But, of course, none of those people lived on just that diet. An Irish smallholder had access to fresh or saltwater fish and shellfish, seaweeds, berries, eggs, nuts - all necessary, all pricey at market - and both the dairy (pastured on some of the lushest grass in the world and drunk raw) and the potatoes (grown in well-fertilized, mineral-rich soil) were of a nutritional quality that is difficult and expensive to find here.

Pus-filled commercial Holstein milk is not the same. Sorry.

  • Uglify Your Stuff To Keep It Safe   15 years 45 weeks ago

I call it Urban Camoflauge. Why I don't mind my car dirty and crap piled inside sorta messy. Nothing to make it look like something to break into. So what scratches and dents. The same with my yard and house, not being immaculate. Nothing to make it seem worth a home break in. The fact I have thousands of dollars worth of household items once you step past the inner front door brand new, with an older shambles outer porch door. Could never guess in an urban neighborhood with all of the other spanking remodeled houses getting attempted break ins or burglaries.

  • How To Cut Car Ownership Costs   15 years 45 weeks ago

Wish I could have convinced my DH a used car. But we got new. At least it replaced his dead 10 year old FORD. FWIW, I still have my 11 year old corolla and no plans to replace it anytime soon.

This is his second car and he's 33 and my only car is a 99 Corolla. I would have to say that buying new for us isn't so bad considering we're running them into the ground.

  • Laid Off? You May Have to Fight for Unemployment Benefits   15 years 45 weeks ago

No you cannot, you will still be "fully employed" it doesn't matter if you're making less than before, if you're considered full time, then you are not eligible. Unemployment is for people who are un or "under" employed, like not full time.

  • 5 Easy Ways to Save in 2010   15 years 45 weeks ago

I disagree with tip #3. I see this tip everywhere - make a list, stick to the list. I live in Phoenix, and almost all of the stores I shop at - Super Target, Fry's, Safeway, Basha's - have clearance sections. There are many times I have found a product that I regularly buy on clearance and I have a coupon. If I had left my coupons at home, I wouldn't be getting such an amazing deal. Instead, don't buy things that you would not use just because they are a "great price." Know the general price of things and stock up if something that you do use is well priced.

  • Is "Health Food" Worse for You than Junk Food?   15 years 45 weeks ago

First of all, you are ill informed to say that "the entire process of raising beef, chickens, and produce is unhealthy, inhumane, and goes against their natural process." This is pure nonsense. As a farmer, I can attest to the fact that animal domestication is far less cruel than leaving them to their devices in the wild. We shelter the animals, give them abundant and nutritious foods, allow them to reproduce and nurture young. We nourish them in many ways. In turn, they nourish us. That is the natural cycle of life. This way is far less cruel than the ancient hunter method of yore, and there is nothing unnatural about it. Evolutionarily, humans are omnivores, which means that we evolved to eat both plant and animal matter.

Now, I would agree that factory farms are far closer to fitting your description than family farms. But please do not condemn all farming based on some high-horse ideology based on nothing other than your personal opinion.

Second, there is no such thing as bad food. There are only bad diets. All food are nourishing, just in different ways. Some nourish body and mind; others nourish the soul and the emotions. In excess, anything is bad for you (such as carotene poisioning from too many carrots). The best diet nutritionally, as demonstrated by hundreds of studies, is a balanced one including meat. Junk food in moderation has not shown to have any deleterious effects on long term health. And interestingly, some studies show increased risk of certain diseases from vegetarian and vegan diets.

GET INFORMED before you comment on things.

  • Gluten-Free, Carb-Free Noodles   15 years 45 weeks ago

Andrea, I think the hunger on Atkins is because it is simply TOO low carb. I found that if I cheated just a bit -- left half the bun on my burger, nibbled the edge of the tortilla on my taco salad -- I was always satisfied and still lost weight at a slow but steady pace.

