  • Six Ways to Stay Warm and Reduce the Heating Bill   18 years 12 weeks ago

    Comment No. 23 was correct.
HUMIDITY is the water vapor within a given space. RELATIVE HUMIDITY simply is the amount of moisture in a cubic foot of air at a certain temperature. The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold.
Water is more effective heat transfer agent than air...when you add water to the air it makes it more effective at either heating or cooling your skin.
Since our skin temperature is 74 degrees, and most of us set our thermostats below 74 in the winter to economize, the air in our homes can feel cold. If you raise the humidity in your home, your skin won't evaporate as much moisture, and you'll feel warmer without changing the thermostat.

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   18 years 12 weeks ago

This is why I bake my own pizza! Fast, cheap and GREAT! With pre-cooked sausage or just pepperoni and toppings I can be eating my pizza before any local chain delivers and way before I'd ever get to take-out place!

a website out there, run by someone named Annika (just google her name and pinecone research) and she regularly follows the Pinecone banner ads so you can find them and sign up to join.

I do the surveys too but only make about $10 a month doing them. They just kind of show up in your email box..I've done surveys from dog food to diarrhea medication to kids' snack foods. They always follow up with a link asking permission to send you a new product to try out..if that is what the survey happens to b on (cause you also do surveys on products that haven't come out yet and have to swear on your mother's grave you won't reveal what you've seen to anyone). I've never actually gotten a product to try out for real though. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has?

  • How Not To Freeze For Nearly Free   18 years 12 weeks ago

It's paid for itself many times over. I'm usually very busy when home, moving around a lot, hardly ever sit down except when I'm working (I do work from home as a transcriber 5 days a week from 2-11 p.m.). I do wear sweat suits, heavy socks and slippers most of the time in my Ohio winters. And dumb as it sounds, I find it helps tremendously when I'm cold to the bone (rarely) to just get out in the kitchen and run some hot soapy water and get busy cleaning and picking up the house a bit. I warm up in no time. Then I get the other extreme, oh those midlife hormones, ha-ha.

Let's rethink. The drive on the Falcon is famous for being both fast and cludgy. I guess when you go with the lowest bidding mechanic, you might be able to expect cludgy performance.

Besides, the Empire is realizing all the benefits of mergers. Mass production, economics of scale, universalization. Since they are very poorly developed, character wise, we have on the Jedis word that they are evil. You say rebel, I say terrorist.

  • Let things go   18 years 12 weeks ago

As a bible believer (and a "right divider" of scripture, see II Timothy 2:15), I understand finally after many years that we are not guaranteed anything in the way of physical comforts and happiness in our personal lives on this earth. What you definitely CAN have is understanding that you already have "spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ," Ephesians 1:3, a great comfort to me on days when absolutely nothing goes right. Another reminder to me is that I'm to give "thanks ALWAYS for ALL things," Ephesians 5:20 - try that one on for size, but what a good character builder. Christians these days should be far more familiar with the model Christian, the apostle Paul. He says "if any would not work, he should he eat," II Thessalonians 3:10, among other priceless things.

  • The Pros and Cons of Dollar-Cost Averaging   18 years 12 weeks ago

    @Kevin

The circumstances where this decision comes into play are not that uncommon at all. It's applicable to anyone who gets an annual bonus they can chose to invest, a tax refund they don't need to use immediately to pay off debt, or a 401(k) rollover, for example.

  • The Pros and Cons of Dollar-Cost Averaging   18 years 12 weeks ago

I'm not sure that invest-as-you-go is truly the same thing as DCA, which to me implies intentionally NOT investing money you have to invest RIGHT NOW but rather spreading the investment of a given sum over time as a way to (theoretically) reduce risk. If you invest your savings as soon as they accumulate, you're still doing lump sum investing--it's just smaller lumps.

Husband and I talked this through last year w/r/t our IRAs, and I thought it through came to the conclusion that over the long run on average you'll do better with lump sum than with DCA. I then discovered that the weight of expert opinion and historical data was on my side.

  • Bush's economic stimulus package; What will you get back?   18 years 12 weeks ago

So I am currently a full time college student, working approx 35 hours a week, I brought in 14,000 last year. My question, since my mom is still technically supporting me, legally. Will i get anything? or since she can still claim me on her taxes as supporting me, does she get it all and i get nothing? Just want to be clear.

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   18 years 12 weeks ago

    2 things:

My biggest gripe is cost; they don’t have the same overheads as any other pizza chain and yet the pizzas cost the same, if not more

Price has nothing to do with overheads. It has everything to do with maximising profit by charging what the market will bear. As an "ad man with inside knowledge", you could be expected to know that

    19. Repeat steps 5 though 18 for the next HOUR.
    20. Form a protest gang with fellow hungry, pissed off phone order customers.

Er, wouldn't you have wanted to start asking them after 10 minutes or so?

  • The Pros and Cons of Dollar-Cost Averaging   18 years 12 weeks ago

The DCA vs. lump sum debates always seem a little silly to me because it's very rare to find someone who acquires a fortune overnight and needs to decide whether to buy immediately or use DCA. I guess if you won the lottery or inherited a fortune you'd have this dilemma. But most people are saving part of their monthly salary and so have a relatively small amount to invest every month. In this case lump sum isn't even an option; it comes down to DCA vs. making a market timing decision every month. A lot has been written about how DCA is the better of those two choices.

