  • 3 Cheap and Easy Formulas for Homemade Windshield De-Icer (Plus Bonus Tips)   17 years 17 weeks ago

    Brian,

I'll agree that 10-minutes is way too long for most people to let their cars idle on a typical cold day.  The reason I have to do this lately, is for two reasons:

#1:  The -30 windchill weather that requires my car to at least warm up to a temperature to be able to use my defrost function before driving off.  If I leave and it is NOT warmed up properly, my windshield will fog up.  (Letting your car warm up on the way to your destination can be dangerous if there is a risk of reduced visability.)

#2:  I have small children (an infant, specifically).  I will under no circumstances take my kids out into my van with below zero temperatures, and my vehicle not warmed up sufficiently.  If you've ever experienced a small baby gasping for air because it's super-cold, you'll know where I'm coming from.

But for most people and climates, I'll agree that 10 minutes is excessive (and I won't do it if not needed.)  Also, diesel engines won't warm up much after 2 minutes, anyway, (and can actually get colder if left to idle too long.)

    Thanks for the comments!

Your vehicle does not need 10 minutes of idling. It will warm up far faster by driving it than by sitting still in your driveway. Idling uses up a not insignificant amount of fuel and releases tons of CO2 every year. Don't do it.

Please enter me for the draw.
I'm really interested to read this. As an immigrant to Canada in 1970 I left behind my UK family, including my brother who followed all the traditional family rules and expections. I broke the family rules: I became an art teacher, emigrated, became a Minister of religion, hospital Chaplain, art therapist and now retired on a small income follow my own spiritual and artistic path ( the same thing).
Thanks and Blessings..I love your site

Throwing my name into the hat for this book! I could use a read that has a bit of optimism and points me towards change in this poor economic climate and uncertainty over whether I will have a job a couple of months from now.

Kiyosaki is far from being a tycoon. Playboy bunnies also hang around rich people, it doesn't mean you should listen to them. He also claims his desertion from military duty.

His books tend to be filled with platitudes and have little concrete information. He might be good at selling books but has provided no proof about his financial abilities.

  • Book review: Game Over   17 years 17 weeks ago

I have been reading this book called Small Is Beautiful. It's an interesting book that was published in the early 1970's that foretold the impending doom that we face if we don't use our resources wisely. It's unfortunate that our lives our so dependent on non-renewable natural resources. It makes me wonder if the future generations have to look forward to a life similar to the pre-industrial age.

as I emailed lunch menu choices to my boss while standing at his favorite take-out place, I couldn't help but think, "gee, is this really where I want to be and what I want to be doing?"

well, "no" and "no" are the short answers. . .

please enter me in the drawing, I'm very intrigued to read more

Rich Dad, Poor Dad was one of the first books I read when I started on my personal development quest. Not sure exactly how it fell into my hands; I do remember it was a book I checked out from the library! I thought I could answer yes to the questions (forever and for free) to my current position, but in my heart, I can't. So while I feel rich financially, with my modest income that provides me with everything I need, I don't always feel rich in spirit - I'd love to hear with the Kiyosakis have to say! Thanks for the contest!

  • Personal Finance Lessons from Online Adventure Game (RuneScape)   17 years 17 weeks ago

The truth is that the most Runescape haters, hate it because they reach almost nothing.(combat lv. 5 and thats it) or got hacked.
or their jealous because their friends are high lv. (like a level 40 with only 3k and full bronze is jealous about his friend with a acc. from combat lv. 120 with full Dragon and about 2Bill.)

    But RS Ownz all :D

  • Plan for your wants   17 years 17 weeks ago

If more people got a good handle on what exactly is the difference between their wants and needs, they would be able to manage their money better. I know how tempting an impulse buy can be and have fallen for it often in the past. Now, I can stand in the aisle and talk myself out of the "want" purchase, or at least buy myself time to think about it. Saving for my wants has definately gotten easier.

  • Thinking Inside the “Little White Receipt Box”   17 years 17 weeks ago

It all still boils down to proper financial management. I know it may sound cliche, but it's always best to avoid overspending. As much as possible, stick with the necessities. Never mind the brand.

  • The Great Whitening Hype   17 years 17 weeks ago

People shouldn't be too overzealous on whitening their teeth too much. It's a common misconception that a regular teeth whitening regimen is healthy. Use them at your own risk, but please consult your dentists first.

i answered "no" to the first two questions and "nothing" to the third, unfortunately. i would definitely say that i've never found my soul's purpose, and it is easily the greatest regret and frustration of my life so far.

i will have to check out his writings.

  • Organized tips on getting through tough times   17 years 17 weeks ago

I too think that practical skills should be taught to those coming up in the world. Thanks for the additional resources. I know there are a lot of people not only struggling to make ends meet but to also understand what they can do to help themselves..since so many have learned they can only rely on themselves and those close to them.

  • What will be pulled off the shelves? The impact of the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act   17 years 17 weeks ago

Of course when i was a child I didn't worry too much about anything outside of snacks, friends, and playtime. But what a shame that parents know have to fear the clothes they put on their child's back on top of the other terrible things ingrained in our society. Kids can no longer go out and play until the streetlights come on. They have to grow up a little faster than I did.

I hope that there can be a way to correct what is wrong without ruining the other things in people's lives, such as hobbies, yard sales for extra cash, and just generositiy that people like to extend to children out of the kindness of their own hearts.

Wow! I was pretty impressed by the results. However, your current career is asked for, so does that somehow influence the results? Either way, it was a fun colour-analysis to partake in.

it is hard to find the balance between obsessing about money and being responsible but not letting money control you. this sounds like a great look at that very issue!

  • Book Review and Giveaway: Rich Brother Rich Sister   17 years 17 weeks ago

My sister and I have been comparing ourselves to one another forever. She's a great person so the comparisons aren't always easy. There are aspects of life which we both acknowledge she handles better than I do, but there are other areas of life in which I excel. But that raises more questions for me, rather than less: is that the norm? That one sibling would excel in a given area (such as finance) while another achieves in a totally unrelated field (such as spiritual practice)?

My older sister is decidedly more practical. That is not to say I am a spendthrift; I am rather strict with my spending/saving as well. But whereas she is able to see longterm goals, I have trouble alotting money to retirement accounts. I focus on putting money in CDs and money markets; she invests in stocks and mutual funds. Guess she sees more of the big picture since she's older...will I one day "get it?"
