  • Coping Mechanisms for a Spender-Saver Relationship   15 years 38 weeks ago

Marriage is new phase of life for couples to learn sharing and caring not only in term of relationship, but also financial matters. I've seen couples who separate their finances, and also couples who combine everything including bank accounts and bills. No matter how, most of them turn up doing well as long as the bonding love is strong.
    Great article!

Hi Jennifer, I love your writing style - your articles are so enjoyable to read. Would it be too basic to say: talk to each other, not only about money, but about everything? Do not be afraid to bring up any subject, it's a good habit to get into early. The worst thing that will happen will be a fight, and of course no marriage survives without a fight once in a while. Good luck to your sis, Barb Friedberg

Isn't generally the case where one spouse just makes all the money, and the other just spend all the money?

I'd have some different type of content during mid day financial love notes!

There is no reason to educate anyone if they read before they sign. What people need to learn is to read before signing.

I see myself as a squirrel. I hide my nuts in different places, forget about them, and run around digging them up when I need them. The ones that remain become big trees that end up helping alot of other squirrels.

  • Best Buy scamming customers with Intranet - UPDATED!   15 years 38 weeks ago

There is another more pricey scam that wal-mart and best buy are conducting in more backward states like Texas where customers are not that IT savey and the state reps care little for ethical service/sales in IT with ADSL service and routers. In Houston and most of east Texas ADSL (internet via standard phone line into an ADSL router/modem) is sold from a comapny and provided via an ADSL router/modem that the customer is instructed to buy if not provided by the ISP. What the ISPs, Best Buy and Wal-mart have NOT been telling customers is that the low grade telephone infrastructure on most homes in this area (most still have ceramic phone post mounts from the 60s/70s with no buffering or protection) and many other southern states where most homes are like this will destroy these modem/routers at some point because of the over delivery of surges and garbage packets from un-buffered and un-protected lines running directly to the equipment from these old posts on the house.
They don't even offer the alternative of a line protector like on and APC or Belkin power and date cable surge protectors. Which I know for a FACT best Buy employees in Wisconsin and Michigan will advise in this same situation in those areas.
I've run into several customers in the Houston area and surrounding communities who have purchased sometimes SIX ADSL routers A YEAR. These things cost at least $90.00 per unit at Wal-mart and Best Buy in these areas and after speaking with EVRY wal-mart and Best Buy location in Huston alone I've found that they can't keep them on the shelves. Speaking with geek Squad employees in Houston I fond that they didn't even KNOW that power surge protectors also had data line protectors on them and most aren't even comp TIA (computer service tech) CERTIFIED!!!!
This is a sick scam ripping off thousands of people in the east Texas area alone.
The customers try to claim the units are defective but since it isn't the units but the service lines that are causing the problem and states like Texas that don't want to hear anything bad about wal-mart are turning the other cheek when the complaints come in and allowing Best buy and wal mart to access the loop hole.

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 38 weeks ago

    Hello Zorcy...

    Thank you so much.

I was a bit worried that my post didn't go through, I see now it probably goes through an approval process.

I actually got the materials to start two more batches of the stuff after work today, and was delighted to find your reply. Even more-so that I am on the right path.

The anxiousness is getting to me, I am on day five or six and can't wait for the final product. That being said... Any recommendations for a more active / faster / higher ABV producing yeast? I'm in kind of a rural area of Florida, and the closest brewers' store is a good hour away. So the internet will probably be my means of purchase.

And sure enough, I walk into the house with 20 lbs of sugar from the local 'superstore' and the news channel's top story is how Wal-Mart is starting to track buying trends by customers... With only buying sugar and yeast from them in the past few months, I giggled a little bit.

Again, thank you so much. I can't express how much your advice has been appreciated. I've called a few brewers' stores looking for some advice, but don't get too much politeness out of them...

Oh man. I would be so annoyed at my boyfriend if he wrote me "financial love notes" such as these ones. They come across as very condescending, to me. I'd prefer we have a conversation up front: "Honey, I checked our numbers again and we are spending more than we have room for in the budget. New rule on the table for discussion: don't spend more than $100 without the other's input. What do you think?" Or: "I have an extra $40 this week, want to go out to dinner?" He doesn't need to explain how he has an extra $40. I trust him to follow the budget we set together.

