I tend to spend more when I'm at the extreme of any emotion - sadness all the way up to excitement. If I'm "caught up" in an idea, I run with it, no matter what I'm feeling.
Yeah Jack, I know, most of these options are a bit professional. I know I don't have the experience for the best ones. I really think that WWOOFing is a great option for people who are 'on the road' and on a budget though. Imagine what two weeks expense free would do for the backpacker's or hobo's budget! And, if you are already in the country, the cost of getting to the farm would be minimal.
Myshca, I know this is probably frowned upon, but many of the Peace Corps volunteers I have talked to mention other sources of income that the pursued in their free time. Teaching English lessons is perhaps the most obvious.
Your insurance should pay for the bills then go after the other insurance of the at fault party, providing you had full coverage. I have been in 2 not at fault accidents and both times either the other insurance or mine paid.
It is a long one. The last I checked though, they paid living stipends and six grand per person (or something like that) at the end of your completed commitment. Since we have other resources rolling in and wouldn't need to use them while we did the Peace Corps thing, we would actually be saving more. However, it's true most don't have the flexibility. At least at our age. I'm definitely planning on setting aside some time this afternoon over hot tea and soup to check out some of the ones you recommended in more detail. Thanks again.
What's really unfair about this whole thing is that you have to make a certain amount of money to qualify. In my position, I was a stay at home mother last year (5 kids), Now recently a single mother with all 5 kids living with me, I cannot qualify for the rebate (which would be really helpful at this point) because I did not work last year. Whats even more unfair is that the father of my 3 youngest children will be getting a big fat rebate check for him and the kids that live 1500 miles away from him with me and I most likely will not see a dime of it.
O.K so i'm happy if i get a rebate back me and my husband we have had a bad year put ourselves in debt and need to get out that money will help. My husband lost his job and things have been rough. Sometimes i dont' understand how people who make $75,000 a year can complain. So u may or may not pay more taxes boo hoo come to my world me and my husband make 20,000 a year and we have what we can get and thats it. I'm glad about the rebate it would be so much better if taxs in general were lowered. I Guess like they say money makes the world go round because thats whate every American has to have.
Reich is a central command economist that believes the heavy hand of government is needed to make things right. Where is it written that government bureaucrats are smarter than anyone else?
The men that wrote the Constitution sought to limit governmental intrusion in an individual's life. An ideal that isn't cherished anymore. I, for one, resist the idea of others telling me what to do.
Capitalism isn't perfect but it's far superior to any idea of a central controlled economy. .
In order for Capitalism to work properly, there must be absolute transparency. For example, products and produce should be clearly marked as to origin. Products are but the labeling could be larger, more prominent. Produce, by and large, is not. If my potatoes are being imported from somewhere in the world that has no controls on pesticides, I'd like to know that. It would cause me, and others I suspect, not to buy those potatoes.
When you think of it, Capitalism is a perfect democracy where every dollar is a vote
Hey David, thanks for this post - exactly what I've been thinking about lately. I had no idea an organization like ArtCorps even existed. Hope they're interested in musicians, too... -- Mike
A melon baller does a better job of coring an apple (slice in half first), and is much less dangerous than using a knife. I've cut myself with apple corers and knives doing this more than once. (Yes, I'm a klutz.)
I also use my Chinese strainer as a server for pasta salad and fruit salad, especially at potlucks. Things don't slip off it as easily as a slotted metal spoon, you get more in one swoop, and you don't overwhelm your plate with juiciness. It works great.
Mary, I agree that a summer with Volunteers for Peace would be a great opportunity for your college bound daughter. I spent a summer working on a project in the Czech Republic arranged through VFP after I graduated from High School and it was a great experience. I was able to apply for local service grants that ended paying for all of my registration and travel expenses as well!
Myshca, I agree the Peace Corps is a great option for a lot of people. I have met and known a lot of volunteers and they all seem to have had great experiences. I think the major drawback isthat it is kind of a large commitment for most people though.
What a refreshing contrast to the list of summer camps for college bound students that was published yesterday in the New York Times. I think my daughter would learn a lot more working with Volunteers for Peace than she would at a $5000 or up summer camp!
I am glad to find this discussion as my office is about to switch from paper to ceramic. I was in the office "kitchen" this morning watching somebody dumping about a teaspoon of dish soap into their mug and then use necessary 1/2 gallon of water to get that much soap out, and I of course thought of all the extra soap and extra water we will be using.
Doing a complete analysis of this situation is mind boggling. However, it is important to note that just because you are using ceramic, you could still be causing quite an impact. Just in a different area. I think for our office, it would be best if they used a less concentrated dish soap.
Perfect timing. I am sad - I got fired abruptly yesterday afternoon, after working less than a month. My boss said I was making too many mistakes. I was her FOURTH secretary - since October! I sense a pattern...
Great reminder not to spend when I'm sad, cause I sure am sad.
I know there are people out there that believe if you make more, you should have to pay more. I agree, and I would pay more even if I was in the same tax bracket as the lowest income earners. (That's how percentages work!) Of course, that's not the case. For some reason, I must pay a higher percentage of my earnings in taxes. But it doesn't stop there! I also get to pay the lovely AMT. Oh ... but let's see if I can be penalized one more time! Why don't we give some of my tax dollars to total strangers and ask them to use it as 'spending money'. The more frivilous, the better! Of course, I shouldn't be able to get any of this spending money for myself, because I make barely more than the max. (I heard there no longer was a max, but that's clearly not true.) Forget the fact that I might have a million kids to support. If I make one penny over the max, my kids no longer count.
I share my situation, because I don't believe most people who are eligible have considered how unfair this is to higher income earners.

Really funny, yet informative post.
BINGO. I can trace each of my budget busting purchases to feeling frustrated or sad.
I just read on CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/08/economic.stimulus/index.html)
that this "rebate" we're getting is actually a loan. The rebate (or most of it) will be deducted from next year's tax refund.
If I'd wanted a loan, I'd've asked for one.
I opened and played with all my toys. A part of me wishes I hadn't because they'd be worth a fortune now!

Ooooo! This article is like candy! Thank you so much. I can't wait to explore all these different list-makers.

I wasn't aware of the majority of these resources for cheap travels. Now, if they only started one for restless hobo's like me, that'd be great :)

Here is a great article I found on the subject:

what a fantastic resource! thanks for it.
