  • Six Ways to Stay Warm and Reduce the Heating Bill   18 years 12 weeks ago

Raising the humidity WILL make you feel much warmer, in high heat situations (exactly when you do not want to feel warmer). In cold situations this just makes you feel colder.

If you get a dehumidifier then you will feel warmer in the cold. Many people get humidifiers and dehumidifiers mixed up.

I'm hardly a Papa Murphy's apologist, but I have a feeling you've just been bitten by ineffective management at one particular store. Or, at least, I've never had this problem with the two different stores I've been to.

Papa Murphy's is a franchise store so it may be futile to contact their corporate HQ, but it couldn't hurt either.

Did you send a letter to the manager or to the corporate website.

Its always easy to complain about something, but if you don't tell someone who can effect change, it doesn't do any good.

We recently had a bad experience at a McDonald's drive-thru (imagine that) and I submitted a comment via their website and got a call of apology from the local franchise owner and a card for a free meal for our family.

A quick check of their website finds their feedback page here.

Fireplaces aren't very efficient, even though you can improve them with ventilated grates (made of tubes with an attached fan to circulate the heat into the room. When you're not using the fireplace, some of your heat goes right up the chimney even when the flue is closed. Fireplaces are nice decorations, but not so great for heating.

Wood-burning stoves are far more efficient... they really get good and hot, and will radiate significant heat into the room even from the stove pipe. You'll get far more heat from every log if you burn it in a stove.

Raise the humidity in the house, and you'll feel just as comfortable with the thermostat set several degrees lower.

Combine this with dressing up a bit warmer, and you might comfortably drop the temperature a good eight degrees or more.

  • Bridging The Gap From Dining Out To Eating In   18 years 12 weeks ago

Frozen pizza, scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, mac and cheese -- those are some of my favorite quick meals. Thanks for the mentions. Having a perfect, well-balanced meal every night can be a lot of pressure so going for a well-balanced day or week is a good target.

This has reminded me of a tip from my cooking teacher (home ec teacher by trade with a bit of gourmet at the college class): she said most people cook the same 5-10 meals and just cycle them through every week or so; then they try a new recipe and if it's good, add it to the rotation and possibly replace one that they're tired of. I think that helped me to realize that I didn't have to constantly try new things.

If you use an electric room heater in your bedroom at night, you can then turn the heat WAY DOWN for the entire rest of the house at night.

We always had great experiences with Papa Murphy's. The food was good, they were in our local wal-mart so we would order on our way in to pick up diapers and such and then pick up the pizza on the way home. I live in the suburbs of Atlanta and while our Wal-Mart is very busy the PM's wasn't so busy it was a miserable experience. Being a franchise I'd guess it's just that they don't have good controls on the various franchisees. Prices were pretty nice too. Coupons probably helped my perception of that, but I recall especially liking their cheesy breadsticks for only a couple bucks as a way of adding to the meal of any given night.

My fault for ordering pepperoni. I should have done the artichoke chicken pizza.

Those are some unusual and interesting ideas. I never thought of the snacking one before, but it's great for keeping you from getting ravenous while you're trying to cook.

And I have recently named a creation "ugly cake" after I had to scrape off the burned parts and it fell apart and half the frosting melted while the other half stayed in big blobs. Oops, oops, and triple oops!

Another tactic is to have a few things you like that are very easy to make (or that feel easy to make to you), also known as bachelor food. Things like macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, scrambled eggs, soup, or stir-fry for meals and toast, fruit, or popcorn for snacks. I knew someone who liked to mix tomato sauce with tuna. It doesn't matter if it sounds disgusting to other people, if everyone eating likes it okay and it's not too bad for you, it's good.

  • Tips for Perimeter Perusing at Target   18 years 12 weeks ago

I had to cut back on the Target clearance after I was getting a little out of hand.  I would dream of Target.... but I still love to look at the food items (and ocassionally the makeup.)  My best haul ever was buying a bunch of those Brita on tap water filters for $1.72 each.  They were CLEARLY marked, but there were 12 or so sitting on an endcap.  I bought half, so as not to be greedy.  After my filter broke a few weeks later, I turned those babies around on Ebay for $21 each!  Tidy profit, indeed!

My other best buy was getting a bunch of American Crew grooming spray for my hubby.  He loves that stuff, but I couldn't justify spending $15 a bottle on it.  I got him 7 bottles for $.87 each.  We just ran out a month or so ago, and I want to cry!

Also, thanks to the Target employee for verifying my info.  Good to hear that we all have an equal chance at scoring some cheap goods!

