I started couponing almost a year ago and have done really well, especially being able to give grocery and household items to needy in our area. However, The Coupon Workshop would be a great place for me to learn even more as I feel I am still spending more than I should.
I can agree on that rich isn't a number, it's entirely dependent on what kind of lifestyle that you have. In my opinion, you are rich if you have enough passive income to cover all of your expenses on a daily basis, without having to work physically.
Money don't make you happy, but neither do poverty.
I tried this with Dish Network and they wouldn't give me free HBO and Showtime without signing up for paperless billing/auto-pay. Anybody else have better luck?
I'd like to see an update to the Tightwad Gazette, you know, black-belt frugality for the digital age. (Hey, that's a pretty good subtitle for a book.) I've got the basics down, but I'd like more inspiration and advanced techniques!
Wow, all I did was google search on "How to change my life" and your post popped up. I have read it a-z and I am really glad I have come across this article! It feels like such a real idea already. I am definitely gonna do this. The best of luck to me!
I am also very proud of you for having challenged the ordinary and seeking change!
Yes, I could learn more about frugality. I'm always curious about what others are spending, using comparable situations as benchmarks. And I consistently appreciate knowing what deals are available on retail goods and services and how to save money on utilities (phone, cell, power).
I'm young (23), so I'm sure there are some things I'll probably end up learning over the years, things that really just come from experience. But I actually feel like I have an excellent balance in my life at the moment and am saving far more than my peers. I like to visit sites like Wise Bread to learn from others' experiences and see if there's anything that might be applicable to my life, but I think my parents instilled some really great financial values in me.
Even though I'm a die hard frugalista, there's always something more to learn. Right now I'm exploring foraging. It's fun and free. Our local nature center gives twice yearly seminars, (mostly to Scout troups). These past few years I've added purslane as a vegetable, wild raspberries, mint (to put in iced tea), and dandelion wine to the repetoire.
this is my first winter in my own home and the house had an addition put on in the 1970's that caused a need for second dual stage heat pump. i tend to keep the addition a little warmer anyway because that's the room my old arthritic dog sleeps in.
the main part of the house only gets a little airflow from the addition due to the angle of the single connecting doorway.
I am in the Atlanta area (Decatur) and I would love to go to the Coupon workshop. I have picky eaters and no spare time. I have been trying to coupon but can't prepare well enough and then I don't save that much.
Fees- the unstated dirty word.
I had an instance where I had a gas charge or 10.01 that the cashier accidentally ran 6 times thinking the machine was broken. I couldnt really extra 5 charges that drove me to 5 extra fees. The bank tried to tell me the following day that there was nothing I could do but pay it. Then I went back to the gas station and they said that, that many charges couldn't happen. So I fought with the bank and the gas station with a whole month. Meanwhile my paycheck was consumed in fees which caused all my other auto-pay bills to bounce. After that time the bank manager finally agreed that it was a mistake and said that they were willing to refund half of the fees because they wanted to be fair and would contest the extra charges as a result.
So I only lost about $1800 in banking and other fees since they were doing me a favor. Thank you chase bank!
The bottom line for everybody, expect to loose your Security, All the landlords will keep it no matter what, and if you take them to court an win the case, still you have to keep fightig to collect your money, so think smart, live the last month without paying rent, if your landlord wanto to start an eviction process is going to take him a little over a month to get you out!! THAT IS HOW YOU COLLECT YOUR SECURITY!!! LANDLORDS LOVE TO RIP THE SECURITY OFF THE TENANTS!!
Thanks, Christine. Becoming self-employed is a great opportunity; but the variable income can be hard to adjust to. All I can say is use a program such as QuickBooks or something similar to track expenses and income!
Good point, Khaleef. I try not to touch my slush fund when my income is steady. Usually I'm pretty good about that. Thankfully I'm not a big spender to begin with.

Tax in the Chicago area is 10%, so I double the tax and that's the tip.

If I don't have all my receipts, do records of my purchases in my bank statements suffice?

I like the JCPenny coupon code. I was able to get a great pair of rain boots for only $10 shipped. Great site. Thanks for the info and the giveaway!

Thanks Sonja. It probably helps that I've been acting as the quasi-CFO for my husband's business for years; that's probably why I'm so organized!
