  • Ask the Readers: Camp Much? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 39 weeks ago

Our family goes tent camping because it's great to be surrounded by nature and off the grid for just a little while. Bringing two small kids along can make the experience a lot less relaxing -but ultimately, I know that my children are experiencing something that will stay with them. Plus it gets them away from the xbox long enough to use their creativity and explore something truly wild -the FOREST! I blogged about my camping trip this past weekend here: http://marydiamond.com/2010/07/18/back-to-the-woods/ if you want to read more. I think sitting around the campfire late at night is the best part.

My husband and children enjoy camping as a family but don't get out as often as we'd like. We're spoiled by the luxury of our Jayco pop-up camper.

When we're choosing a destination, we look for parks that offer learning activities like guided hikes and science hours for the kids. Devil's Lake State Park, WI, is one of our favorites.

  • Organic Groceries on a Budget   15 years 39 weeks ago

Thanks so much for sharing these helpful money-saving tips with your readers. The Organic Trade Association would just caution people against eliminating entire categories of organic products to save money. Instead, we encourage people to choose organic versions of the products they buy most. Whether that is milk, produce, or personal care products, buying organic will not only help reduce your exposure to harmful synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, but also support a system of agricultural management that is great for the planet.

  • 50 Healthy Foods for Under $1 a Pound   15 years 39 weeks ago

The term "organic" is so loose that foods labeled as such, especially those produced on a large scale (such as those you might buy at Whole Foods) could have been sprayed with chemicals anyway.

  • 50 Healthy Foods for Under $1 a Pound   15 years 39 weeks ago

Good list, except where I live it is impossible to find much of the fresh produce for under $1 a pound, even in season. I used to live in the Washington, D.C. area and groceries are considerably less expensive than where I am now California. I don't think we'd eat much if your rule held for our area, but it's a good idea to have a limit so you recognize a good deal.

  • How to Split Food Expenses With a Significant Other   15 years 39 weeks ago

My food expenses are still mostly separate after a year. I'm vegetarian, and she's a meat eater. I tend to buy a lot more vegetables, obviously, and can't buy so much to store in the freezer, so I have to shop often. Also, I'm very cheap and try to eat through all my food and hate to toss any into the trash. She's not so worried about that, and tosses stuff out if it goes bad. We alternate on buying things like eggs, oil, flour, and other staple items. Also, I don't care if she (or her sister) go through and eat my food, as long as I have enough left over for a couple meals, but the opposite is not true.

I have found that people who are married that pool their money tend to do better financially than those who do not. The reason being they tend to talk about their finances on a regular basis instead of these are my bills those are his mentality.

  • Ask the Readers: Camp Much? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 40 weeks ago

My boyfriend and I go camping every summer. I actually make a fire starter that I learned to make in Girl Scouts instead of buying one: take strips of corrugated cardboard and roll it tightly to fill the inside of a tuna fish can. Pour some melted parafin wax 3/4 of the way up the holes, and this turns into a giant candle that you can place under your kindling.

  • 50 Healthy Foods for Under $1 a Pound   15 years 40 weeks ago

We live in NYC. There are many things on your list that, even on sale, bought in bulk, STILL do not come in at $1 a pound.

These kinds of lists are so misleading and the headlines inaccurate...just to get people to read, it seems.

Helpful? Yes, no. Most of us who care about both eating healthy foods and watching our budget know what is/isn't a "best buy."

In fact, most of us only buy what is on sale and adapt recipes accordingly.

And the cavalier attitude about organic food? It's the reason so many people act as if it doesn't make a difference. No, you don't need every fruit/vegetable to be organic, but it makes a huge difference in some items.

you do a disservice by dismissing organics. And a lot of the very people who complain they can't afford it? The same folks who spend $$$ each week on sodas, junk food, and processed foods. No, they aren't cheap and they aren't an option for some families. But when you have the ability to choose organic fruits/veggies, why not go for it? We know people who cut back on other things to afford them (select items).

We save because we don't eat meat. That frees up a lot of $ for organic veggies and fruits and other healthy food choices. It is all about choices. YOu pay one end or the other. Eating healthy s a huge investment in your physical health. I'd rather pay farmers than insurance companies.
