Sean is right. Your family is being really inconsiderate.

    ಠ_ಠ

I understand they probably love you a lot and are only bugging you because they want to spend time with you. But you have to make them understand that this is affecting your health.

Maybe you can provide a different way for them to communicate with you, like instead of having them wake you up to talk to you, have them write you emails or record videos.

You are right in everything you say! Ice cream is just an example of a treat you can have in the morning. You can also replace that with a healthier protein shake or fruit cup.

I like ice cream and I used to eat a scoop at night. I switched it to the mornings so there's no net gain in calories consumed during the day. I just moved it to a time that would entice me to wake up.

Ideally, I should switch out ice cream with another treat I like even better that has less calories--Taiwanese shaved ice treats. But they are harder to make and I don't have time in the mornings.

Very true. I feel like a completely different person when I get enough sleep. I feel like there's nothing I cannot accomplish!

Thanks I'm in process of cleaning/decluttering the house and have a big bin (which I'm getting rid of too) with a bunch of items I was fence-sitting on if I really should get rid of them... this helps me sway it in the right direction.
    Thanks!

  • 25 Things to Throw Out Today   14 years 37 weeks ago

This is a great list, but something was completely overlooked: Exactly HOW to safely dispose of unwanted/expired medications. If you simply "throw them out" you can risk causing damage to the environment and/or making other people or animals very sick.

The FDA has a good guide here: http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm101653.htm

  • Seven Lessons Learned from Working Retail   14 years 37 weeks ago

I work for a big box retailer, and since they moved me to a certain department, I've been hit by customers TWICE. The first time it was three weeks in my new department. The next time was about six months after that.

I hate retail, but it was this or nothing. I'm looking to get out when I can find a job with set hours. I hate not getting breaks (because I'm the only one in the department and there's no one else to cover me)and even when there are people to cover, I swear they get upset when I say I'm going to take a break.

Praying for the day I can leave and not have to be on my feet all day, and letting customers treat me like s---.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   14 years 37 weeks ago

I honestly believe that, if there were natural remedies that were effective in treating actual maladies, drug manufacturers would have pinpointed the exact ingredient and patented it years ago - there is no end to their greed. It's not that I don't WANT natural remedies to work; it's just that there is no proof that they do. You think the manufacturers of vitamins can't afford to pay for studies to see if their L-Lysine helps prevent cold sores? They can, but they won't.

Just because something is "natural", though, doesn't mean that it won't do any harm. And even if an ineffective treatment doesn't physically harm someone, spending money on useless herbs and tinctures is financially harmful, so I try to advise against it whenever possible.

  • 13 Natural and Easy Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar   14 years 37 weeks ago

    Hi, Natasha,

The best advice that I can give you is to make sure that your boyfriend eats lots of protein and very few carbohydrates. This means lots of natural, uncured lean meats (like chicken, pork, beef, egg whites, and fish) and non-starchy vegetables. These foods will sustain him while keeping his blood sugars level.

    He should avoid the following:

    sweets and pastries
    pasta and rice
    oatmeal and breakfast cereal
    potatoes and yams
    squash
    sweet fruit like bananas

I can't tell you anything about the medication that he is on because (1) I don't know what he is taking and (2) I'm not a qualified medical professional. Some pills help lower blood sugar quickly, others are more long-acting. But diet is the most important part of the equation.

If you do some Googling about "low carb diabetics", you will find a wealth of information on healthy diets. The best (and easiest) diet to follow is the South Beach Diet, if you want to find something more mainstream.

I agree that old towels and such can go to the Humane Society, and the fronts of greeting cards can go to St Judes,
extra hangers to the cleaners, etc but if you don't get around to doing any of this, guess what happens? You die and someone else has to get rid of it all. I spent several months clearing out a relatives's home, and I can tell you that when you are grieving, you don't have the time or energy to donate the old towels, etc.....a lot gets tossed for expediency's sake. One person can only do so much and there are usually more important matters to attend to. There isn't the time to find "homes" for everything....so do it now! Don't leave it all for one of your family members to do!

YES! And animal hospitals, too. Old sheets, towels, blankets. We go through them rapidly at the animal ER with really sick pets. Also, old t shirts! We put them on dogs that have sutures, so they cant chew them out. We will take any size, from baby onesies (think cats and chihuahuas), to kid t shirts, to XXXL!

  • 5 Effective Sleep Tips You Haven't Tried Yet   14 years 37 weeks ago

Hi, What would be your advice to the night-shifters? I work in the hospital three nights not always in a row, and have to sleep during the day time. I wake up at about 11 am to go to the BR, than force myself to sleep more, wake up again at around 2 pm restless, with aching body. Finally sleep one-two more hours before to go to work. Many times leg cramp wake me up. I take Leg Cramps homeopathy pills and they help a little bit. I cannot change my job at this time.

When getting rid of old sheets, pillows and blankets, consider donating to animal shelters. Many homeless animals get great comfort in just having something warm to sleep on and the need for these items never goes away. Even if they are worn, stained or otherwise in poor condition, shelters will take them!

  • 8 Simple Ways to Make Your Refrigerator More Efficient   14 years 37 weeks ago

I really think our fridge is on it's last legs so we'll soon be looking for a new one. Some of these tips will help us shop for a new one and it will also keep our old one running a little longer.

I definitely wanted to get a fridge with the freezer in the bottom, but from hat you wrote I'm reconsidering this. I would much rather save money on energy than go for looks.

  • Do Daily Deals Make Good Gifts?   14 years 37 weeks ago

I think it depends who you are giving the deals to. I would much rather buy the deal and then take someone out. I'd hate to buy the deals for them to go unused.

  • Ask The Readers: How Do You Buy Music?   14 years 37 weeks ago

I flip between Amazon & iTunes. Usually Amazon when they have an album for $5; iTunes when I want an individual song. But I just realized it has been a few months since I purchased music: Thank you, Pandora!
