  • Ask the Readers: Where Do You Want to Retire?   11 years 44 weeks ago

Oh I would love to retire in Venice Florida! My grandmother lived there for the winters when I was growing up. Spent time with her walking the Venice beaches looking for shells and sharks teeth. I LOVED it there and hope to retire there someday!

I would love to retire somewhere at the Oregon coast, but I don't think I (or anyone in my generation) am really going to be able to retire.

  • 20 Little Ways to Make Your Stuff Last Longer   11 years 44 weeks ago

If the bottom of a vinyl shower curtain is beyond washing, cutting off a few inches of the moldy part will give i a few more months. After that, it will make a good picnic table cover or drop cloth. Shower curtain liners only cost $1 or so at .99 and Dollar stores, but they tend to be the kind that outgas and smell bad for a while, so air them outside if you have a place to do that.

  • The 6 Qualities All DIYers Have — Do You?   11 years 44 weeks ago

I love to try stuff out. With so many videos on youtube you can learn anything. I took a class recently on how to finish your basement. It got me excited to a lot of work, but at the same time I learned that I also can't do everything myself and it would be better to hire someone than spend too much time doing shoddy work. DIY'ers are entrepreneurs in the home self improvement business.

  • Best Money Tips: Ways for Families to Save in September   11 years 44 weeks ago

I think that besides buying powdered milk, carefully watching the food bill, etc, families should also do a proactive system of putting money to the side to invest. You can either keep going to your job and bringing home a check and thats it, or you can also start having your money on the side working for you also bringing you an income. And if you are good enough at it, money will free you to indulge in travel and your true interests.

I want to be near my side of the family with my husband, so it will probably be right where I am in southern Ohio.

  • Ask the Readers: Where Do You Want to Retire?   11 years 44 weeks ago

I actually never imagined myself relocating to retire! But if I did, maybe somewhere in Oregon. It's a stretch for me to move there now since it's so far from family, but maybe in my golden years...

I'd love to retire in a warm place, either Hawaii or another island, and open a little shop on the beach to sell something fun and creative.

  • The 5 Best Internal Solid State Drives   11 years 44 weeks ago

Not a bad article but leaves out a few major drives. It's hard to understand the relative performance between the drives by reading the article. Each drives talking points are also generic statements that apply to every solid state drive (aside from warranty, encryption).

The top notch performance drives are the Samsung 850 pro and the SanDisk Extreme Pro. This is for people who want the best of the best in SSD.

Beyond that (and at <50% of the cost of the top notch drives) the 2 best cost/performance consumer drives depending on rebates are the Crucial MX100 and the Samsung 840 EVO. These are both outstanding drives and will satisfy 95% of computer users out there.

All data can be found on anandtech.com website.

Though I'm not quite retired, we have already moved from super high-priced San Francisco Bay Area to our retirement location--Elk Grove, CA. It's has the advantage of much lower property values. We were able to buy a 40% bigger house for 60% less. Other advantages: Away from hustle/bustle but not too isolated, just 20 minutes to Sacramento and 2 hours to SF. Close to recreation--mountains to the west, ocean to the east. An airport nearby for travel. Easy access to great healthcare. And best of all, we are just 1.5 miles from our grandchildren.

I'd like to retire near the ocean with grandkids nearby

  • 10 Little Words That Will Get You the Best Price, Every Time   11 years 44 weeks ago

Great, accurate list! Having built a business around negotiations, I can say that these are all very effective and will all help you get a good deal. I think the concept behind a lot of these is showing respect and, ultimately, working together.

Many people approach a negotiation as if the other person is an adversary. The reality is that all parties have a common interest in aligning with one another. I've found that when you make it clear that you're working toward the same goal, negotiations are much smoother and more effective. Using pleasantries like the first few mentioned are a great way to communicate this.

Great question! We are about 3 yrs and 3 mos away from pulling the plug. We are looking for some place near good health care with a stable supply of unpolluted ground water. We want a hobby farm! The ideal is a place we can age out in. I have lived in 10 different states and countries in my life and think I want to stay put, but who knows...

I'd like to retire in southern Italy.

  • Ask the Readers: Where Do You Want to Retire?   11 years 44 weeks ago

We have talked about retirement (still quite a few years away), and we have several criteria. Small town, active art community, within a 90 minute drive of a large airport, warmer weather (we live in Nortern Michigan, I'm tired of snow!), and great restaurants. Basically, I want to transplant our town -- which we love -- to a warmer climate!! Can I do that?

  • Ask the Readers: Where Do You Want to Retire?   11 years 44 weeks ago

I like the area we live in now -- between the mountains and the coast of NC. I hope we can downsize considerably, keeping our quality of life/home, and travel extensively and often.

  • Ask the Readers: Where Do You Want to Retire?   11 years 44 weeks ago

On the road. We plan to sell the home, hook up the camper, and hit the highways while we are still able. Travel the USA and see some different sights. Then when driving a lot becomes too much, travel and park long-term someplace warm in the winter (Arizona? Florida? Texas?) and someplace more north for the summer (probably back to the Northeast).

  • Ask the Readers: Where Do You Want to Retire?   11 years 44 weeks ago

We hope to retire to a small town (Ligonier, PA, somewhere with a beach in FL, or in a RV so we can travel to the kids). One that we can walk to stores and restaurants (on sidewalks) and still be near the future grandkids. Right now we have 10 years to visit all the possibilities and see where the kids end up.

  • 35 Mouth Watering Lentil Recipes   11 years 44 weeks ago

Lentils cook quickly and continue cooking off heat so they go to glue fast. Because they are so versatile it's important to keep the desired result in mind and adjust cooking times according.

In salads where a grain-like consistency is the goal, take off the boil and cold-rinse to stop internal cooking. Where a thicker, more unified consistency is the goal, cook on lower heat. With lentils, I also like to get my spices into the pot sooner rather than later.

I just want to be able to see water: ocean, river, lake--doesn't matter.
