  • Welcome to the Real World - My Best Advice for New Graduates   15 years 49 weeks ago

One thing I would add is do not believe everything the media tells you. I've tended to find that the media would have us believe that the graduate jobs market is broken and that it's one long bath of acid for graduates. And it's simply not true. A degree is what you make it, and there are other factors that employers take into account other than your subject, degree classification, what Uni you got it from etc. But you hardly ever hear the media talking about that.

Graduates need to be patient and tenacious and flexible. And presumably, if they've survived three years or more of terrifying deadlines, evil lecturers and come out with a degree, they already have those qualities.

Thanks for the suggestions. I find it hard to imagine using toothpaste or a banana on a CD or DVD; I can't help wondering what that could do to the player. But the metal polish sounds like a good idea (as long is it doesn't mess up the equipment).

As to the kids, well, I must say I agree with some of the other posters. If the kids are very young (i.e. toddlers), I would hope that things they shouldn't be playing with wouldn't be accessible to them. If they’re older, they can be taught not to mess with things they shouldn’t. Ideally, that training begins when they are toddlers.

I grew up with brothers and we had relatives who had easily breakable items around the house. I don’t remember any of us ever grabbing anything at a relative’s house and playing with it when we weren’t supposed to (I must admit we did once throw a “harmless” ball in the house that knocked something over, but fortunately it didn’t break.). I can’t say we never broke anything, certainly, but we never messed with records, tapes, etc.

I’ve also worked with a great number of kids from toddlers to high schoolers, and there are methods you can use to help kids learn to be disciplined. While some people say that “you can’t learn anything from books,” I learned a great deal of useful methods from reading that I used successfully in tutoring and in the classroom. I focused not on keeping the kids controlled, but on helping them learn self-control. One of the most important things you can teach a child is the reason for the rules. If a kid—or even an adult—understands the purpose behind a rule, they’re much more likely to follow it.

As a result, I had kids as young as 9 or 10 creating characters for plays and hooking up computers. And for those who want to point out that some kids are more difficult, I also worked with kids who grew up with family members in gangs. There are methods that can work for almost anyone with almost any kid (those with special medical, mental and physical problems may require specialized help). Working with kids to help them become self-disciplined is a great deal of work in the beginning, but it can pay off with years of much fewer problems.

  • Do You Practice Math When You Leave a Tip?   15 years 49 weeks ago

working at a smoothie and sandwich shop, ie a place where we were paid $7 an hour but also got tips, it was understood that the hotter girls would work the register while the guys and other girls made the food, better tips for all.

I am a clean tipper. I will usually go for 15% and then add in however much change it takes to get to a clean $....sometimes thats 75cents more so its a jump, but hardly ever 20%.

I did make a mistake once on this at a japanese steakhouse taking my girlfriend out for her birthday less than a month in to dating. I only tipped 6-7%. I tried to do my typical thing, but went 5% plus change b/c i was so flustered

  • Quickly Remove Scratches From CDs and DVDs   15 years 49 weeks ago

If you can't remove it this way and the disc is a total loss, then this product does not remove 100% of the scratches 100% of the time. Be careful with your claims.

My cd player would keep the cd and I put another cd half way in holding on to it and sliding it out very fast, makes the old one come out.

  • Are Your Financial Habits Just Bad?   15 years 49 weeks ago

The key here is to make sure that you are content with your job, life and financial situation. When we are not content we tend to make bad financial decisions. We tend to act more on emotion rather than intelligence.

Which is why I gave in and started using "Veet" or "Neet" or something similar.
And in cases where I absolutely must wear nylons of some type (wedding, etc) I wear knee-highs and a dress long enough to cover the top of the elastic (at all times).
Can't stand to have that elastic up to my waist cutting me in half and making me sweat.

