I grew up in Waco and couldn't wait to get away. It sounds like things have changed somewhat since I moved away almost 10 years ago now, but I always remember it being as one of the most boring places to be. Baylor is EVERYTHING to the city, and it always got on my nerves. I come from a Baylor family (dating back over 100 years), and if you didn't want to be associated with the school, then you weren't going to amount to much. I very much prefer Fort Worth or Conroe to Waco, cost of living regardless.
I use Skype to chat with all of my international friends and colleagues and to stay in touch with closer friends and family when I'm close to exceeding my cell phone plan's monthly minutes!
I stay in touch with friends and family by using Facebook, Twitter, calling on my home phone (one set price bundled with cable; unlimited long distance); texting on my cell phone.
Last year I found a great cell phone service provider > Ting. You pay for only what you use. Since my husband and I do not use our cell phones that much I wanted to give it a try. Our monthly phone bill for both of us is in the $30-$35 range. I huge savings over the
$120 a month I was paying to Verizon for just my phone. I am making the same amount of calls and texts that I did with Verizon but by paying only for what I use (like I said I am not a heavy cell phone user) I am only paying about $15 a month!
Would love to be able to find a way to save on our cable bill. We have cable, internet and home phone bundled to save what we can but it is still almost $200 a month and we do not have any movie channels.
If you and your friend need similar items that are personal, such as a high end bike, shop together. Many retailers will give you a discount or upgrade simply for buying two. (These are items that one does not loan. A racing bike is custom fit for a single person, so please, don't ask to borrow. Also, be prepared to purchase a new " whatever you borrow" if you break or damage something belonging to someone else. And if that happens, they get both the new one and the broken one back along with a handwritten letter of apology.
Bring them over to your own house every week for a decent meal. Or, if they are well off, go to their house. Either you or them will save money, and you will never regret it after they are gone.
I'm not so sure about AARP. AARP earns more income from selling insurance to members than it does from membership dues. I am eligible for membership, but after weighing the benefits compared to the discounts I might take advantage of, membership is not worth the $16/year price to me.
I have extended family everywhere and one of the main ways we stay in contact is by facebook, oovo, texting and my kids can talk to their cousins with apple devices by face chat

I call my parents via Skype. Added bonus they get to see their two year old grandson play in the background.
We email often.

We write letters and send pictures via mail.
