Wow!! The percentage of food that is thrown away is way TOO high!! We have to find a way to reduce 40% to less. All we need to do is spread the word with this article. I know my family and I eat left over but as far as the extra food that we trash that can be used for food, we usually don’t bother. However, this Christmas I hope to use these ideas.
This article was intriguing. I had no idea of all those expenses for a baby!! It is definitely best to save money before bringing another living being into the world.
Awesome tips. Of course the first thing to remember is always save receipts for everything in case something goes wrong. It is pretty cool to know though that if you buy bigger items with a credit card, that they can be under extended warranty, I think thats a good enough reason to use one in itself.
I think in situations like these people tend to forego a little bit of extra effort and patience for more money, to just quickly and easily get rid of something. If you really think the extra couple grand is worth it, holding out and putting some time and effort into selling your car privately is definitely a good idea. I think its articles like these that put the bug in peoples head's about different things they can do so thanks.
I have a recipe for kale, potato and turkey sausage soup which is out of this world good. Will post it next week. It basically consists of the above and chicken broth. I add onions to it for more flavor. Good on colder days.
I'm signed up for the Uno's Insider Club and every week I receive coupons in my inbox for either a buy one get one free entree or $5 off of a $15 purchase. My boyfriend and I just get water to drink and then split a pizza or get a few yummy appetizers and then spend time together or visit with his parents after we get back from dinner.
Much of what you listed are convenience items that are totally unnecessary. It's your choice, but know that you are choosing a more expensive way to do things.
Pre-made individual formula servings, is it really that hard to scoop and pour? You make coffee the same way, why would it be any more difficult for formula?
You can buy a good (double, electric) pump for $300. And thanks to the Affordable Care Act, this is now a medical device that is tax deductible or covered in full by most insurance. My insurance will provide me with a Medela Pump In Style Advanced upon the birth of my infant.
Huge extra expense for guests? Are you hosting like the whole village or something? No one visiting your home after the birth of a baby should expect four star treatment. Put them to work doing that laundry and cleaning and send them to the store for milk and bread. And send them on their way after a few days or a week at most.
Deciding on a health insurance plan after your baby is born is a little bit too late. If pregnancy is even a remote possibility, you need to investigate this well beforehand and understand what your expenses will be.
For most plans, you will hit your out of pocket maximum regardless of what type delivery you have. A 2 day uncomplicated vaginal delivery is $14k at the hospital where I will go for care. A 4 day c-section charge is about $20k. My out of pocket maximum is $4k for family. So I will hit that either way.
Best frugal date idea.... Using the free movie tickets I got on Black Friday for purchasing clearance coffee that came out to $1.43 and using the free pizza coupon I got from Grimaldi's for my birthday in the same night to create dinner and a movie night for basically nothing.
I think that goverments around the world should make it mandatory that lenders offer a service to disadvantaged customers, say a one off loan (capped at a reasonable amount) over 12-18 months at the minimum acceptable level of interest (to the lender anyway)
Similar to credit unions but make sure that loans cannot overlap and that in a 3 year period, you are only allowed one loan. If you allow people to keep renewing the loan after 12-18 months then it just becomes another rollover product which is how people get into debt most of the time.
If governments did more to help, then people wouldn't have to ask friends or family every time they needed a helping hand.

For really good date nut bread use the cans that spaghetti sauce comes in---that fairly cheap stuff that sells at Walmart for about 1.00$ ---they are tall and lined with white smooth material that lets the bread come out without sticking. Make sure the BOTTOMS are the kind you can get off with a CAN OPENER!!!!! Not the rounded over type! Grease the cans and fill between 1/2 and 3/4 full, place on a cookie sheet (Upright) and bake. This will cause the bread to be a nice tubular shape and the tops--oh those TOPS!!!!!!! We fight over who gets the tops!
Slice off the top level with the can top---use a bread knife---and then turn can over and use can opener to cut the bottom off the can. Then use the can bottom to push the rest of the bread thru the tube. This lets you slice nice even slices of any thickness by using the edge of the can as your guide!
You can bake any kind of fairly dense bread in these. If you have any left over batter you can use cup cake pans with or without liners--and get tops that are almost as good as the can version.
Make sure you use the baking pan underneath tho as these can sometimes drop over the sides as they rise.
Sleep is underrated, but so valuable. I know I feel so much better and more equipped to make smart decisions about health when I'm well rested. Sleep can help you live a full lifespan, have a higher quality of life than without getting enough, and can help you make money as you'll be rested, alert, and energetic.
Check out museums when they're free. Or check out other free events in your area, such as concerts or movies in the park, etc. We don't do things like that regularly, so our "dates" are usually nicer-than-normal meals at home and a movie from the library or Netflix. Or we may switch babysitting with a friend and hit a cheap theater.
These are all great bits of advice, but I LOVE that you included number 3. For the past four years I've been volunteering at various charity centers around the holidays and it has made my whole holiday experience much more rewarding. Amidst the chaos of shopping for expensive gifts, it's a great way to give to those who are less fortunate, and remind ourselves of what the holidays are truly about and all that we have to be thankful for.
“kids growing up in that sort of atmosphere may be witnessing some unhealthy financial decisions. And they tend to act out those same behaviors.”
I absolutely agree that that is the probable reason that kids whose parents fight about money have more debt. It's not the fighting, it's the bad money habits that start the fights in the first place.
When you make sure to develop good habits with money such as budgeting and getting out of debt, it can eliminate money fights from your marriage for good. My wife and I have been out of debt for about 6 years now (except for the house) and we just don't argue about money at all. When kids see you handling money responsibly, they are more likely to follow suit as well.
I recently wrote an article on the subject that might be of interest:
Great advice. I'll be graduating college shortly so it's nice to have information about all different types of investments in one place, with pros and cons clearly defined. I'm already looking forward to getting started with my investments and improving my knowledge of the stock market, so now I'm just counting the days until graduation!
Fantastic article Max. I am going to try the candies peels this year. I have enough citrus cleanser going that I can use my peels for something else this month. Hope you like your cleanser as much as I do! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the "how to" guide. I removed myself from several websites, Radaris is now easier than in 2010, but Intelius and Zabasearch still require a faxed ID, which I declined.
I would guess that the most ruthless ones will win, unfortunately.
With so many transactions being completed during the holiday season, it can be easy to look track of your spending. With that being said, it makes it possible for people to overlook unauthorized transactions on their account from someone that has compromised your account. So, pay extra attention during the holiday season and make sure that you keep a record of all the places online and offline where you have completed a transaction.
I had a dripping hot tap. I went out for about an hour. When I returned the drip had turned into a completely perished valve, and the tap was bursting water at full pressure all over the flat. Not good. Extremely unlikely I would agree, but something I realise is possible. So my advice is YES FIX A LEAKING TAP!

My wife says no way now that we are a year from when this article was written. Can you still do this?
In my experience, I have spent considerably less and saved considerably more since my family stopped using credit cards.
