may be a little cynical but it is my experience. The trick is never to be indebted to someone, and should only be the last resort.

  • 8 Tips to Help Your Teenager Become Credit Smart   16 years 10 weeks ago

This is a super article. I'm in the UK but the principles are the same. I don't think we do enough to teach our children how to look after themselves without debt, as debt for our generation seems to be the norm.

    sir,

I am impressed with your comment. I need your idea/help/advice on how to remove a dent of a petrol tank of a motorcycle which has a small mouth and without cutting the tank and without losing the paint outside of the tank.

Thanks in advance for your response.

I remember early on in one of my psychology classes we learned that we cry because we are sad, and we can be sad because we cry. I think the same is with happy ... you can smile because you are happy, or you can be happy because you smile.

As a blackbelt technique in the art of leading a happier life, you can use a "ticker" to count your happy thoughts throughout the day. You get more of what you measure, so simply paying attention to your happy thoughts causes them to multiply. By ticker, I simply mean a little hand-held counter that you can click and count your way through the day.

  • Best Money Tips: What You Need to Know About Social Security   16 years 10 weeks ago

Social Security is broke. The trust fund has no money in it. Only IOUs. Most Americans don't know this. Our government took and spent all the cash.

  • DIY - Silk Flower Brooch   16 years 10 weeks ago

  • Contingency Plans   16 years 10 weeks ago

This post and the previous one (Is Just Leaving Some Slack Better Than a Plan?) are intended as a pair.

Budgeting—especially the way most people do it, where they budget down to the penny—suffers from the flaw of being inflexible. One way to deal with that inflexibility is to just leave some slack in the budget. You can do that either casually (by simply not budgeting down to the penny) or explicitly (by including a specific amount of slack in the plan). Either way can work.

But I think, especially if you're a natural planner anyway, making a contingency plan is superior to either option. You get the advantages of planning down to the penny—no slack left sitting around waiting for you to figure out what to do with it—while also getting the flexibility that slack provides, because you've already decided which aspects of your plan only go into effect if things go well.

At least, that's what I meant to say.
