This is a great article, Ive made quite a few of these before. Another thing that works well besides socks is old pant legs. Ive recycled a couple pairs of old carharts made out of their duck fabric into some incredibly durable dog toys. I just gotta find a good cotton rope wholesaler, my dog shreds rope toys instantly but she loves them so much.
This person is correct in saying that tennis balls are not recommended for dogs! Of coarse tennis balls are frequently used, but this doesnt mean they are good or recommended for dogs. The problem with them is the abrasive fuzzy felt that covers them. It rubs the enamel off the dogs teeth incredibly quick which leaves them unprotected. This is why I always try to keep some of the chuckit balls on hand like these: http://www.amazon.com/Chuckit-Medium-2-Inch-2-Pack-Colors/dp/B00280MUXA/... or the ultra balls like these http://www.amazon.com/Chuckit-Ultra-Ball-Medium-2-5-inch/dp/B000F4AVPA/r...
they are super expensive compared to regular practice tennis balls but they are easier to keep track of because of the color and they dont destroy they dogs teeth like tennis balls.
Well said, Michael. In addition to the discipline that gets developed on the slow path, successfully finishing the journey leads to a great appreciation for what it feels like to be free of the burden of debt.
i hate when people say to take a class during the summer. not that i'm trying to attack you. it's only that summer is the one time of year that has nothing to do with school, and that's partly what makes it special. you have utter freedom rather than being tied down to a learning schedule
Absolutely, Sean. Taking the time to honestly understand how I got into debt - the behavioral factors and the attitudinal factors - was huge. When it comes to debt advice these days, I think there's way too much emphasis on tactics and not enough emphasis on understanding how a person got into debt in the first place.
What great ideas! You could have fun all summer long with just this list. I come from a family of 5, so we were always looking for things to do outside together. Because there were so many of us (and our friends), we were more easily able to do your #14 (Play Team Sports) than other kids I knew growing up.
I had never heard of that "couch surfing" before either... looks pretty neat!
We've rented for many years. The trade-off to simpler, cheaper living is having to live in such close proximity to inconsiderate fellow tenants. We're currently looking for a house to rent in order to get some peace and quiet and privacy!
We bought a partial share of season tickets to our local Triple-A baseball team (split with several other people at my husband's work). It was just enough games to be fun, but not so many that we got tired of it or felt like we were going "just to get our money's worth".
In rural Wyoming, high school sports are the big thing to attend. I try to make it down to Denver once every summer to take in a Colorado Rockies game, but it's a ten hour drive one way!
I've been to a few sporting events. I particularly enjoy high school or college basketball games. Very seldom have I been to professional sporting events because the ticket costs are too high. Once, as a kid, I went to Fenway Park and saw Ted Williams bat, then years later I attended another game at Fenway. I sat in the cheapest bleachers. It was fun.
Well, this is May, 2012, and I don't know if you'll get this but, I switched to organic on 2 occasions. And on both occasions, the same thing happened. I stopped craving and overeating. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't experience it myself. So, whatever anyone says..that non-organic is the same as organic, my experience is otherwise, so I absolutely trust my experience first. Actually, I have met a few others who experienced the same..so that was good to see it was not just me! Hope this helps someone too.
So far there is no indication that the Forgiveness Debt Relief Act will be extended, and if it is not extended, it will be interesting to see how many people receive unexpected notices from the IRS in 2013. Hopefully, real estate agents and other industry professionals will properly advise people of the tax implications of short selling their homes.
Loved your article. I think it's great that you didn't consider bankruptcy as the solution, but took responsibility for the debt and worked hard to pay it off a little at a time. If more people took this approach and didn't look for the easy way out, we'd be much better off as a country right now. The problem is most people run from challenges. What they don't realize is that if they will just take on the challenge and sacrifice for a while to pay off their debt, they'll develop the discipline they need to not let it happen again.
I've gotten free tickets from work to baseball and football games and been given gifts to games for birthdays or Christmas, but if it's my own money, I only go to minor league baseball games. I'm not the biggest baseball fan, but it's fun to sit so close to the game, to take my daughters who usually get a free baseball, free goodies at the gate and generally enjoy the outdoors. I can get great seats for $10 each, with no extravagant service charge like Ticketmaster.
You can tell that those who read personal finance blogs don't seem to be very representative of the country at large haha. I love sports in each and every way possible and will travel across the country to see my teams. In my personal opinion, going to see a Michigan Wolverines football game is the most fun you can have on earth, and I will go to a good game whenever possible. I live int he DC area and Nationals games are also pretty fun, and I will go to any other sporting event that I receive free tickets for of course haha.
great list - i love not giving money to the cable companies !!!

that is why the author said to check the law first
I love the Boston teams, so I'll ask friends to go in some tickets.

Like you on FB.
These days I probably go to 1 or 2 baseball games a year, and I rarely buy any stadium food. I never buy souvernirs there. So it isn't TOO expensive.
