Sometimes it is better to go through the bankruptcy than to dig into the retirement account and accrue boat loads of penalties.

Dinosaur alert: I listen to the classical station on the radio and very occasionally (think: every couple of years) buy a CD. Yep, I'm old.

I liked you on Facebook. (But of course I liked you before that.)

  • Do Daily Deals Make Good Gifts?   14 years 44 weeks ago

My parents gave my husband a "deal" as part of his Christmas gift last year. It was a one-night stay and two rounds of golf at a resort about four hours from our house. The deal expired in May 2011, so he had about 5 months to use it after Christmas. He thought it was a great gift, and I didn't mind tagging along for the getaway. He used both rounds of golf, while I enjoyed my time relaxing at the resort's pool.

  • Two Dozen Uses For Toothpaste (Aside From Cleaning Your Teeth)   14 years 44 weeks ago

    Hi Molly,
In response to your post, are your newly married friends still your friends? If anyone put toothpaste on my car, that was left there for 3 days, I would strangle them. But to hear that the car had been in freezing conditions over those 3 days, almost spells out that the toothpaste would have definitely stripped the paintwork on their car.

    Hi guest,
What ratio of toothpaste to water do you use? and how do you use it, i.e. exterior, or via syringe? Cheers

I tend to buy music digitally nowadays, but I have been tempted to try some of the new music library services (such as Spotify and Grooveshark). Also, I love to use Pandora -- especially when I am at the gym and can't decide what I want to listen to.

  • Fee Fighters: Fighting for Low Credit Card Processing Fees   14 years 44 weeks ago

    @ Gerald

The guys (and girls) at Fee Fighters will help a business owner to decipher the quotes that she receives to secure low rates. Their service functions much like ours in that businesses benefit from neutral advice and guidance without the sales pressure. Additionally, business owners are free to call or email a processor's representative directly should they choose to do so.

"When pressed for reasons why they will help even beyond brokering a deal, Mohnot implied that we're all the same boat. 'Frankly, we know what it's like to be a small business. We try to save any place we can and we know merchants...do the same.'"

It's important for business owners to know how a company like Fee Fighters generates income because the business owner is indirectly paying a residual commission every month. Businesses benefit from guidance before and after a processor is selected, but the motivation for ongoing service goes beyond an initial "finder's fee" paid by the processor.

Consultancy marketplaces like Fee Fighters and CardFellow earn a residual commission from processors when a business chooses to utilize their services. Some consultancy networks also charge processors an up-front commission in addition to a residual commission.

Processors pay the marketplace a monthly commission based on a percentage of net income earned from a particular business. For example, if a marketplace has a high residual commission of 60%, and the processor earns $100 from a business's processing in a given month, the processor would pay the marketplace $60. The cycle repeats every month for as long as the business utilizes the processor's services.

Of course, it's not the only reason, but residual commission is driving factor behind why consultancy networks provide ongoing support. Their support ensures businesses stay with their chosen processor for as long as possible.

  • Free or Cheap Wall Art   14 years 44 weeks ago

Oh, and I did list a few sources for affordable art that you can buy (such as Etsy and 20x200). If you know of more, please share!

  • Free or Cheap Wall Art   14 years 44 weeks ago

You're welcome! I LOVE that website!

  • Free or Cheap Wall Art   14 years 44 weeks ago

Really? Buying local art in my community runs a few hundred dollars for a medium size canvas. Maybe it's cheaper where you are. Of course, some people can definitely afford that kind of splurge once in a while.

  • Do Daily Deals Make Good Gifts?   14 years 44 weeks ago

These are some helpful things to think about. For Christmas a couple of years ago, my wife and I bought Restaurant.com coupons for some of our in-laws, and most of them went unused. While they are a good deal, we think the fact that they cost more that we paid (like your note above) gave our family members pause.

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   14 years 44 weeks ago

I did some research on this, and I did try it. My objection is that baking soda actually has basic PH, which is opposite to the hair PH; therefore, using baking soda regularly probably damages the hair, even if you bring back the PH to acid with vinegar.
    Some clarifications on that?

