why is it that any criticism of the wealthy is always immediately followed by charges of jealousy and resentment? it couldn't possibly have anything to do with the immorality of greed, and the recklessness of unbridled materialism, could it? or perhaps the abuses of people who amass their fortunes on the backs of the working poor, without ever doing a hard days work themselves? greed is a destructive and immoral force, it's a disease, and it is doing more to ruin this world of ours than to benefit it with such transitory and rather dubious benefits as "jobs" for us ungrateful members of the working class. the earth provides our sustenance, not the wealthy, though they do love to take credit for it. all the wealthy do is siphon off the fruits of our labors to live in their own disgusting and self-absorbed worlds of luxury. but what they do affects everyone, no one acts out their lives within a bubble, so it is everyone's consequences what they choose to do with their wealth.
Nice article. I'm the President/CEO of a chamber of commerce on the north side of Chicago. Sometimes there's more help available in your own backyard than you might realize, and this list is a helpful reminder of that.
At the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce, we work with existing businesses in the neighborhood putting on networking events and educational workshops, advocating on behalf of the businesses when they run into issues with the City or State, and marketing/promoting local businesses.
Practically every city in the country has a local chamber of commerce, and they're usually great organizations to help get connected with the local business community and potential mentors. Additionally, I'd suggest people look into local SBDCs (Small Business Development Centers), which also organize workshops for new businesses.
Minimum wage is not very much because it's essentially for kids. I once worked for minimum wage, when I was 15-18. I also once breast fed. Eventually I put down the teat and started using a cup. Now I make much much more than minimum wage, and that was by design, not luck.
If you want to improve your life, there are steps that you need to take. Living in the USA, it's a pretty even playing field. You work hard, you'll move up. But that means having to "think" before you act. Don't be having kids you can't afford, buying crap you can't afford, and running up debt.
Wow. I've used Netspend for about 6 years now. I've never had any problems. A little disheartening to hear your story, I guess since then they've come up with new methods of courting customers. I use it for my kids, with a regularly scheduled amount loaded for pocket money purposes, etc. They charge me a flat fee of $9.95 per month for usage, but other than that, nothing else. I've never really had to use their customer service, so I can't speak on it, although I do know that they outsource to Asia. With other companies, I KNOW how frustrating that can be.
I'm really careful with information that I share online. Everything these days is becoming more and more linked, and then sharing info between companies. Even Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, if you notice are pairing up with practically everyone. Youtube and Google, for example. There's always the option of "sharing" your posted comments from almost every forum. If you think about all the intimate info that your Facebook has about you, and connect that with the info Gmail collects (search history, etc.) they have all they'll ever need to know. I believe come of this information is often-times sold for marketing purposes. This is how they may deduce that a debit card may fit your lifestyle. Pretty scary.
Please READ people. If you read the documents that come from Visa and MC along with your new debit card, it clearly states NEVER to use your card as DEBIT in checkout stands. Your PIN gets recorded on a visible report on the Grocery, Gas Station (wherever) system. So if you want your info stolen. Use DEBIT
I too thought it was a great deal and a good product, I had a friend of mine who had his for over 2 years get disconnected from using the service because they said he used it too much and violated the Terms of Service agreement. So that being said I suppose there is a limit to how much you can use it... They will NOT investigate anything to find out how it was used, etc. They just terminate and say "Sorry" This was a great way to communicate cheaply while he had it, but there is no way to really determine how much was used in terms of minutes as they won't assist in anyway to do an investigation. The way I see it that seems like an terrible way to treat a customer of 2 years! I have one and haven't used it very much but will no longer waste my time with MagicJack...
Philip Brewer and Zorcy, I cannot express how shocked I am at your patience and dedication to your thread. Over 2-3 days, I have been through the majority of the nearly 600 posts on here, and just can't get over how helpful and insightful you are to this discussion. You must both have an amazing love for the art, and I hope this is something I can learn and pass along to future generations of my family and friends.
But not the distilling part of course ;)
If I may;
Three days ago I began my first fermentation process with the recipe noted in this article. I am using a cleaned / sterilized five gallon plastic water bottle for the process, which has a balloon rubber-banded atop the opening with a few needle pricks in it to let the gas out. I have it in an empty (unplugged) refrigerator in my garage. I figured - or hoped atleast - that this would keep some of the temperature fluctuations down.
The first evening, I followed the recipe exactly, and after being placed in my storage refrigerator, it bubbled nicely and formed almost like a crust of the by-product (?) along the top of the mixture.
The next morning, that said crust is gone. With zero trace of it existing in the first place. After three days, I can still see tons of tiny bubbles breaking on the surface, but that crust has not came back. Currently, it is very, very lightly yellow in color, and when shined upon with a flashlight, you can't see past a few inches into it. So it is pretty cloudy. And again, bubbling like crazy.
