  • How to Get Rid of All Your Crap   16 years 6 weeks ago

@Ramanuj - My decision to pare down (and travel full-time) was spurred on by a life-long dream and a niggling voice that wouldn't go away telling me to get out there and do it - now, not in 30 years during a conventional retirement. The triggering event was a series of illnesses (not terribly serious, mind you, but enough to set me back) that made me stop and consider what I was doing with my life and decide if I was happy to keep doing it for the next 30 years before living out my dreams of travel. (The answer was no!)

The card is GREAT. YOU NEVER GET HIT WITH A $37.00 bank fee. If the money's not there you can't spend it, look at a Bank statement and figure the fees. It's the best thing to give a 15 year old to teach them responsabilty.

  • Ask the Readers: To Garage Sale or Not? (Chance to win $20)   16 years 6 weeks ago

I LOVE garage sales. I grew up going to them with my Mom and Dad and have held several myself, although that's not as fun 'cause it's a lot of work.

My Dad is gone now and when I go to garage sales, I miss him being with us, but I have passed the tradition down to my son and we both have a great time together spending a Saturday garage saleing even if we don't find any treasures.

Thanks for your great chats! And congrats on your new baby due soon!

  • Ask the Readers: To Garage Sale or Not? (Chance to win $20)   16 years 6 weeks ago

I love garage sales. Yes...I've probably brought home things I don't need in the past. Then got to where I'd just buy clothes or dishes that we needed. Haven't been in a while now though...no money.

  • Be at Peace in Less Than 5 Minutes   16 years 6 weeks ago

Thanks a lot for the post. There are a lot of good points here, and I'd like to offer my take if I might.

I think a distinction needs to be made between being positive and being at peace. Technically, developing focus, the ability to quell the constantly running thoughts in one's brain is different from being positive. At least in standard meditation philosophy, focus is particularly about not judging the moment as it passes, in fact not having any opinion of the moment at all. Meditation is that art of cultivating that focus.

Positivity on the other hand (and with it gratitude) is a very concrete stance regarding the moment, it imposes a judgment on the moment. Some Buddhists might argue that this is no better than judging the moment negatively, as you become just as invested in the moment and therefore open yourself up to it being a stressor.

Now, granted, I'm not saying I necessarily follow this thought process or agree with it, but I think that in speaking of focus and "being at peace" in these terms it's important to be clear on definitions. It's a very important skill to hone, to calm the constant barrage of thoughts and opinions that flow through our minds on a daily basis, and it can certainly lead to more positivity and gratitude, but the process of developing focus should be separated from those things.

I've dabbled in meditation from time to time and would like to make it a consistent practice, but one reason it has not yet happened is that I have come to realize it's not a gimmick, something you can be a dilettante in, but rather something that you need to learn to cultivate in every moment, all the time.

Yeah, Warman, the milehigh people have the whole kit and caboodle for about $15. The hydrometer will tell you how much alcohol you have in your wash, (theres loads of easy to read charts online where you just type in your starting and finishing readings and it comes up with how much alcohol you can expect); and they include an alcoholometer as well. You just pour your finished moonshine into a measuring container and float the alcoholometer in it and read the scale printed on it to see what percentage alcohol by volume you have. (just double it to give you an american "proof" figure). Really easy. I have one myself.

I usually go to flea markets instead of garage sales. There's a giant flea market and festival at the end of July that I always go to and people living nearby have garage sales, but I usually just go to the flea market part.

I had a yard sale once but no one bought hardly anything. It wasn't worth it really. I swear I probably only made $5.00 or $10.00 Someone wanted my walkie talkies and wanted me to throw in a Barbie doll, too. People really want steals.

I would look for books if I went to a garage sale.

very interesting read. Your post has led me to think of experimenting with simplification in another area in which I am interested.

Was there any personal motivation to the decision of shifting from the materialistic way of life, in which we are driven by the instinct of accumulating more and more possessions? I am not asking for a retrospective evaluation, but what triggered the decision.

