No, I don't use business cards, because I have a low-paid dead end pink collar job.

I was under the impression that recent research indicates or has lead the researches to believe that the ration of omega 6's to omega 3's (of whatever relevant type) is what actually makes a difference in cognitive function. Since some foods like almonds are actually very high in omega 6's, they might hurt rather than help the ratio.*

This is like a year old memory of an article I read covering research in a publication that was more scientific in nature than Wise Bread but still a popular source, so take this with a grain of salt.

I absolutely use business cards although not as often as pre-internet days. Many introductions are online. Dang these yung-ins!

I use business cards for the local chapter of my nursing organization. The organization is the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), and the local chapter is Volusia - Flagler. The card is a bright red orange which is the color of the sun in our logo, and the print including the logo is bold black. The card also has our meeting dates, which are the second Tuesday of the month and a invitation to join us. The card has been well received by individuals as well as national. I believe branding and logo recognition is key to getting the word out about your product.

  • Voluntary Slavery   14 years 33 weeks ago

Oh, I think the level of violence is much reduced. Especially the level of casual violence.

Yes, the police will still use unnecessary violence when they're arresting someone who has annoyed them—proxy violence for the wealthy and powerful. But violence in the workplace is way down from even 50 years ago.

There is now a niche for someone who refuses to be complicit in their own slavery. If you cut your expenses low enough that you don't need a regular job, you really will be left alone—not chained up and put to work.

I used them before I retired, but no longer do.

    No, not yet.

  • Dumpster-Diving 101: 6 Strategies for Success   14 years 33 weeks ago

I worked at several TV/film studios in Hollywood over the years and found UNBELIEVABLE things in the dumpsters on the studio lots -brand new office products, books sent from publishers to producers for consideration for movie projects, clothing, food, props, furniture, tools, electronics, on and on;some very iconic stuff -once found an old metal movie reel.

IMHO the violence aspect of the modern slavery has never went away. It got obfuscated, proxied and delayed, but the end effect is still the same.

  • Voluntary Slavery   14 years 33 weeks ago

You mean you're on your way to being a slave to the weather, fields and animals. Slave to bad smells, physical exhaustion and pain on a daily basis and more "freedom".

Anyone idiotic enough to think the life of a yeoman involves more free choices than that of a wage slave obviously has never tried it.

I always enjoy reading your pieces, Phillip, and this one was no different. Thoughtful and thought-provoking.
I find that, for me and my family, a lot of our "self-sufficiency" comes from stepping back from cultural norms enough to question them. When you take the first steps of mental/intellectual freedom (analyzing and choosing carefully rather than accepting blindly) you're on your way to getting out of that voluntary slavery altogether.

  • Suze Orman's Approved Card Gets Mixed Reviews and Controversy   14 years 33 weeks ago

It concerns me that a "financial" planner would encourage someone to purchase a product which they have a vested interest in. Anytime there ia "brand" name attached to a product then the powers behind the scene are not going to allow it to be used by the mainstream unless there is a profit to be made. I think it is disingenuous of Ms. Orman to act as though this product has any real value other than to set a limit on the amount of cash you may have access to at any given time. I could do that with the savings account I currently have in a credit union.

Thanks, Kate, for putting all of this together for us in one piece. I'll be referencing your article for years to come, and with these memory tips, I'll be able to remember where I placed your article.:o)

  • The Tyranny of Stuff   14 years 33 weeks ago

I always remind myself that if I bring it home I'm going to be responsible for caring for it and what if I get tired of it and it ends up in the landfill? It's good to have that awareness as to where all this "stuff" is going to eventually end up.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Use Business Cards? (Special $100 Giveaway)   14 years 33 weeks ago

I have business cards printed but hardly ever use them. I got married 9 months ago and didn't change my name on the cards, so it always seems silly to cross off the old last name and write the new one. I should really get on reprinting those...

  • The Tyranny of Stuff   14 years 33 weeks ago

Sadly, many of my relatives don't ask what we might want or need and simply present us with unwanted, unusable, un-storable crap. I actually dropped the gifts off at the thrift store on the way home from one such family celebration this year, but that felt much better than it would have felt dragging it into our home.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Use Business Cards? (Special $100 Giveaway)   14 years 33 weeks ago

I don't use business cards currently but I hope to in the future! I just haven't had a need for them yet.

  • Voluntary Slavery   14 years 33 weeks ago

Here again, I guess I don't see it as an absolute.

A level of taxation that meant people needed to choose between paying their taxes and keeping a roof over their heads, or putting food on their table, or paying the pharmacist for their prescriptions would be evil.

But just like you don't need to be completely self-sufficient in order to largely free yourself from the voluntary slavery of our current wage/debt system, I don't think the tax rate needs to be zero before you can be free.

  • Voluntary Slavery   14 years 33 weeks ago

"The true evil of slavery is that it denies people their freedom."
In that case, do you consider taxation to be evil? After all, the money that employees earn for the first few months of the year (as a percentage) must be paid to the government and they don't have the freedom to not do so unless want to be eventually imprisoned for tax evasion.

I don't know if this is just something that has happened to me, but my cell phone has made me dumb and forgetful. Since it keeps track of number and addresses I tend to forget these things. What I've done is forced myself to dial a number instead of just clicking on someone's name. This has helped me improved my memory. I had to start this after I found myself stranded without knowing any numbers.

  • How to Go on a Financial Detox   14 years 33 weeks ago

Love the comparison, both your health and finances are very important! A good detox, for either, should help you get back on track. Since I've nixed my bad money habits, I tend to thoroughly look at my fiances twice a year. Once at the end of the year and once in the spring. I do weekly check up as well just to make sure I'm on track with my budget.

  • 10 Monthly Bills You Can Slash   14 years 33 weeks ago

I think what we need to remember is we all have our small luxuries. What one person considers over-the-top-splurge, I consider a great tool. Case in point, Smartphones. I just got one last year and it's worth the extra $30 a month for 2 Smartphone data plans. We are truly enjoying it and it's helped us read reviews online and see prices before we buy. And to be able to send a quick email on the go, keep track of to-do lists, or entertain my child, it's priceless. We just have to choose wisely. Instead of a pricey $100+ cable package, we have Netflix and high-speed internet. And to make up for those bills, we go without a landline and shop wisely and never have paid a penny on credit cards. We just got a new h20 heater and take quick showers.

We take preventative care of our health, use a coffee press (starbucks is maybe once every year or 2, if that). Household items like toilet paper/paper towel/baggies are always generic. Whatever we buy that's remotely haggle-able, I haggle. We contest every fee & thoroughly think before any purchase. We use what we have in the house unless a purchase is really needed. We go to the thrift store. We make 99% of our food at home and love it the healthy way.

Do any of these things and you're ahead. I can tell you it worked for us because we paid off our GIANT (cha ching!) student loan in 2 years on 1 income. You can too! :)

P.S. how do you sign up for this website and get a user name/password, I can't find it anywhere! Thanks.

I agree- coupons, on the whole, are for abysmal packaged foods. There's a rare occasional Whole wheat cracker or coffee creamer coupon or something like that, but in general, it's not good for you.

Great idea to write down info about the person on the back of their card. I love that tip!
