  • How to Watch Movies in the Theater for Free   14 years 44 weeks ago

I saw The Incredibles (#1) A month before it was advertised. It was on a whim that me and my friends went to the cinema for the hell of it (summertime is full of boredom). We looked at the films being shown and we noticed The Incredibles, we were like "hey I saw the teaser to that film, it looks good!" So we watched it..... only downfall, they still charged us. The UK might run against the current to this brilliant scheme.

Almost exclusively on iTunes. Occasionally through Amazon if they have a good deal on an album I want.

  • 10 Outdated Job-Search Techniques to Avoid   14 years 44 weeks ago

Another tip - look inside your current company. Internal hires usually have a leg up on the competition, and this can be a good way to revitalize your career and keep your benefits and seniority. Just remember to stay professional in the interview, even if your are familiar with the hiring manager. I just finished an article on 7 ways to mess up an internal application.

    Happy hunting!

  • 12 Ways to Save Cash on New Clothes   14 years 44 weeks ago

Thanks for the article - I was looking for some good ways to save money on clothes, and you came up with a few that I hadn't thought of. I admit, I still shop in the juniors department (can't quite get away with kids' stuff), and I can save a lot of money there (shopping the sales and clearance racks of course).

  • The 9 Secrets of Highly Successful Craigslist Sellers   14 years 44 weeks ago

Yes, all of the above are great. I just wish the seller I'm currently interested in buying from would reply to my emails! I know many people probably want the seller's item but at least let me know if it's sold or not, or remove the ad once you've sold it! Now I keep wondering whether or not my emails are getting through!

Could just be my impatient/anxious mind as well..

    .. but it's been a few days!...

    ..kay, now I'm ranting, sorry.

I mostly use iTunes for myself, but I still buy physical CDs for family members like my mother who are a little behind the times. :)

I buy MP3s thru Amazon. Best prices and fewer limitations than iTunes.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   14 years 44 weeks ago

My husband and I used to get cold sores ALL the time. We'd share them back and forth for months! We're on the water a lot so most of the time the culprit was sun. I had sort of a "DOH!" moment when I realized it, and now we are both religious about applying high SPF lip balm whenever we're out. I really should buy it by the gross.

But sometimes we forget or it wears off, and occasionally stress is the cause, so we still get them from time to time. I've long had a prescription for acyclovir (pills) which works wonders for us. Our 'lead time' is longer than some here - a day - so if we're good about taking the pills, we can really knock down the size and severity of the blister. Rarely does it prevent them altogether, sadly, but I remember the bad old days and NEVER let my scrip run low. Abreva has also been a godsend, but I ran out recently and tried the 3M version - total crap. It did numb the area but did nothing for healing.

Now when either of us gets sores, we isolate our lips - no kissing, no sharing drinks, etc. Air kisses only! His last one (stress-caused and sun-enhanced) has lasted quite awhile as we were on a boat and couldn't get to a store to get Abreva. During the worst of it, I took an acyclovir pill once a day as a preventative measure and I didn't break out.

I've tried L-lysine and a number of other holistic treatments and they didn't do a thing.

Another suggestion: take Advil to reduce the swelling of the lip. I always feel a little run down on the first day or two of a cold sore, and I've found Advil helps with the pain and swelling. Not tons, but any relief is welcome when you know you're going to look like a leper for a couple weeks!

  • How to Save on School Supplies Without Going Crazy   14 years 44 weeks ago

Not that wrapping paper is a school supply, just that it's one of those basic necessities that I always overpay for because I never think to go to the dollar store.

  • How to Save on School Supplies Without Going Crazy   14 years 44 weeks ago

How do dollar stores stack up against office supply stores for school supplies? I haven't shopped for school stuff since I was a kid, so I don't really know where one goes for these things, but it always SEEMS like dollar stores have a decent selection of, like, wrapping paper.

  • Tax Penalties for Early Retirement Withdrawals   14 years 44 weeks ago

I withdrew retirement money early, actually! None of the alternative options for getting money were available to me at the time, and it was a desperate situation a few years ago. It was extremely expensive! I had the equivalent of a 401k, but for government workers (I believe it was a 403b?? but my memory may be failing me!) I had them take taxes out before I "cashed it in"; and then when I filed my income taxes for the year I took the money out of the retirement account, I had to pay a 10% penalty on top of the pre-paid taxes for early withdrawal. As if that wasn't enough, the money put me into a higher tax bracket, causing me to have to pay more in taxes than I had ever paid in previous years!

I highly recommend to anyone considering taking money from retirement early to avoid it if at all possible.

Have any readers withdrawn from their retirement accounts prematurely? If so, what was your experience?

  • What if the Mortgage Interest Deduction Went Away?   14 years 44 weeks ago

Fix the government's salary, pension, healthcare, and other fringe benefits to be like the rest of us citizens before hitting the rest of us taxpayers. I am sure we would save a ton of money in getting our government off of their pedestals. Didn't we fight for our independence years ago to refrain from paying taxes to England's royalty? Our U.S. government has created a palace for themselves, and this needs to be taken away ... NOW!!!

  • Ask The Readers: How Do You Buy Music?   14 years 44 weeks ago

I usually buy on Itunes but would buy on Amazon but it won't let me due to my location. American living overseas. I can buy stuff on Amazon and ships to my APO address, but I can't buy music from them.....

  • Credit Card and Debt Settlement? Would you Consider it? (Your Chance to Win $10!)   14 years 44 weeks ago

I have used debt settlement before after looking at other ways to reduce my debts. It worked out great for me because i owed around $80,000 and only had to pay $14'000 of that. My monthly payments where reduced massively and i can now afford to treat my kids. Highly recommend it to anyone with large un-secure debt

A lot of times the stores are close enough together that you can get all the lost leaders in the same trip. I also found Walgreens had some good buys. My children are grown so I go get all the supplies on sale and donate them to the neighborhood school. I get to buy things for a penny or two and also help someone out. Love when you can go into a store a buy a bad full of things for 27 cents...
