Every so often, I get hit in the face with two facts. First, Americans (even poor Americans) are unbelievably rich. Second, Americans (as a group) utterly lack a cultural tradition that teaches us how to eat a healthy, frugal diet.

When it comes to bargain produce items, it’s hard to beat raisins. And since they can be stored without refrigeration, they are an excellent candidate for bulk purchasing. The problem? As usual, Philip has done a great job of analyzing both market and industry as they apply to consumer choice. And as I'm sure you all noted in his article, exercising that choice involves a cost issue. Eggs are a staple for many of us. The price of them, while not completely outrageous, has been on the rise for some time now. The problem is there are so many fun ways to serve them, that cutting back too harshly will be a challenge for those of us who love them. I’ve put together a list of ways to cut corners without feeling the pinch, as well as a list of “eggcellent” menu suggestions. Read on, and tell me what you think.

Tis the season for soothing, hearty homemade soups. With as much as people pay for this stuff at the deli counter (and don't get me started on the prices and ingredient lists for canned), it's not hard to see how serving this stuff up at home just makes good "soup cents". Grocery store cheese prices seem to be on the rise lately, at least in my neck of the woods. The warehouse stores are where I've found the best prices, and the large blocks of mozzarella cheese still seem to be available at around the two dollar a pound mark. Whether you like to shred it all in advance to store in the freezer, shave it off a bit at a time for deli sandwiches, or just cut it up and chow down, here are ten more ways to enjoy this stuff (and its price) that even the single folks can use.

Who says that there's no such thing as a free lunch - you probably have one growing in your yard! Think twice before loading up your garden or lawn with herbicides; many weeds are edible, and delicious. Best of all, they're free!

Have you guys ever seen Taco Town? C'mon, the parody of supersizing that is way too funny and agonizingly close to reality? Well, I've embedded it below for you all to catch up on, but the real reason for this post are the tribute videos that followed.
Taco Town, famous for its "taco wrapped in a taco, wrapped in a pizza, wrapped in a pancake and deep fried" was insanely funny. But to my surprise, many frugal fans out there have tried to copy this cheap and nasty meal. Who am I to say anything about clogging arteries and cholesterol levels?
First, the original...I laugh every time.

Let me clarify something. I'm no huge fan of the Golden Arches. I'd much rather have a nice tray of sushi. But this is Wisebread and it's our job to cater to bargain-hunters everywhere. And in fulfilling that aim, I came across GHETTO MAC!
What on earth is GHETTO MAC?
You know, it astounds me of the great lengths some people will go to for a bargain. At roughly $3.39 for just the Big Mac sandwich, a couple of ingenious fellas with a lack of funds decided they could beat the McSystem. Maybe you could make a Big Mac (sort of) with the basic Double Cheeseburger from the $1 menu. Clever huh?

Will alerted me that the inventor of instant noodles, Momofuku Ando, died over the weekend. I was sorry to hear it; mind you, the man was 96 years old.
Is Momofuku not the greatest name ever?
Ramen has been a long time favorite of mine, harkening back to my childhood, when they were an easy snack with what seemed at the time, like an exotic twist. I was allowed to eat them with chopsticks, an honor not bestowed upon very many other foods in our household, although twirling the noodles around a fork was equally delightful. My favorite flavor was, and probably still is, pork.

I just started to clean out my fridge, and had to suppress a shudder at some of the things that I found towards the back. Food that hadn’t already grown two legs and left my kitchen in its on volition was snarling menacingly from the “crisper”, which in this case was holding a bin of limp celery and what was once probably kale.
