  • 6 Smartphone Apps to Help you Save Big   16 years 8 weeks ago

I do not own an IPhone but have several friends who do.

I certainly see where all the "app" fever is being generated from . I agree with the earlier comment, downloading a lot of apps could be expensive.

I would stick to the ones I use on a regular basis.

  • The First Time Home Buyer Credit: How Big of a Deal Is It?   16 years 8 weeks ago

i was in the market anyway but the tax credit helped me buy a house that i would have been hesitant to buy otherwise. i fell in love with the house, the location and the price itself was great ... but the roof is coming up on 19 years old. there were some structural problems on one end that the sellers repaired as part of the sale but the rest of it needs new shingles this year. fortunately, knowing that the roof is sound for now and i'll have the money to reshingle before it becomes an issue i was able to get the house i love

i don't feed my pets homemade food but i noticed a few mentions of organ meats being included and it seemed appropriate to mention a source of inexpensive organ meats that i see quite often - asian grocery stores. there are two near me with in house butchering that sell every single part of the animal.

i did seriously consider getting my dog the "beef feet" as special occasional treats but he tends to take his sloppy treats onto the light colored carpet and roll around on them so this will be a warm weather outdoor special treat in a couple of months

  • Will Obama's new mortgage plan really reward responsibility?   16 years 8 weeks ago

i agree with the previous post.

we are a generation of idiots. if a banker told our fathers that they would give them a 500,000 loan when he was only making 50,000 he would have pushed back and said no way.

we cant blame the banks or lenders...just ourselves.

i am someone who bought with in my means and feel that as usual i am getting the short end of the stick for acting responsible.

why does someone get rewarded for buying incorrectly, financing incorrectly, living beyond their means and acting ignorant to the ongoings of the world economy.

i will bet that half of the people in trouble have brand new cars, maxed out credit cards, the highest cellphone plans and newest iphones and tech gadgets.

why shouldnt a person who pays their mortgage on time get a tax credit.

is anyone else going to say this isnt fair.

Reward the responsible and more people will strive to be responsible. Reward ignorance and more people will give up.

I agree that you won't save money if you run out and buy a smartphone just for the apps.  I personally didn't even own a cell until last year, when a project allowed me to get one for almost nothing.  For those who are already spending money on a phone, apps are a great way to get a little more from their plans -- and don't forget about the many employees who get their phones AND their service subsidized or paid in full as a work perk!  These are the people who are most likely able to download apps and realize the most savings potential.

    Thanks for the comments :)

  • $9 Fares at Spirit Airlines – But is it a Bargain?   16 years 8 weeks ago

Does anyone know how to find them & do they exist on Spirts site?

I am a $9 member but if you don't live near one their hubs I would never join.

Their customer or lack of stinks. I would ask a simple yes or no question and he would go on for 5 minutes not addressing anything I asked for. Just venting on that issue.

  • Homemade Dog Food: Recipe and Cost   16 years 8 weeks ago

    Check out this excellent website:

    www.catnutrition.org

I have been feeding our two cats a raw diet, based approximately on this site's recipe, for 4 years. They LOVE it, are in fantastic health, and look like show animals even though both are mutts adopted from the local shelter. Regarding cost, I find here (in central Missouri) it costs about $20 a month to feed two cats this way, which is more than dry bagged food but less than canned, although the price is going to vary based on food costs in your area and the appetites of your kitties. It takes some work--that is the only disadvantage--but if like me you enjoy messing around in the kitchen, it's quite fun to do and the cats will adore you for it.

One really important thing about cats: it's essential that you make sure they are getting an adequate supply of taurine. This is an amino acid that their bodies cannot synthesize but is essential for their health, rather like Vitamin C for humans. Taurine supplements are required, therefore, unless you have access to organ meat like heart that contains large quantities of taurine. Without it, they will have various health problems, including possible blindness.

  • Lower Credit Card Rates? Just Ask!   16 years 8 weeks ago

Chase didn't give me the time of day. Then blamed it Obama for creating new rules for credit cards :(.
I will never deal with Chase again. They stink!

  • Lower Credit Card Rates? Just Ask!   16 years 8 weeks ago

Chase don't give a damn about losing a customer. I called for a lower APR, the was rude, didn't even look to see if there was something for me, and use the card of,
"Well, since all of the new changes in the credit card laws, we will not lower your APR". Chase has just lost a valuable customer. Screw Chase :(

  • 20 Signs That You Were Raised By TRUE Money-Savers   16 years 8 weeks ago

Well, I didn't read through all the comments on this page but a lot of people are making jabs at the poor. Yes, I guess I did grow up poor. A lot of us have, haven't we? And that's why we watch our finances now, so we don't HAVE to live like that. My parents had 6 children, my mom stayed at home and my dad worked at a low paying sawmill. I'm the youngest so by the time I came around I already had adult brothers. We lived in a very small town in the UP. My family immigrated from Germany. I did grow up poor, which I am grateful for. Of course I hated it when I was a teen but it taught me a LOT. I'm financially wise and stable now. I wish my parents were still alive so I could take care of them and return the favor :( Although I don't raise my daughters the way I was raised (because I don't have to) I teach them ways to save money every day.

  • 20 Signs That You Were Raised By TRUE Money-Savers   16 years 8 weeks ago

Absolutely! My mom used to bake our own bread....put on a little butter and sprinkled on some sugar. My kids love it too! She'd also shred carrots from the garden and sprinkle that with sugar. I remember that as a night time snack while watching television. I can relate to a LOT of these ways to save money on food! I grew up on deer, quail and smelt that my dad and brothers would hunt, and vegetables and fruit my grew in our garden. I personally don't live that way now, but my parents did what was necessary and I've learned a lot of money lessons from them!

  • Cost Comparison: Emergency Rooms vs. Urgent Care Centers   16 years 8 weeks ago

If you life is not in danger, regardless of co-pay rate you should go to UC. Will you get faster service?...maybe. At least your insurer will not have to pay the ridiculous ER rates. Why do think health coverage cost's soo much? If we all tried to save the insurance companies money, it may bring the cost of insurance down some Plus... If we all used UC in place of ER's, those with life treating conditions will have a better chance of survival.

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   16 years 9 weeks ago

My family has health insurance through my husband's employer - it's the best option available to us. My employer doesn't offer me any health insurance. Our 2-year-old was in the hospital for 4 nights last month with RSV (a very common respiratory virus). AFTER our insurance paid, WE have to pay about $4600! Our insurance covers 75% and we have to pay the rest - no matter how high it gets. I've been desperately looking for a secondary insurance option because I'm pregnant and we're going to get hit hard again in several months with labor & delivery costs - again, 75% covered by our insurance, that's it. Labor & delivery can easily exceed $10,000. There doesn't seem to be a secondary insurance option for us. Even WITH health insurance, your life can be screwed over with medical bills. What do you do?

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 9 weeks ago

There's nothing wrong with NetSpend at all...yeah they charge some fees but shouldn't they? They're giving you a debit card without a bank account and some people can't get bank accounts for various reasons and this service gives them the convenience of having a card that you could even use for direct deposits, shopping online and not having to carry around a wad of cash so NetSpend....you rock!
