Personal Finance, Frugal Living, Life Hacks, Shopping, Consumer Affairs

After weeks of comparison shopping, internet research, and a rising temperature and near-drowning humidity, we were prepared to take the plunge. Our anti-air-conditioning ways were soon to change. I sent my husband to pick up the portable model we had dreamed of, only to find that we had missed the big sale by one day. Were we just out of luck?

Is It the End of 6% Real Estate Commissions?

Posted 7 weeks 1 day ago by Xin Lu

Personal Finance, Real Estate and Housing

This week the Justice Department reached an antitrust settlement with the National Association of Realtors that is meant to spur competition and bring down the standard 6% commission that comes with each real estate transaction. Basically, the NAR is no longer able to withhold the information on multiple listing services from discount online brokers such as Redfin and ZipRealty. Will consumers like us see a huge deduction in real estate transaction prices soon?

When’s a good time to buy Australian wine? Now. And hurry.

Posted 41 weeks 1 day ago by Ed O'Reilly

Food and Drink

When I first moved to Australia I noticed 2 things about the wine: there was a lot to choose from, and it costs twice as much (if not more) than the exact same Australian wine brands I’d bought back in NY. The selection is mostly a great variety from Australian and New Zealand vineyards, and the price is largely due to taxes. But thankfully, because of a glut in production, there was good wine to be found at a more reasonable price in cleanskins .But now it looks like the days of the $7 bottle of wine are drying up.

Memory Foam

I couldn't resist this deal, and just had to share it. We've had our King Size bed for almost 7 years now, and although it's holding up well it's not as great as it used to be. But Amazon is almost giving away these expensive 2 INCH thick memory foam toppers, which means my sleep is about to get a whole lot better again.

Best Time For Summer Shopping In Europe!

miss selfridge jacket

Did your high season European flight take a huge chunk out of your savings? Well, at least the shopping doesn't have to be as painful, even with the weak dollar conversion rates. Many countries in Europe, France being the most evident with their "soldes", have government regulated retail sales. This means they can only slash retail prices twice a year, which results in mega summer and winter reductions.

Wedding Dresses for Under $200

Target is offering wedding dresses for under $200!

Now, I've been griping lately about imported Chinese goods. These Isaac Mizrahi gowns are probably sewn in sweatshops in Asia, so mentioning them here isn't meant as a promotion per se. That said, I still find it fascinating.

Buy a drink, get a free Whopper - every single day?

Did your mom always nag you to keep your receipts? Mine did. She'd see me charge something to a credit card and then casually toss away the receipt, and I'd get an immediate lecture about what it means to keep track of my expenses yada yada yada (Mom actually included the yada's). Frankly, budgeting has never been an issue for me, even when I was close to the poverty line, and receipts seemed to be a wallet-cluttering nuisance. But that all changed for me recently, and now I treasure receipts because they are kind of convenience that is rare - they are pre-cut coupons.

How I Got Over My Haggling Hatred

Posted 1 year ago by Andrea Dickson

I used to really hate haggling. That vain, self-conscious part of me that doesn't want to appear cheap, or worse, stingy, has always had an aversion to haggling. As I've gotten older, though, I've come to realize that it's a necessary evil, and who doesn't love a little bit of evil?
