  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 2 weeks ago

Haven't had cable since 2000 and don't miss it. I use free Hulu, Netflix and a great local library for TV and movies. I generally watch sports with friends or at a bar.

It wasn't originally to save money; in 2000 I moved into a new apartment but postponed getting cable so I could concentrate on finishing my dissertation. A few months later I had my degree but also realized I didn't miss cable all that much. Now that I look back and realize just how much money I've saved over eleven years, I wonder why I ever had cable in grad school at all.

    Right.

One exception would be when you want your credit limit raised. If that's your goal, getting your credit used up near 50% of your available credit (and then paying it off) will make the bank think you need a higher limit. I describe the procedure here:

  • 4 Cheap and Easy Homemade Mosquito Repellents   15 years 2 weeks ago

Folks - If vanilla worked, don't you think the would be well known? There are people that spend lots of time studying how to keep the bugs away. Lemon and eucalyptus oil?

Here is the thing. If You were going into an area with endemic malaria what would you use? DEET or vanilla?

  • 6 Things You Can Look Forward to When You Have Money   15 years 2 weeks ago

I think the main advantage would be able to do the things you want to do...like travel, work less, spend more time with the family, etc. At the end of the day, we all want to be happy no matter how much money we have. Don't take money for granted...make sure you enjoy yourself.

I'm glad you have a reference for your remarks on how DEET might be dangerous to some people when ingested in large quantities or used in a manner grossly different from what the label on the product directs.

But what about these other remedies? (By virtue of being matter, they technically are also mixtures of 'chemicals'.) Do you have some (non-anecdotal) references on their effectiveness as mosquito repellents? Maybe people placing their scented arms into a box full of mosquitoes got a certain percentage fewer bites? Did someone find these plant chemicals to work by diverting mosquitoes at long distances or short? (Mosquitoes use very different cues for locating an animal's general area than they do for homing in on a likely bite site.)

  • Seven Lessons Learned from Working Retail   15 years 3 weeks ago

I work in retail full time in the UK, and I hate it! My boss is an idiot who is arrogant and thinks every one but HIM is the problem when he is. The Assistant Manager is too paranoid that everyone is talking about him (when we are) but he snaps over the stupidest comments or things. We get no praise for hard work, I come home feeling so exhausted that my social life is dead, I don't have one anymore. My dream job is out of reach as Retail is beneath better employers when they read it on a CV. My holiday ends soon and I'm dreading going back to work, actually dreading it! My advice, avoid retail!

  • 5 Tips for Remembering Names   15 years 3 weeks ago

In the off chance that you actually do forget someone's name, the best way to circumvent those awkward moments when it's pretty obvious you don't remember is to simply be honest and tell the other person that you're sorry, but you've forgotten their name. Just make sure to remember it the second time around, there's really no getting around this a second time.

  • 9 Items City-Dwelling Dudes Should Keep in Their Bags   15 years 3 weeks ago

@Raina The key to cutting down on the weight is to only take small quantities of items. I also bring cologne and hairspray in my bag, but I have them in these tiny spray-bottles (the hairspray is non-aerosol). Similarly, I have a mini-kleenex package, and I use a travel-size case for my tylenol. All together, my "just-in-case" items only take up one small pocket in my bag.

Finally, this list would be very incomplete without a pocket-knife or multi-tool.

I don't pay for cable and never have. I use Netflix and Hulu. Netflix is cheaper and Hulu is free! I like your website on Facebook.

I have satellite and if my mother didn't live with me, I would dump it. I could be happy with just the local channels and watching shows on the Internet.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 3 weeks ago

I don't. I have roku and netflix... but I am considering cable... even just basic, because the reception on my antenna is so bad.

  • Homemade Peanut Butter: Recipe and Cost Comparison   15 years 3 weeks ago

It may not be fair to compare homemade to jarred, but it is fair to compare it to the kind you have ground for you in the store. You could also buy organic peanuts, and it is a whole lot cheaper than purchasing organic peanut butter.

  • How to Buy Like a Pro at Country Auctions   15 years 3 weeks ago

I used to attend some musical instrument auctions and found an important tip. If you don't know what the value of an object should be you can get a good idea by watching the professionals, the dealers buying at wholesale. Dealers buy at auctions. They know what the retail values are. They cannot afford to spend more than about 1/2 of their resale estimate. So, watch the dealers. When they stop bidding you know that is likely about 1/2 retail cost. How do you know who are the dealers? They do not want you to know who they are and what they are doing because they would rather you buy that widget you want from them, not the auction house. Therefore they all sit or stand near the back of the audience out of sight of the other buyers. Also, the auctioneer and crew knows who they are. You have to wave a large number, but the dealers will only make subtle gestures to make their bid without getting unwanted notice. Just going to an auction to watch all these dynamics is interesting in itself.

  • How to find the cheapest college textbooks   15 years 3 weeks ago

I can hardly believe what I'm reading. Not only did this post provide me with some GREAT resources (it was getting really tiring trying to find a comprehensive search engine so I didn't have to look twenty different places to find the best deal), but the comments also provided some great ideas too. When I completed my bachelor's the online thing was only really just starting to blossom. Now that I'm going back to do my master's I don't have a lot of money or time to be doing all kinds of research to find a book. Now I can knock out two birds with one stone. Awesome! So glad I found this post.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Pay For Cable TV?   15 years 3 weeks ago

Kind of. I use a combination of hulu and "basic limited cable." What most people don't know is that all cable companies (satellite companies are excluded) are federally mandated to offer a "basic limited cable" package for $10/mo. So we pay $10 for cable and watch everything else on hulu. We obviously don't get the full lineup of cable channels for that cheap, but we get enough to get by.

  • Building a Credit History   15 years 3 weeks ago

I just wanted to comment on this statement as some people may be wondering what the actual limit should be: "Plenty of Available Credit
If your cards are maxed out, it hurts your credit score. Solution: Don't approach the limits on your cards."

Banks like to see you keeping your credit card debt under 40% of the actual card limit. Of course you can go over that and you won't be penalized, but the point is, try to keep that percentage as low as possible and do it as rarely as possible.

A Venezuelan fellow I knew swore that taking Vitamin B kept the mosquitoes away during an extended trip up the Amazon River. Don't know how healthy or effective that is though.