  • Laid Off? You May Have to Fight for Unemployment Benefits   14 years 44 weeks ago

My employer, upon learning of my pregnancy had began reducing my hours. I filed and was accepted for unemployment to supplement my income if I did not get X amount of hours. I was honest with how many hours she needed to give me to prevent me from being able to collect. So I would re-open my claim, she would get notice and next thing you know I am working more hours. Then maybe a couple weeks my hours go down again. Well, I was 6 1/2-7 months pregnant when she laid me off. We had talked about me working up until just before I gave birth and that I would take PFL then return to work. Since she laid me off I still collected. I only took off a reasonable amount of time I did not claim, then resumed. Well, my claim expired and I was eligible for a new one. And, as the man who was helping me said resulted in me getting a "raise" as it was more then I was getting on my last claim. Right away my boss fights it, saying I quite. At my interview I mentioned that she had left me a voice mail the morning I was supposed to work telling me I was laid off. When the interviewer spoke with her she still tried to say I quite. When asked about the voice mail laying me off, she stuttered and then got angry and told the interviewer "Fine, just give it to her then!" The interviewer actually called me back after speaking with her to tell me, and to let me know my claim was accepted vs. waiting for the determination in the mail! This is the boss that likes to tell all her workers how we're stupid and how much smarter she is then us.

  • How to Watch Movies in the Theater for Free   14 years 44 weeks ago

I work at a movie theater, and when I first read the title, I was like 'oh man not cool' cuz I thought you were just being cheap and sneaking in. Then I kept reading and I was like 'oh he's not being a jerk he's just kind of lucky. I wish our theater did this (when I thought back I realized I'd have to WORK these free screenings, so maybe not after all). Then I saw the quip about Montana..... yeah.... my theater's in Bozeman..... Cracked up :)

  • Seven Tips for the Newly Unemployed   14 years 44 weeks ago

I quit my job last Friday due to a severe hostile working environment. It was quite possibly the most terrible situation and mentally I am not doing so well. I cant eat, barely want to sleep. I have been searching and praying for a job religiously and yet through all that I feel hopeful. There is something inside of all of us that lets us know everything will be okay.

I remember something my mom told me was that we all have it inside of us to say Yes we can. What has happened to this world? Have we all forgotten how to help each other? It seems like all the managers, employers and higher ups are all a bunch of squash bottoms if you ask me. Never seeing what is right for what is truly right.

We can sit here and blame this economy all we want but look around. This life is a job. We are living the job of life. Searching, connecting, talking, researching, giving a damn. Its all work, energy, sweat, pain, suffrage. Unemployment is the most gut wrenching hormonal time in a persons life but in it you have to laugh, smile, be happy and accept what is available. Maybe help each other more, I don't know. I just want people to be working hard, having fun, being positive and making a positive influence in what seems to be a down trodden climax of karma. (And poor choices)

  • Stay in School until the Job Market Improves?   14 years 44 weeks ago

Hahaha, oh my. If you're partying hard in college, you're doing it wrong. I will have had two weeks off this school year (Sept->Sept), the week of Christmas through New Year's (spent with family) and the week before school starts (plan to spend sleeping). College or not, I still need to pay my bills. My friends in majors where relevant student jobs are less forthcoming work for minimum wage. If they're lucky it'll be in the restaurant industry so they can take home leftovers to eat at the end of the day. Even with that level of frugality, they need to take out loans because there's only so much you can work with a full course load. The only kids partying are the ones with rich parents, and it's not like they'll ever need to learn what hard work means anyway. Maybe it was free and easy when you went to school, but college has gotten a lot more expensive since then.

  • 5 Expenses to Ditch After Age 30   14 years 44 weeks ago

When it comes to partying, I think moderation is the key. I'm 34 and married with a kid and I still like to go out and have a few beers with my friends, play some pool, etc.

I don't think it's healthy to just turn off the tap of living it up a bit from time to time.

I still play video games a few times a year to get a quick fix to bring back memories from when I used to play them when I was a kid.

With regards to credit cards, it's the higher interest ones that tend to have the best rewards programs. I just received my BMO Air Miles Gold card in the mail this week and I'm getting 1000 free Air Miles. As long as I pay my balance frequently, I'm in the game. It's all good.

    Nice post. Makes you think.

  • The Federal Minimum Wage Increases This Week - Are You Getting a Pay Raise?   14 years 44 weeks ago

they could effectively raise the minimum wage to a wage that a person working a 40 hour job can survive and bank money like others do only if they reduce the amount of pay that high paid jobs pay ....no one should make more than 50 bucks an hour and all jobs should be hourly paid. do away with sallaried jobs and pay everyone a decent wage . by placing a maximum wage and PROFIT CAPS they could effectively increase minimum wage. this would do away with people who are working 40 hour week jobs being placed in the poverty level catagory. They need to reduce the wage of the skilled worker and place an enforce caps on the amount of profit any one can make on any producr good or service! this would work. you would have regular people and rich people no one would be poor and no one would be allowed to be filthy rich either!

  • Ask The Readers: How Do You Buy Music?   14 years 44 weeks ago

I like to buy from local music stores. There's so much more underground variety in the local stores versus the major chains who only sell the most popular music. It's always fun to discover a new artist or band while fishing through the local stores. PLUS it's a great way to support small businesses.