On balance, I do think the complex analyses supporting lump sum investments are valid, so if I ever do win the lottery or inherit a fortune I'll make a big lump sum buy.

  • Blogs are Not Second Class   18 years 12 weeks ago

    Nicely said, Linsey.

There's a distinction between professional and personal blogs that less blog-savvy folks may not make. Today's probloggers are like yesterday's newspaper columnists, but with direct interaction with readers. And that makes blogging (the medium) way more interesting than newspaper could ever be.

I can sorta - on a lower scale - relate on the grooming issue. In fact, I recently wondered - what with all of the primping & preening even us average guys do these days - if all men are turning metrosexual...

Seriously tho, the car issue is a toughie, but our solution to this has been simple. My wife & I have never purchased a car that we couldn't simply buy outright. No payments, no loans, no exceptions - and we've never bought (as a couple) a used car. However, we're very practical people, choosing cars that're often much smaller and lower-priced than any of our friends would consider. (Don't even get me started on those absurd & overblown SUVs that everyone thinks are a 'must have' for their family.) Also we're pretty meticulous about our car upkeep so they'll retain as much of their trade-in value as possible. And lastly, we resist the urge to trade up frequently - in over 11 years, we've purchased only 3 cars - both of our current vehicles are over 4 years old.

i get 5$ flat fee per survey, not including the household surveys which they don't pay you for (maybe a 3:2 ratio household to paid), but which increase the chances of getting a paid survey

  • Six Ways to Stay Warm and Reduce the Heating Bill   18 years 12 weeks ago

Hi folks People that mentioned using ceiling fans to push heat back down are on the same track, but I have yet to note anyone that mentioned running their furnace fans continuously (those that use forced air heat, anyway). I was very surprised when I tried it on the advice of my retired neighbour, who used to be a burner mechanic for a major Atlantic Canada heating oil distributer. No cold spots in the house and the burner actually runs *less*. So much less that we leave the thermostat set at 70F/20C day and night all winter long, and are still saving money. We can now get by for about 300.00/month - about 2/3 what most of my neighbours pay. We are very well insulated, too. We're the last house on the street to melt the snow off of our roof, so that doesn't hurt. One caveat, though. The third horsepower fan motors are not really up to the task. They run a little hot, so have to cool down for about 15 minutes before they will restart after a power outage. They actually are fine for continuous run and last a proper lifetime - it's just in the case of the furnace losing power. If the motor is too hot, the excitor circuit (which starts it) drops out on an internal limiter until the thing cools down a bit. Like I said, about 15 minutes. But spending $30.00 more (i.e. $110.00 vs. $80.00) gets you a 1/2 horsepower motor that won't kick out its starter circuit. Why does it matter, you ask, if it doesn't actually affect the life of the motor (and doesn't even suck any more current)? Because when the power comes back on, there can be a call for heat (if the power outage hits just about when the thermostat was going to kick in the burner anyway - if it's a power outage longer than 15 minutes, then it doesn't matter), and even with a burner limiter, you don't really want it running with the circulatory fan unable to start. Can you say cracked firebox?

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   18 years 12 weeks ago

I've never had a problem with my local Papa Murphy's. Of course I've never tried to order by phone either. I'm usually in and out in under five minutes on a busy day, so who needs to call ahead?

  • a 3-course meal...from garbage.   18 years 12 weeks ago

Freeganism isn't helping anyone... Well, anyone but the people being cheap and consuming what people eat in the food courts for free. Just because they wait til the food gets thrown out does not make them anyless of a consumer than the average person. Why not go earlier to that same business and purchase the goods while they're still "good...?" I don't agree with wastig food, but there have to be better ways than becoming scavengers and not paying for someone's hard work. If everyone did that, there would be no stores to loot from, and Freeganism would not exist. If it is Altruism people are seeking, then why not spend a little more time fighting for the poor that can not afford these left-overs in their intended restaurants instead of being knee high in the filth of their own greed for a life that is neither beneficial or respectible. Freeganism is just another way of weaning off of society while damning its nature...

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   18 years 12 weeks ago

Sorry you had such a horrible time but all of our Murphy's around here are great. Their prices beat every local "hot" pizza chain by a mile and they always have our phone orders ready in 15 minutes. Might be the manager and lack of employee training. But as for me and my dollar, when buying pizza, will be spent on papa murphy's.

    Friendly reminder...

The market of '29 did not recover until 1954

Now... Just to save some time, here's the argument against this problem.

IMHO, the article which sounds believable, is not.  The very arguments and assumptions made in January, are already being challenged by the current market.

  • Bridging The Gap From Dining Out To Eating In   18 years 12 weeks ago

I really enjoyed this article. For December, we hit 23% of our income going to dining out. TWENTY-THREE PERCENT!! Needless to say, that was a New Years goal. So far, we have not ate out at all in Feb., and only spent $47 in January. Our secret has been to eat a lot of veggies, and we have had some (and some not so much) success with bulk cooking and freezing meal size packages. Thanks again for a great article.
