Monica - you don't have to spend money. By law you're allowed to get it through https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ once a year. (You can even space them out like I do and check each one over the course of several months - as long as you don't check the same reporting agency twice). You're more likely to be hurting your credit score by not checking. If there are problems or errors, you'd never know.
I have reminders on Remember the Milk to check my credit report. I spaced them out so I might check Experian in May, Equifax in Sept and TransUnion in January. That way I don't have a lot to review at one time and I don't wait a full year before checking at least some information for problems.
I review them quarterly, that way I can still get my "three free" once a year. I've never had any issues with credit, which is a blessing, but I do keep an eye on the credit history just in case something were to come up.
I check one of the 3 free credit reports available every four months, so I am getting all 3 once a year. That way I can spot any problems and get it resolved quickly.
I agree with many of the comments made by Smoovious. There are an extremely large group of idiots that drive on our roads, and its that some areas there are considerably more than others. But, I must say that not all of these folks drive 4 wheelers, I run into an irrationally large number of semi truck and commercial drivers that seem to hold the same idiot tendencies. Example: 4 lane interstate (2 each way) guy in the truck decides to pass another trucker on an uphill grade, blocking both lanes of traffic and taking 2-3 miles to pass-- if you cant pass in a reasonable amount of time then don't even try. And then there's the trucker that thinks his big rig should run just as fast down the road as all the other idiots driving 80 mph with only a small pacing distance off a car in front. So although many truckers may be very professional, there are a lot of idiots in your ranks too. Albeit, probably not as many since they are required to uphold some additional degree of training.
About three times a year, beginning of the year (January), middle of the year (June), and at the end of the year (December) - utilizing the three free credit reports.
Three times a year - every four months I pull my free credit report from one of the agencies. I do them on a rotating basis so that I'm never completely out of the loop for an entire year. If I see something wrong on one of the reports, I plan to pull the other two at the same time, but that hasn't happened yet.
At a time where I was trying to increase my credit score, I checked my report monthly. The thing is....it didn't change all that much. The changes I was looking for only occur over time. From my experience, checking credit reports/scores once every 6 months or annually is sufficient. Unless there are big events taking place in my financial life (i.e. paying off a hefty loan, opening a new account, trolling for a mortgage), checking my report any more could be a waste of time and money.
These are some very valuable tips that some people probably don't even realize. Especially the "hanging around people who are materialistic". This is will burn a big hole in your pocket! I ran across this article which also gives valuable tips and ideas to save money http://www.nationalpayday.com/blog/index.php/money/quick-tips-to-keep-mo...! Where can I find good social connections to people who are also trying to save money, for encouragement and such?
I try to check my credit report ever 4 months or so. That way I can stay on top of it and get any inaccuracies fixed. The last time I checked it was last month.

I check all three once a year with the free credit reports we get from the government.
P.S. I liked you on Facebook! :o)
I never forget to review our credit reporst once a year because I do it at the same time as my federal and state taxes. :) It just makes sense to me!
