How then do you explain my local store often playing the radio broadcast of sports events instead of music?
And as far as going to the grocery story just for milk and coming out with $100 worth of items. If this happens to you often, why not just go to a convenience or drug store? A lot of local ones have very competitive prices on milk and if that is truly all you need its easier to go into a much smaller store!

  • 10 Reasons Why I Prefer Credit Cards Over Cash   17 years 1 week ago

And canceling my accounts. With the government taking over the banks, privacy will soon be dead when it comes to banking. I don't trust those "safety deposit boxes" either. Back in the 1930's my grandfather had a bunch of gold coins in his when that thief FDR ordered the confiscation of it all and they paid out less than it was worth. I would recommend getting all your valuables out of safety deposit boxes and finding other places to keep and hide your stuff.

If you got bills every month, having a checking account is ok, but don't leave all your money in there. Get it out and either put it in a savings account in another bank or just cash it out. My checking account usually have enough to pay all my bills and an extra $20. Otherwise, I cash out the rest of my pay check and pay cash for everything because I don't want the government to know what my shopping habits are.

But imagine the possibilities of a government owned and run banking system. There are some politically incorrect businesses out there, like Wal-Mart. Imagine if the Obama admin were able to strong arm banks in to limiting the number of payments to Wal-Mart, McDonalds and other places the liberals don't like. And the reason they'd do that is in the name of fairness and force people to shop at a bunch of other stores in a given time period, like a month. Then when they worry people are going to Wal-Mart and paying cash, they'll get rid of cash completely and force everyone to use cards/checks thus ending financial privacy forever and opening up the entire country to ID thieves and government snooping.

"6. Talk to people in person or on the phone. Email is a hideously inefficient and impersonal way to communicate, and personally I don’t get the whole IM thing. The time lost could be better spent connecting with a real person."

If you don't think email, IM, or other online interactions are with real people, then you shouldn't be using them.

And just in case any of my friends or family ever read this? Don't call me if an email will do. I don't like phone conversations. In-person is nice, of course -- because how else will I be sure you're a real person? ;-)

I noticed such a difference in my shopping habits when I started bringing my mp3 player grocery shopping. I tend to focus more on my list, don't deal with the influential music, and it just makes for a more pleasurable shopping experience. Try it sometime!

  • Encounter With a Freegan   17 years 1 week ago

Why yes, yes I do. They eat lettuce, brocolli, carrots, apples, pears, chocolate, Chips, eggs, cheese you name it from the dumpsters I crawl. None of us have gotten sick from it yet. Infact I took my 15 yr old out diving with me. We ran into a couple who where diving at the same location. It was quite cool. I ask. Where does your produce come from? You answer, the ground. I ask is there any difference? proper cleaning is all that is required to render the things you find in a dumpster edible. Don't just pick up an apple sitting in a puddle of ooze and eat it, you wash it first. Common sense is really all that you need to eat from a dumpster. TRY IT you'll like it.

  • Getting by without money in Spain   17 years 1 week ago

Enjoyable post for the most part, but okupación= occupation= squatting. Using someone else's property without permission is the same thing as using someone's car, computer, financial resources, etc. without permission. Voluntarily removing yourself from a money economy is a noble thing, but that doesn't give you the right to steal. It's better (and more honest) to postpone dropping out of a cash society, save, pool resources with other like-minded people, and buy a communal space. Just taking what you want and/or need because you choose not to participate in the economy is wrong.

  • Behold: The Secrets of the Grocery Store   17 years 1 week ago

Not for everything, but for things we always keep on hand. We rotate among stores - our food coop one week, a big-box grocer the next, Aldi the next, and Costco occasionally - so if I notice something I usually buy at Aldi is on sale at one of the more expensive stores, I have the Aldi (per-ounce) price handy, to compare.

This is especially handy at Costco, because their sizes are irregular so it's harder to compare prices.

  • Do You Need a Disaster Survival Kit?   17 years 1 week ago

    Good list.

I see this was written in 2007. Do you feel any better about your governments ability to take care of you? I feel like being prepared is good, but also pray a lot. If God can take care of the sparrows and the lilies of the field then He knows what we need.

  • Behold: The Secrets of the Grocery Store   17 years 1 week ago

    Great tips.

Grocery stores are full of tricks and traps to get you to spend more. One interesting tactic is to get you to spend more time in the store. The more time you spend in the store the more money you'll spend as well.

This is why you'll have a hard time finding a clock on the wall in a supermarket. This would only remind you of how much time you've spent shopping.

Ever notice that the only windows in the store are located at the front? This makes you less aware of the passing of time as well. Much like a casino it becomes difficult to determine how much time has elapsed.

Music has been scientifically selected to slow your shopping pace. Certain music has been shown to actually slow your heartbeat, thus slowing your shopping pace.

As mentioned in the above post, not only are staples like dairy products and sugar placed near the back of the store but they are also places at opposite corners of the store to make you spend even more time in the store.

This is very timely for many people. I would add if you know you will be laid off or fear it-- get all your medical and dental visits in while you still have coverage.

A very helpful post for me as I'm one of the well-educated working uninsured (which sucks, yo). However, that first link- ahealthcenter.hrsa.gov - doesn't go anywhere, so not quite so helpful actually. Correct link, please?

  • Having Fun at Work, Life, and Everything In-Between   17 years 1 week ago

    Dear Guest,

I agree, and I made the mistake of deviating from my thesis, so excuse me. I ended up changing certain things about the piece. In the end, my point is not that we should be friends with our colleagues, which has it's share of pitfalls as you've mentioned, but more so that it is important to make the most of our leisure time for the personal and professional benefits that may arise. I feel that friends are a large part of that, but did not mean to imply that we should be close friends with the people we work with.

Thanks for stopping by and pointing that out.

  • Do generous unemployment benefits prolong the length of unemployment?   17 years 1 week ago

$475 per week for 79 weeks means homelessness in the California Bay Area, if you are working alone. No body would pass up a job that they really want, even if they're receiving unemployment. If your paycheck is being deducted while you are working, it should be fair for you to collect as long as you can. It not like the economy is going to get better anytime soon, so pay attention. I rather see people collecting unemployment than committing crime, not like everyone would do just that, but there's a high chance.

You may not have intended it, but your wording made it sound as though Planned parenthood is only for women. Guys are welcome too! Beyond making sure our reproductive parts are working well, many PP clinics offer flu shots and other health services we don't normally associate with procreation. Spread the word!

I was SO reminded of that marketing to kids point when in CVS today and my 2-foot-tall toddler was presented with that counter FULL of candy.

Funny to hear that people don't shop on Wednesdays. I often do, because the new sales start the next day and the new flyers are out, so if there are deals about to expire I grab them on Wed. I even start my new grocery budget each week on Wed.

    I blog at www.shopliftingwithpermission.com.