  • Gluten-Free, Carb-Free Noodles   15 years 45 weeks ago

Low carbs only give you brain fog for a week or two, until the body adjusts and starts using the plentiful fuels in fats and proteins to power the brain. If your body is used to carbs that's what it will try to use, but once it switches over you will feel a definite POWER SURGE and far fewer highs/lows of energy or mood.

  • Top 6 Reasons Why Using Cash-Only Rocks   15 years 45 weeks ago

    YOAV,

Lighten up man. Credit cards are not the same as cash. If they were, there would have been no reason to invent them. Interest payments can kill you if you let them get out of hand. It's a fact, people spend more with credit cards than with cash. And as far as adults having to have a visual queue, what's wrong with that? I have a visual queue to let me know when I'm about to run out of gas, when my oil is low, when my lawn needs to be cut. Hell, if adults don't need visual queue's, the government might just as well gouge all our eyes out when we reach twenty-one. Also, giving up a credit card because you can't control yourself makes PERFECT SENSE. I'd hate to see you as an AA leader. Sheesh! "Friends, we're adults here. There's no reason to give up the bourbon becuase you slap your kids around when you drink it." Credit card addiction is a very real problem with some people. And another thing, if people should just treat a credit card like cash, then why not just carry cash? Are you sure you thought out your response here? And while I'm on your case. There's IS a way people can keep track of everything they buy with cash. Real easy one too. It's called a pencil. Also, when the cash is gone, you'll know you can't buy anything. You can't tell me that if you've maxed out your card and then come across that item you've been waiting your whole life to aquire shows up, that you don't whip it out. Buddy, NOBODY is that solid.

  • Is MagicJack a Scam?   15 years 45 weeks ago

Hello, Let's say My name is SuperMobilBob , you can take it from me that the Magic Jack is a the only phone I will ever have for the next five years. Depending on your computer power and internet speed of your ISP. The better the computer with the better internet speed,, the phone works good enough for me to run a company off of it and I don't have to pay a employee to answer the phone. some times I have to hang up and redial the number again for a better connection.I can take it to any Library can check my voice e-mails so I don't miss a call. And If you cant understand the caller you still get there phone number in the e-mail so you can call them back and never miss a beat. it's not better than your old phone that's for sure but it's a lot more friendlier every month. with no bills. sincerely SuperMobilBob

I suggest just purchaing the microphone, and more RAM....get with the program.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   15 years 45 weeks ago

Has anyone reported them to the BBB? They wanted me to deposit money then if I used the card to "keep the account full" so what they were trying to do is blur the lines between a "Prepaid Debit Card" and a "Secured Credit Card". Can you say Shady business practices? Here is a little info maybe some can find it useful if you already know the difference between prepaid debit and a secured CC then disregard... Thanks MYK

Prepaid Debit Card = just like a bank you deposit money then use your card and it comes right out of your account. No interest is added to any charges it is "just like cash".

Secured Credit Card = Is an account you open with an initial deposit($500 ex.) and that is your "limit". You'll receive the card w/$500 limit and go use it, once you get your monthly statement(s) you see the charge(s) and just like a normal credit card you have to pay a minimum(w/Interest) or pay in full. Your initial deposit is basically a "security deposit" that you get back once you close the account or THE ISSUER TAKES when you dont make payments. This is nice for financial beginners HOWEVER you should go to YOUR bank (which might give you a small amount if interest on your deposit) to set up the account.

AT NO TIME should a "Financial Institution"(using that loosely) just send you a CC, secured CC, Debit card or even a replacement card without notifying you first well in advance.

  • The Debate Between Buy and Hold vs Timing The Market   15 years 46 weeks ago

Look at where all of the major indices were in May/June of 1998. Add in the average inflation rate, plug in some regular buy and hold purchases, and you have a nice fat NET LOSS on almost all of those purchases. But regular contributions will mean that your overall balance has climbed, so you pat yourself on the back.

But the truth is that your balance is actually lower than if you had invested in CD's or treasuries or even a money market account.

This 12-year period may be a blip in the longer timeline, or it may be a plateau, or it may signal a longer decline, but I believe that the individual investor would be wise to rethink the 'conventional wisdom' regarding investing...
