  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 40 weeks ago

    zorcy,
i didnt get back here in time to see your advisement. so i added the coolade in the begining with no adverse sideeffects throut fremintation or freezing, all went well, tho some did settle wich is fine cause it left a slight grape taste after i ran the "slushy" through a centrafuge..salad spinner... tho, i must add i was quite dissapointed of the ammount of alcahol there was, but i didnt think there was going to be alot ,its just that it wasnt very strong...to me... i am an avid drinker, so that may play a part in it too, so on my next batch i will go ahead and try to purchace a stainless pressure cooker and some copper tubing and try that route, i use and electric stove, so that minimizes the risk of explosion due to gasss., aslo i must add that i didnt know what to expect going into this, where as i have never made, nor tasted shine,..

  • Long Hours and Other Employer Demands   15 years 40 weeks ago

I agree, although I'm sure most bosses don't. (If you can get your work done in 6 hours, you obviously need more work.)

I find that I'm much more productive, now that I don't have a boss. But I'm only productive at doing the stuff I want to do. I'm sometimes so foolish as to put tasks that I don't really want to do on my to-do list. When I do that, it turns out I'm just as good at procrastinating as I ever was as an employee.

One key to being productive over the course of a full day is to have several different kinds of work. No one can be maximally productive at the same thing for 8 hours a day, day after day. I think that's part of the reason that nurses can be productive over the course of a very long shift—what they're actually doing is different every minute. When I was a software engineer I usually had lots of different kinds of work—writing code, writing documents, testing, fixing bugs, designing new stuff. My productive always deteriorated, though, when some one specific task became super urgent and they didn't want me "wasting my time" doing any of that other stuff. (Try and explain to a boss, though....)

During a time of incredible unemployment and stagnant wages, it may be insensitive to other's hardships to suggest they need to tighten already constrictive belts.

  • Long Hours and Other Employer Demands   15 years 40 weeks ago

and that was Brewer's articles! Not Brewster's. I must be dreaming of brewing beer. ha!

  • Long Hours and Other Employer Demands   15 years 40 weeks ago

Back in college, one of my professors (a research scientist) told me that people who work more than 8 hrs consistently are likely inefficient. I've found that to be true. In all honesty, I think most of us (save nurses, factory workers, etc. who are required for various reasons to go-go-go) don't really even need a full 8 hrs to get our work done. If we worked more efficiently and stopped screwing around (yanno, like reading Brewster's articles on Wise Bread ;-), we could get our work done in much less than 8 hrs most days.

Also, for the salaried individual, longer hours don't neccessarily equate an increase in income, making all those long hours even more pointless.

Some people, meaning family, expect money. And ask for it specifically. For Christmas too. It sickens me.

  • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, By the Month   15 years 40 weeks ago

Scientifically, tomatoes are classified as a fruit, but since they don't contain the sweet flavor of most fruits and are typically used in savory dishes, they're legally classified as a vegetable.

  • The First Payday: Helping Your Teen Understand Money   15 years 40 weeks ago

These are some good tips to start a dialogue about personal finance between new income earning teens and parents. However, it's more ideal to start teaching some of these core principles of money management (e.g. savings) at a younger age.

  • 8 Great Businesses Ideas You Can Start Today   15 years 40 weeks ago

Re: environmental consulting - yes, thank you. That's my actual (traditional) career, and it looks very strange under a headline like this one. To be fair, though, most people aren't remotely qualified to just go out and start up a farm, either.

  • Ask the Readers: Camp Much? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 40 weeks ago

  • Paying for Packaging: It's Time to Stop   15 years 40 weeks ago

Hamburger Helper is a great example. We make a version we enjoy just as much (if not more than) the boxed stuff. Just egg noodles, hamburger, and various spices and seasoning!

Sure it may seem like a lot more money at first with the spices and seasonings costing so much, but if you think about it you get a lot of uses out of those spices and can use them for many different meals. Same goes for many different things.

  • 6 False Assumptions About Debt-Free Living   15 years 40 weeks ago

People need to get realistic about money and debt. The economy has suffered due to too much debt. And I agree with you: it is okay to live debt-free. When did it become a social faux pas to live within one's means? We need to teach our children from a young age how to manage money. There seems to be few people able to do the teaching however.

  • 13 Natural and Easy Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar   15 years 40 weeks ago

Great article, and very helpful to me. I have a diabetic husband that goes through the ups and downs everyday. He is usually good at controlling the fluctuations in his blood sugar, but sometimes it does get away from him. I knew alot of the information you presented, because I am always studying diabetes and trying to prevent myself from becoming one since it runs like crazy all over my family, but I like the way you presented it. And I actually did learn a couple new things. Thanks.

  • 8 Great Businesses Ideas You Can Start Today   15 years 40 weeks ago

Most of these seem to be about doing something you enjoy rather than actually being an owner of a business with passive income. If your profit is based on your personal labor of tending to another's dog, making that craft, baking those cookies, etc... then in today's world that probably won't be a big return on investment of your time. You'd have to add personal satisfaction from doing that labor to decide if it is worth it. If you can outsource the repeatable labor to people ARE content to just do the simple labor then that frees up your time for more creativity. That is how to start a business and scale it.

We should all try to find our personal 'labor of love' in this life and if you are happy growing organic vegetables to sell locally at a very modest gain versus your time and labor then great. Just make sure you don't do something labor intensive like that with the goal of making a killing, because it's not very scalable. Find your happy, but make sure you are honest with yourself on WHY you are doing it.

internet marketing seems to keep paying the bills, the only problem is that it will take a lot of time and hard work before you see any fruits. I am more inclined to the internet for making a living because this is where my skill set lies. That coupled with the fact that i am entreprenueral means that i am for internet marketing and other ways to make a living off the internet. If i was very good with coding and stuff, i would make video game like call of duty and make me a million bucks

Environmental Consultant? Good idea if you have a degree in Environmental Engineering. As much as I love the environment and keep abreast with the latest environmental news and trends, consulting a business to reduce their environmental impact requires more than just a saying "recycle."

Instead of Environmental Consultant, I'd suggest Social Media Marketer. Anyone who is internet savvy can be a Social Media Marketer. It is a fast growing field, but it seems like everyone these days is trying to get their piece of the social media pie, so it will be challenging.

Local farmer? Again, another nice idea that wouldn't work unless you have a lot of green to work with: money and space. I've been unemployed for over a year and started my own garden in my spacious backyard. I even considered doing this very thing, but there simply isn't enough room for me to be able to generate a viable income.

Ironically, pet sitting is something I'm actually giving a try right now. Not only pet sitting, but pet waste removal, dog walking, pet taxi service (to and from the vet), etc. Unfortunately, I'm finding a lot of people are like me- unemployed and at home with their pets. I still hope to gain a few clients to get this thing going though. I'd advise those interested in this venture to take a pet first-aid class and to become a member of Pet Sitters International.

Be there when they fail is a great mantra, however, if they CONTINUE to fail, don't give them the complex that you'll always be there for them.

Then you could have a financially depedent kid for the rest of your life.

No-one who keeps a kosher home would contemplate preparing meat (sausage) and dairy (cheese) together. They must be cooked in separate kitchens and served separately. Referring to your recipe as kosher is deeply offensive to observant Jews.