  • Blergh! Could you eat these strange canned foods?   18 years 12 weeks ago

Japanese food tends to have all sorts of cool ways to make things. Though I haven't tried canned bread, I'd imagine it's like the cake-in-a-cup they have in Japan, which is very delicious and simple to make.

Also, whale meat is rather delicious. I'm not sure if that can has blubber in it, because it's whale curry. I'd say whale tastes like a cross between beef and tuna, and is even great as sashimi (tastes rather fancy). It looks exactly like beef, too. However, with pressure on Japan to stop selling whale meat, I doubt they still have canned whale curry.

Maybe they were making the pizzas in alphabetical order of toppings? (e.g. anchocy pizzas first, then bacon, etc)

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   18 years 12 weeks ago

I waited over 30 mins before I started growling a "harumphing", but I did have to pay for the pizza in advance, and was then told "it'll be out in a few minutes."

I would have argued for my money back if I didn't have a hungry family to go home to.

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   18 years 12 weeks ago

While, by all means the staff were completely in the wrong, it's your own fault for waiting there for 80 minutes. When I've gone to Papa Murphy's, the pizza has almost always been there waiting for me. When it's particularly busy, I sometimes have to wait a few minutes, but I would be talking to a manager and/or walking out the door well before 80 minutes had passed, probably before even 30 minutes had passed. You even rewarded them for their horrible service by paying them money for the pizza.

  • Multi-Level Marketing: The Future or Folly?   18 years 12 weeks ago

I was fortunate because when I started my first online business I had ZERO bad experiences to deter me or influence me from my success. I replaced my corporate annual income within 6 months.
It was 100% learning and implementing what I learned consistently, due diligence, following the experts to the T.
Be willing to learn and be coachable.

I highly recommend Jim Rohn, Dale Calvert and Earl Nightingale.

Jim's instructions included things like "Take a Walk today" - who would think that walking had anything to do with my marketing venture....ironically getting out the baby stroller and walking through our town gave me more prospects and helped me meet more people than I ever expected....but I never start out saying 'who can I prospect on my walk'...I just walked as instructed and after a few days, people would stop me and say I see you walking everyday - that started the conversation and eventually I had a network of associates...not over night but over time.

Dale taught me about creative ways to give and made my marketing experiences fun. I enjoyed the time I was working for myself and found Dale's Lead Generation suggestions very productive. I was fully committed to my success. 21 ways to Generate Leads in your own backyard. I own it. You can too at success.erichnwise.com

My favorite audio series is "Lead the Field" by Earl Nightingale - I listen to his work over and over and highly recommend everyone get a personal copy. I am eternally grateful to Bob Proctor for sending me a copy of "Lead the Field".

I've added more wonderful coaches over the years and I generously share "Think and Grow Rich" principles and "Law of Attraction" techniques with my downline.

Network Marketing is not for everyone - it works for me.
and as I look back, I'm very thankful I got oursourced, downsized
and my job went overseas. 'Yesterday' I was a technician, Today I am a President.

  • Tips for Perimeter Perusing at Target   18 years 12 weeks ago

It's funny to read this today, because some of my latest Target haul is actually still sitting out in my car. I got on clearance:

A grill cover, which we had been meaning to buy since we bought our grill last May

A sunshade for the back window of the car. I didn't even know these existed, but if the sun ever comes back I'm sure our baby will appreciate it.

A lipstick with a tiny nick in it.

A bunch of cans of Old El Paso chiles.

Several bags of pumpkin pie spice flavored Archer Farms coffee.

A dented can of Archer Farms hot cocoa.

A tube of Dove moisturizing face wash.

I can't even remember what else. So much clearance junk out there yesterday.

If you're going to have to bake the pizza yourself anyway, wouldn't it be faster/cheaper to get a frozen pizza from the supermarket? I'm trying but I don't see how this makes sense.

  • The Pros and Cons of Dollar-Cost Averaging   18 years 12 weeks ago

I agree... DCA does offer some comfort to investors, especially during a volatile market. I also agree with IO that DCA eliminates the need to "time the market" which as everyone here as already noted, is almost impossible to do. There are some noteworthy analysts that question the real benefits of DCA but personally, I like it.

Glad everyone is enjoying this post :)

Another chime in for make your own pizza.

The dough is pretty easy to make, my wife makes a wheat bread dough. She makes a pizza that is so awesome. Ok, I'm getting too excited. Wheat crust, pesto for sauce, onions, green peppers, red peppers, and feta cheese on top. Oh Em Gee.

I've never tried a take and bake place and now I never will, thanks for the heads up!
