Green Living
I have four copies of Big Green Purse to give away. In it, Diane MacEachern offers a simple message: Use your spending power to create a cleaner, greener world. Of course, many of us simply can't afford to go green all the time. Diane MacEachern focuses on items that make the most impact, highlights eco-cheap money saving strategies, and reveals marketing techniques that try to sell "greenwash" products that aren't really green.

There are many tips that help increase your car's mpg, including things like removing items from your trunk, inflating your tires, and keeping your engine in good condition with regular maintenance. But out of all the suggestions, there was only one thing that skyrocketed the mileage on my 2001 Civic from 32 to 47 mpg. I slowed down.

I read this book because I was intrigued by the 25 year-old author. By the time she was eight years old, she was earning money by operating a lemonade stand in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter. On her 10th birthday, she used the $100 of gift money she received to purchase a Government Savings Bond. At age 14, she bought her first mutual funds. Four years later, she was investing in stocks.

Most of us understand that "thread count" indicates the quality of linen. The higher the thread count, the softer, smoother, and more luxurious the sheets. But the class action lawsuit against Bed Bath & Beyond has revealed a dirty little secret manufacturers do to inflate the thread count of their product. Make sure you know exactly what you're buying.

Sometimes being able to get things done isn’t just about time management or motivation. Sometimes it’s not because of laziness, being unfocused or disorganized. I've found that the most effective productivity trick is simply to get enough sleep. I know it took me a long time to get out of that college mentality of sleeping late, taking naps throughout the day, and sleeping in on the weekends. Now my sleep schedule is consistent, no matter what day of the week. Share your best productivity advice in the comments and be entered into a random drawing for a $25 Amazon Gift Certificate!

I honestly don't know what my dream job would be. I started with wanting to be an actress to producer (my last job squashed any glamorous visions of the Entertainment industry), to psychiatrist to writer and now...I don't know. All I know for sure is what I don't want to do:
have a long commute
spend all day doing things that don't matter to me
not have any decision making abilities on the projects I'm completing
work for someone I don't respect
doesn't challenge me daily and help me grow into a better person in general
What I'm doing to get my dream job: I'm not doing any of the above.

I thought I knew what the rules for tipping were. When I'm at a restaurant, my standard is to pay double the tax (comes out to 16.5% where I am). I'll give 20% if it was a super meal with super service (and I'm not that hard to please). I give my stylist and esthetician at least 20% because they're awesome and they're *relatively* cheap compared to others I've been to. I'll tip the car wash guys $3-$5 because I know they're not getting paid well and I hate washing cars.

Let me start by making one thing clear: I do not think it is wrong to eat meat. It's not because I believe God gave us "dominion" over everything on Earth either. It's because I've watched shows on Discovery; I've seen
Planet Earth. Nature doesn't blink an eye when it comes to one species eating another. So I'm not a newly converted vegan animal rights activist condemning all meat eaters. I just think there is a lot of information about the real and true cost of meat that most people aren't aware of. It might make you think twice before buying that $0.99 whopper. And that's all I could hope for. We should want to be able to make informed decisions that affect our personal health, public health, the environment, the animals we use for food, and legislation in our country.

This continues from "The Cost of Meat—Too High To Pay." The Personal Health Argument attempts to show that there is few, if any, benefit from eating meat. This will cover heart disease, cancer, and calcium intake.
While the meat/dairy industry would have us believe we need both in every meal to have a balanced diet, many studies have shown a high correlation between meat/dairy consumption and major health problems, including heart disease and cancer. Significant decrease in health problems have been associated with moving to a plant-based diet.

This continues from "The Cost of Meat—Too High To Pay." The Public Health Argument covers the methods used by factory farms to boost production and profits at the cost of public health. The topics covered will be food-borne illness, irradiation, the use of antibiotics and growth hormones, and the feed we give to the animals we eventually eat ourselves. full story