I think that for the most part garage sales are full of a lot of useless crap, but you can occasionally get some good deals on useful stuff if you're lucky. I'm not a big fan of hosting them because its a bit of a pain in the ass, but after my baby is a bit older, I plan to organize a block wide sale to try to make some money off of all my generous friends and their numerous shower gifts.

  • The Debate Between Buy and Hold vs Timing The Market   16 years 6 weeks ago

    Hi,

Having around 10% of your capital in 'mad money' is a good strategy because if the potential gains are usually so high that you can make a good profit out of this strategy. The remaining 90% should be well diversified ank kept in a long term 'buy and hold' strategy. ETFs are a good vehicle to achieve this strategy as they keep costs down and take advantage of long term trends.

Of course, the last 10 years are not a good reference of long term profitability...

    Try this, http://www.milehidistilling.com/alcohol_ethanol_e85_measuring_equiptment...

It works on a wash, clean, no grains. You take a reading of the sugar in the wash. When it is done fermenting, you take another reading. This tells how much sugar was converted to alcohol. There is a meter that works only for distilled alcohol. I have not used one. You could just do the bubble test. You can do a search for popcorn sutton on youtube. He can show you how to judge the content by reading the bubbles. He was the real deal on moonshiners.

Here is a recipe for all corn. I would not suggest PURE corn, without the sugar. Corn does not ferment as well. You should consider adding some enzymes. I've mentioned before bean-o, try that.

    Whiskey
    INGREDIENTS:
10 lbs. Whole kernel corn, untreated
    5 Gallons Water
1 Cup Yeast, champagne yeast starter

    DIRECTIONS:
Put corn in a burlap bag and wet with warm water. Place bag in a warm dark
place and keep moist for about ten days. When the sprouts are about a 1/4" long
the corn is ready for the next step. Wash the corn in a tub of water, rubbing
the sprouts and roots off.. Throw the sprouts and roots away and transfer the
corn into your primary fermenter. With a pole or another hard object mash the
corn, make sure all kernels are cracked. Next add 5 gallons of boiling water
and when the mash cools add yeast. Seal fermenter and vent with a water sealed
vent. Fermentation will take 7-10 days. When fermentation is done, pour into
still filtering through a pillow case to remove all solids.

  • How to Be Happy and Married: 24 Tips from a 24-Year-Old Marriage   16 years 6 weeks ago

I understand where you are coming from. As someone who is coming up on her first anniversary this weekend, I admit - it's nice to have someone not only be a lover, best friend, but also a finacial partner. However, as a single person you only have to worry about your finacial approach to life and not have to align your money values with a partner. Marriage has brought contentment, warmth, a feeling of peace, but also hour-long conversations on whether we can afford to order take-out, generic vs. brand name, why someone can't put a price tag on quality of life, etc.

I wouldn't change my husband for anything or my marriage for the world. But please see both sides of the finacial coin on married vs. single.

I love to garage sale. I live in Southwest Iowa and there are some really good neighborhood ones and some small town nearby have city-wide garage sales. I only will garage sale with a list so I do not come home with a lot of junk.
For example, I have a 7 month old son and I am currently looking for clothes for him size 9-18 months to last through the winter. Baby clothes are the best to get at garage sales because they only wear things a couple of times!

  • Turn Off Your Air Conditioning   16 years 6 weeks ago

Here's the only problem with this....ac (with a decent filter) is one of the few ways to effectively clean the indoor air during the summer in Sacramento. Sacramento has the sixth (6th really!) worst air in the entire country! So all that "fresh air" coming in is loaded with particulates and ozone, even during the evenings.

Might be a good idea to invest in an air purifier at least in the room you're going to sleep in. Evening air in Sacramento may be cooler but it is just as filthy most of the time as the air during the day. Check out sparetheair.com for further info, if desired...

I have to disagree with the "don't compete." I've been with my partner for 8 years and we are extremely competative. The result? We drive ourselves to be constantly better and don't allow each other to stagnate. Keeps things more interesting that way and we are driven to do things we never thought we could do.