I guess my question / concern is should this missing crust be there?
I should probably note;
- I used 2 packets of the baker's yeast
- A meat thermometer in the refrigerator stays right around 85-90 degrees
- Since it is enclosed, it is always dark
- I used three, one gallon containers of distilled drinking water
- I used one, five pound bag of white granulated sugar
Any help would be appreciated. And it (whomever who answers this) doesn't respond quickly, I totally understand. If the mix WAS to be distilled, it isn't needed until the first weekend in October, so there is plenty of time to start over, if need-be. But I am hoping that isn't the case...
In advance, thank you for your time and knowledge...
I just wanted to let you know that if you use Diet Coke instead of regular coke in the brownie receipe you will get moist chewy brownies. You can also do the same thing with cake mixes, I use diet sprite with yellow cake mix and it is really good. Enjoy!
Currently, in our lives is full of false weight loss drugs, which not only seriously effects our health, also impact of our work, as consumers, protecting of our rights is the most important, to use country’s Drugs is our greatest hope. As a member of consumers, I deeply appreciate this. In the recent life, I found a website , all products are verified through the state, not only first-class products and good results. A $100K can go a long way in the South unless you're trying to keep up with the Joneses. It's tough in big metro cities without $100K. That's why I left DC. It's difficult to enjoy the city without money. It's fun for a while. And even that money comes at a cost. The stress associated with working some jobs that pay more is simply not worth it. I rather live more simply than be miserable for a 401K that I won't enjoy for over 30 years.
If you aren't making $70K in DC then you are living check to check because the cost of living is so high. That's assuming you have your own place in a decent neighborhood. Personally, I don't want to be 30 years old with multiple roommates. Also, I value safety. In some of these cities, if you're paying less than a $1,000 in rent then you could be living in a shady neighborhood.
My opinion about Credit cards is they are dangerous. It would be better to have them use a debit card. A parent can set up a checking account just for teaching the child . It can be used to purchase, clothes, shoes, snacks and sports fees, etc. The child can sit down with the parent and balance that checkbook.
Older children should also do whatever is possible to work to pay for most, if not all, of their own expenses.
I save like a little mother bird. I fly around frantically collecting twigs to build a large bird's nest to protect my future (retirement and children). The bigger the nest, the better and safer.
I dont buy your argument when our tax money is being utilized by the banks to help home owners. What you said would be true only if they didnt get any TARP money and it only decision on the terms. But here, they get our tax money, utilize for their heafty bonuses and still have the terms according to their will. Also this mess is caused by these greedy people where they gave out loan to those who could not afford loan and created a mess where people like us who are able to pay and be by the rules are most sufferer. Is this not frustrating when you are sticking by the rules?
My sister in law owns one of the most successful boutique catering companies in Los Angeles, squash blossoms are on her master menu list, and everyone loves them once they try them!
Our Chamber of Commerce has been so helpful. We did have to pay for membership, but it's been totally worth it, just for the networking possibilites alone.
I am a kangaroo. Bouncing from blog to blog, tucking away valuable insights in my pouch...hoping those insights will grow into something special one day as I apply what I learn.
I am definitely a squirrel, hoarding money away, and wanting to keep it all to myself. I'd like to think of it like a squirrel saving for the long winter, and I get greedy and always worry that there won't be enough.
Gator 73,
Was it still sweet? If yes, then you yeast may be a low octaine type. If it was dry, then you could have added more sugar to turn into alcohol. Check your starting gravity and see what your potential % would have been. The other possibility, is that the flavour of the coolade, covered the alcy taste. That would be great! Then you can jack it up to about 20% and just taste it.
For the coolade you added, when you leave ice behind, its clear. That means all the coolade came over with the alcohol, and will be concentrated, too. That is like taking a pack of coolade, 1 cup of water and a cup of sugar. It wont taste like you expected. If you use a single pack in 2 gallons with enough sugar to have some left over for sweetness, they you ice filter it in the spinner, you would want to keep doing it till you have 2 quarts left. That would take a couple times freezing. Keep jacking it till you get what you expected, but plan ahead for what you want.
This is a fantastic post and somewhat of a reality check as well, I have found that just because something is your passion doesnt mean that the road to achieving your dreams will be smooth, in fact, the job of passion is to keep you going when the road gets rough, you will quickly discover if something is a true passion for you when you are faced with obstacles, if you scale the obstacles then you are truly passionate, if you give up at the hurdle then maybe it was never a passion. Achieving yourr dreams will take hard work and determination and like you rightly said there are no shortcuts to success. Great post!
Bigger government and more government regulation, higher taxes, socialized health care... all are bad for small business which is the backbone of the American economy. I can't see the economy improving much at all.

I would sit down to get a $5000 loan if I thought my Red Ferrarri held enough sentimental value.
This is such an important topic!
