Actually, it's pre-hacked if you buy those cheap Chinese brand DVD players. Those $20 Chinese brand DVD players can play all region DVDs!

I had a $200 GE, the welcome screen was much nicer, it's quiet and looks good with my TV bench. However, it only plays region 1 DVDs and broke down the week after the warrantee expires. I just got my Chinese brand DVD player KACO for only $14.99 at Best Buy. I couldn't believe it! I can now play my Japanese movies, Brit-coms and everything!

how few people know this simple trick. I bought my first multi-region player for $200. As it turns out, someone had just used a code on a $70 player and repackaged it. Now, I know better. Power to the people!

  • Buy a drink, get a free Whopper - every single day?   19 years 2 weeks ago

    Thanks, Burgermeister!

My buddy John, who is what you might call lazy and greedy, if you were being brutally honest, tried using the same code, but our local BK noticed and called him out on it, so he makes sure to do the survery every day (it's sort of a ritual for us now, first thing in the morning).

I thought about posting what you mentioned, that is, code-faking, but I felt that ethically, it stepped slightly over the ethical line because it's dishonest. Mind you, so is filling out a survey with all perfect marks when the place isn't perfect, so I guess I don't want to make too many judgement calls.

Now, I had NO IDEA about the onions rings. This is why we freaking love Wise Bread readers. So Burgermeister, should you want to blog for us, please please contact our admins. We can always use a devious, frugal mind like yours.

I've long suffered from my inability to watch Korean films, which are ALWAYS released here as code 3, and somehow, never re-released so that I can watch them. I had no idea that this was possible.

  • FREE DVD - Pirates 2 or Cars.   19 years 2 weeks ago

Keep 'em coming folks. I enjoy reading every entry. So far, Cars seems to be the unpopular DVD, so think of the children...please, think of the children!

  • FREE DVD - Pirates 2 or Cars.   19 years 2 weeks ago

The irony of your decision to award me the Pirates DVD is that I don't resort to piracy to download it illegally.

  • FREE DVD - Pirates 2 or Cars.   19 years 2 weeks ago

I actually don't own many DVDs, just because I could never part with the money for them. I usually used said money on useless things like food. : (

I've been ridiculed for too long for not having Pirates of the Caribbean in my [already pitiful] inventory of DVDs, and I'd love to rub peoples' faces in a brand-new, glorious Pirates DVD.

Also, the Pirates sequel had just come out when I was visiting California during the summer. I remember going to a beach there, and we chose a fire pit next to a bunch of pirates. Because of that, every time I see PoTC, I think of those pirates on the beach, roasting sausages on a stick or playing volleyball. It's a pretty great mental image of Jack Sparrow.

  • Street market scams. Don't believe the hype.   19 years 2 weeks ago

    Hello everyone.

It has been brought to our attention that things are getting a little abusive in this thread. We've removed some of the more offensive remarks.

While we welcome open discussions, we also want to keep this a civil place where everyone will feel comfortable visiting.

A big thank you for the readers who spoke up in this thread to counter the rudeness. I apologize that by deleting some of the offending comments your comments may now look a little bit nonsensical.

Oh yeah. Please think of the children.

    Yours truly, Will

    p.s. not British

Let's be honest, not many ladies would turn Bond down, or Hugh Grant, Ralph Feinnes, Jude Law, do I need to go on? English women...hmm, Kate Beckinsale seems to be flying high right now. So, this whole thing is silly. The scams are scary because so many people fall for them, including moi. I still feel foolish 12 years later.

  • Street market scams. Don't believe the hype.   19 years 2 weeks ago

But then, I'm a sucker for the Queens English. Rrrowr.

I meant to add that I liked the video about the knife-scam, Paul. The one about the face creams, however, distrubed me on a level that I don't want to think about just now.

  • The Magic Marker Money Safe   19 years 2 weeks ago

Little tricks like this pop-up on the net regularly. Although I love the ingenuity of the creator of some of these, I can't help but admit that if I were to ever utilize these security tips to safe-store my valuables or money, I would no longer need to be weary of thieves. The thing I would need to worry about is me forgetting what is stored where.

calm down calm down. both the red coats and yanks have their problems. the americans are unfortunately known for obesity, and the brits are just plain ugly. we can all just be happy we aren't french...

  • Street market scams. Don't believe the hype.   19 years 2 weeks ago

We seem to have drifted away from the subject matter at hand. Straight white blinging teeth or crooked mess, no-one deserves to be taken for a ride by a bunch of scam artists. I hope at least most of you have learned a little from the post, other than the fact that there are quite a few people out there with opinions that have no place in a blog about living large on a small budget. Unless, of course, you know a place to get free teeth whitening done?

  • Street market scams. Don't believe the hype.   19 years 2 weeks ago

Jeez, you're ALL stupid. The world is screwed when we have people make judgments based on nationality.

Not all British have messed up teath, and not all Americans are fat.

    Get over yourselves.

    That's right!

We're number one! We're number one!

In terms of obesity, anyway. We're clearly not winning the punctuation wars. though.

I am a proud Brit and I am not fat...care to explain that chap?

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   19 years 2 weeks ago

We bought our house without using a buyer's agent. To do so, you should be aware that the seller's agent is not just representing your interests but if you are confident and aware of how things work (it was our third time through the process) it has the potential to save you a bundle. The first deal we set up on the house fell through when our current house did not sell quickly enough. We then got an offer for considerably less than we wanted. The house we wanted to buy still had not sold. We came in with a new offer for considerably less than our original offer reflecting the lower sales price of our house. The real estate agent waived half the commission, bringing the offer in line with the seller's needs and we closed shortly thereafter. We would not be in this house now if we had been using our own agent.

  • When Good Food Goes Bad Part VI: Apples   19 years 2 weeks ago

I have also been the recipient of Too Many Apples. Here's a few more ideas:

If you do a roast of some sort (chicken and pork work well with this), throw some peeled, cored, and quartered apples in with your other veggies. Put them in during the last half hour or so of cooking so they don't go to mush.

There's a few recipes floating around for apple cake, made with chopped apples in the mix. However, applesauce is also a respectable fat replacer for cake mixes (chocolate covers up the apple flavor just fine) or in quick breads, like zucchini or nut.

  • Buy a drink, get a free Whopper - every single day?   19 years 2 weeks ago

You only have to complete it once a month. And when you do that, make a note of the two letter characters that are the beginning of the code. For example the code I got for April 2007 is PL86859. Well every time I go, I simply use the same code. And if I go with a friend, he writes down a variant, but with those beginning letters. It's as simple as that, no need to do that laborious survey every time.

Another tip: If you are ordering to go, ask to substitute that overpriced drink ($1 for 12 oz of weakly carbonated water? - WTF?) with a small onion ring (they still take in $1 from you), and provide your own soda. I and up leaving with a small onion ring, medium fries and a Whopper for $2.34. If your friend is in on it, pick up a 2 liter RC Cola for $1.39.

my teeth are fine. I think I'd rather have horrible teeth though, than a horrible personality.

  • FREE DVD - Pirates 2 or Cars.   19 years 2 weeks ago

I tried to burn a copy of my friends "Cars" DVD but there was some sort of program that prevents people from burning Disney/Pixar DVD's. Keep it frugal... Thanx

  • FREE DVD - Pirates 2 or Cars.   19 years 2 weeks ago

They're both good DVDs and I might watch it once or twice, but I would pretty much sell it and make a few dollars. That's not as noble as donating it to my alma mater's video collection, but on the other hand the sooner I get out of debt the sooner I can donate to my alma mater's capital campaigns!