Most of these things don't really work on discs that have any real damage. They work on very light scratches in some cases though.
    There are actually companies who repair discs for a reasonable charge. I use these guys to repair my dvd's and games;
    skippydisc.com
They have been able to fix almost everything I've ever sent them

  • 12 Surprising Ways to Reuse Aluminum Foil   15 years 50 weeks ago

    Not Impressed with NOTIMPRESSED
It must be nice to be so close to Godhood that you can tell people what they will or will not do!
"Who is going to hang used sheets of aluminum foil in their yeard?"
Obviously you have never spent an entire back-breaking week tilling, planting and cultivating a garden, just to see it get devoured in one night by hungry rabbits and deer. To say nothing of the extra work and expense of replanting or loss of valuable food for the table and freezer! I know MANY people who would be MORE than willing to try something like this if it stands a chance of safeguarding their garden, ESPECIALLY when it is something that can be tried for Free, using an item that was going to be thrown away!
You also could Really benefit from a visit to a Farm Supply store or large garden shop! You will find items there called "Spinners." The look exactly like a 2 foot long by 2 inch wide stip of foil twisted into a helical shape. They are bright and reflective, and made to hang loosely flutterring and twisting in the breeze. Many people mistake them for pure decoration, but they are , in fact, made to frighten animals away from your garden plants. And these items are being SOLD for cold hard cash! Gee, that sort of sounds like the use for used foil described above, doesn't it?! Except for the part about paying for it with cold hard cash, of course....
Why don't you go back to reading the Wall Street Journal, and let the WORKING people here decide FOR THEMSELVES what they will and won't try. I'm sure you don't bother or NEED to raise your own food, so keep your snobby comments to yourself!

  • 3 Ways to Save Money on Maternity Dresses   15 years 50 weeks ago

Congratulations to you and your wife.

And, though, this is technically consignment, you should consider consignment sales (not just stores) that are offered by parent groups, preschools, etc. Carrie wrote about these children's clothing sales a while back. http://www.wisebread.com/ten-cents-an-item-for-high-end-childrens-clothes Check to see if they accept and sell maternity clothing (and of course you have to wait for the sales).

  • Is "Health Food" Worse for You than Junk Food?   15 years 50 weeks ago

I would agreed with you on the standpoint that as young consumers we got sucked into the consumerism of the big businesses like McDonald and Burger King through a lot of their advertisements and sale pitches. Through the many researches and studies that are constantly bombarded at us, we can't keep straight with whom is paying for which research and what are the hidden agendas behind such actions. We as consumers are very reactive to whatever research figures that are skewed toward any side. If one is on the "health" side, that person can obliterate the idea that a treat from McDonald or KFC is bad simply and definitively because he/she links every single obese/overweight person as the fault of these establishments. I used to live in a very small town in Alabama and we didn't even have a single fast food restaurant and yet kids are still obese eating homemade meals. Vice versa, the folks on the "fast food" side will make fun of all the tree hugging, organic products loving people because the alienation that they, the raw-food eaters, tend to exude on the "bad eaters". We have made food choices turn into more of a political focal point than a socio-economic one. There seems to be more bashing and criticizing than accepting people and harmonizing the belief that one held so strongly on either extremities.

I read an article on the Wall Street Journal dated June 28, 2010 about the increased in sales of Vidalia's onion grown in such namesake town in Georgia. Case in point, this increase is cause by the money spent for advertising by Vidalia with Dreamwork SKG (producer of the cartoon Shrek the III). The farmers in Vidalia have sold more onions this year-to-date than any other year ever and they have a 2 weeks delay on the season. Kids are digging the onion from watching the cartoon. These are kids that used to hate onions.

So go on, if anyone want to fix the problem, put your money where your mouth is and do it. Start a trend if you think it worthwhile and enjoy the end results of your choice and stop the bickering.

  • Getting Free Stuff at Walgreens   15 years 50 weeks ago

One more thought. The article mentions that you can't use the RR on the same product and still generate a RR. It is actually the same manufacturer. So if Wyeth made the cough drops that gave you a $2 RR and also made the lip balm which should give you a $3RR you bought with the $2 RR, it won't give and Ur RR IS about 5 .

"Running a food company during a recession can be a tall order..."

Wouldn't running a *food* company in a recession be one of the easier tasks, seeing as people *must* have food?
