  • Early Holiday Shopping: Why I Finish by Thanksgiving   14 years 30 weeks ago

I totally agree. And my self imposed deadline is the same. Mail the cards off on Black Friday and start baking cookies!

I also decorate in stages through December - starting with the outside on Thanksgiving weekend (weather permitting) and ending with the tree on the Fourth Sunday of Advent (it then stays up until 12th Night). I'd rather go to the "Nutcraker" and the "Carol Singalong" than the mall - even without the crowds. Plus it's easier to fit shopping for gifts into the budget if it's spread out a bit.

  • Will A Dental Discount Plan Save You Money?   14 years 30 weeks ago

As with anything you pay for as a consumer, the best practice in choosing a dentist or dental plan - discount or otherwise - is to understand your family's needs and be able to sift through the many options available to you as a consumer to find the option that will work best for you - the one that will provide the value you deserve. Discount dental plans are a viable solution for many individuals and families! With a reputable dental discount plan, a family of four can save on average $1,000 to $1,200 a year! When you factor this against the program fee you'll pay for access to the discounts these contracted providers will provide, it can be a great alternative to paying cash or to opting for dental insurance. Today, there are several dental marketplace sites that can help you choose the dental plan that's right for you and even shop for the right dentist or dental specialist based on consumer reviews. The same dentists you can access as a cash paying patient are the same dentists and quailty of dentists you can access through a dental discount program. A great advantage of a dental discount program is that you have the freedom to choose from an entire network of participating providers - you aren't limited to one! You simply have to find the one that's right for you - that rule of thumb applies to your dental plan of choice as well as your choice in the dentist who will care for you and your family, and it applies whether you're paying cash, covered by dental insurance or using a discount program. Something else to think about in considering the value a dental discount program can provide, and an added bonus to many discount dental programs, is that you can often purchase a discount dental plan that includes other health- and wellness-related products as part of your low monthly or annual fee. Often times, you can purchase a dental and vision savings program that for the same program fee that covers your entire family, provides savings on dental care as well as vision care! Other products typically available can include discount prescription, hearing, chiropractic and more. So when you consider the discounts on your dental services against the program fees you'll pay for access to the discounts, consider the savings you can realize beyond dental and look for a program that saves you on more than just dental! If you take the time to fin the dental discount program that's right for you and your family, you find the dentist who provides the care and treatment you trust, and you opt for a discount program that includes more than just discounts on dental care, you will get what you pay for...and you'll be glad you did!

  • 3 Hidden Dangers of Refinancing Your Mortgage   14 years 30 weeks ago

It is so important to emphasize the scope of the decision to refinance; the situation for the homeowner really has to be just right for refinancing to be the right decision. It is NOT a quick fix and something to decide on in a hurry. If homeowners keep this in mind along with the risks you so clearly outlined here, I think a lot of people will be able to avoid the risk of losing their homes. Yet again, solid advice everyone should follow!

  • 25 Ways to Entertain Your Child for Free or Cheap   14 years 30 weeks ago

One of my favorite memories with my sons when they were little was to make bubbles. This recipe should be used outside and avoid getting it on car finishes: 1 part ultra-Joy brand or 1-1/2 parts "cooked" Dawn brand
8 parts pure water (we used distilled)
1/4 part or less light corn syrup or glycerin

We bent metal coat hangers for large wands. It will make very large bubbles and great memories!

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   14 years 30 weeks ago

A sellers agent who represents the buyer owes a fiduciary relationship to each party. If the sellers agent in your situation revealed "juicy" information to you about the home and the seller's motivation then they were very unethical and should lose their license. They were probably telling the seller information about you that shouldn't have been passed back to them. That is the reason for a buyers agent. To protect your best interests.

  • Ask the Readers: Will You Buy a Halloween Costume this Year?   14 years 30 weeks ago

I've never bought a Halloween costume. If I were to buy one this year, it would be for my dog, but I'm not even likely to do that either. I don't celebrate Halloween or go to Halloween parties, so it seems irrelevant.

I'm with you. We have 26 relatives and they're scattered along the east coast. I hate shopping and start in January to find the most amazing things with very little stress. We mail out the week of Thanksgiving then sit around and bake cookies. Much more fun.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Use Online Banking?   14 years 30 weeks ago

well,i dont expect to win anything, coz I am not from US, but I am Europe.
I use online banking since 2003, and have had an electronic account since I was twelve. Never had a checkbook, and never seen more than 3 checks in my life, and I am 33. Even in my first students jobs, all my salary since then, had been paid electronically.
But I guess, I remember I have read once, that there are vast differences in the banking methods between US and EU, thats probably why most money banking related tips from US blogs don't really help me at all :)

    Regarding your point about fees.

If you are able to remortgage and include all the fees in the new loan and the rate is lower than you currently have - you absolutely should remortgage. Yes the new rate is higher than it would be for a loan with fees and points. However, since the new rate is lower anyways - what does it matter that you could have gotten lower - if getting the lower rate means paying fees that you do not want to pay.

I got a 15 year 5.25% loan in 2008, a 10 year 4% loan in 2010 and 3.5% 10 year loan in 2011. All 3 loans came with no points and no closing cost paid by me - yes as I mentioned above I realize my rate is highter. However, I was able to remortage 1 year after I last did, pay nothing out of pocket and decrease my rate by .5%.

I might even have another few chances to remortgage again!!!!

Mike will be a combination of what I have and what I can find at the Goodwill. I don't believe in spending a ton of money on a new costume from a halloween store

Looks like I will be reusing an old pirate costume that I bought a couple of years ago. It's not the most original costume, but I think this year is going to be a little more "low-key" of a Halloween.

  • Ask the Readers: Will You Buy a Halloween Costume this Year?   14 years 30 weeks ago

Yeah, we ended up splurging on a pirate costume for our 1.5 yr old daughter... didn't think we'd actually buy a costume, but my mother-in-law just passed away and I'm not in the mood to make one this year. This will be our daughter's first year trick-or-treating, so we do want to make it special :-)