    An Elephant...
Sometimes I make a lot of noise about it,
Sometimes I run away from it,
Sometimes I just stand there and stare at it,
And sometimes I just throw it over my shoulder.
It took me a while and I lost a tusk along the way, but now I'm bigger than it

OK, let's see if this analogy works:
I am like a leopard. I work hard and fast to get the money, then I may play with it a little, splurging on a few things - better-than-usual shampoo, maybe order a pizza instead of making it myself, etc. Then, I slowly pick away at the rest - paying bills, buying what my family needs, saving some for later...

There are so many great ideas for improving one's personal financial situation. But that's just it. A lot of those tips are for "one." Jennifer, you're addressing a topic that is far too infrequently discussed or studied: finances in relationships. Thanks!

I particularly like your "Working toward a common goal" suggestion. I think if both partners would agree to written down goals that are then posted where they can be seen by both partners regularly, it would make it a lot easier to see finances as a team effort rather than a competition or 1 vs 1 match.

  • Gluten-Free, Carb-Free Noodles   15 years 38 weeks ago

I also take slight issue with the passage and comments being made about the Atkins Diet. The diet doesn't advocate "eliminating carbs completely," in fact, as an Atkins follower in the Ongoing Weight Loss stage, I can have as many as 50 carbs a day and still lose weight. I think the problem most people have is that they view the diet as a license to go ahead and eat a ton of meat, cheese and eggs all the time, when in fact, the "New Diet Revolution" and the more recent "New Atkins for the New You" put a lot of stress on eating plenty of vegetables (3/4 of your daily carb intake), as they are both rich in fiber and brain-fueling carbs. I would hope our author does a little more research next time before writing so condescendingly about a diet that has helped millions around the world achieve previously unrealized health goals. Also, one more thing: if you base a diet around not eating a bunch of sugar, bread and pasta, lose 50 pounds on that diet, then start eating a bunch of sugar, bread and pasta once you@ve reached your goal, OF COURSE YOU'RE GOING TO GAIN THE WEIGHT BACK. You keep it off by not going back to terrible habits!

  • 4 Deadly Mistakes You Must Avoid When Pursuing Your Dreams   15 years 38 weeks ago

Really loved this article. Sometimes all of these ideas are in the back of your mind, but they get lost in everything else that's going on. When you really take the time to think mindfully about your dreams and goals you become aware of their importance, which makes you realize what actions you need to take in order to accomplish them. I especially like how you said listen to your heart, because as I recently discovered, when you're truly happy it radiates throughout everything you do. Thanks for bringing my goals back to my attention today!

Sounds perfect! If you have enough time, make several batches. Bakers yeast is peter out at the end. You may not see many bubbles as it finishes up. Wait for it to start to clear, then pull off the clear liquid, leave the yeast in the bottom inch. So long as the yeast is active, it will stir itself up. The top crust is from HIGH activity. It slows down after that. Usually, for sugar washes, you don't see the foam very much. I would say everything is on schedule and working fine.

  • Cut-Rate Condiments: Homemade Mayo   15 years 39 weeks ago

I have been making my own mayo for 8 years now. I use a blender recipe that is much faster and easier to clean up. We make a double batch and immediately use half of that to make our own ranch-style salad dressing. I have also made a miracle whip substitute, it is not difficult, but takes longer and requires some cooking.

  • Is Social Security Just A Grand Ponzi Scheme?   15 years 39 weeks ago

Brilliant. So Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme because it's not. Only a liberal can twist such non-sense. So what if the administrators call it a pay go insurance system. I'm sure Madoff called his scheme an "investment". Does that make it so?

  • An Introduction to Venture Capital   15 years 39 weeks ago

I think what's lacking here is a little criticism concerning the present attitude of VC & PE funds. Because the conditions offered today differ so much to what was common before the crisis and carry such aggressive demands that is become nigh impossible to access funding via these means.

However, rescue is at hand; under the provision that a start-up with a viable project is able to garner an international outlook.

Specifically, a firm called Esolve, with their Esolve Nano unit, is very well placed to offer excellent funding conditions. Check them out !
