Some people are suckers for bargains of any kind. Others, well, even a genuine FREE offer is difficult for them to take up. But most of us, myself included, have a magic number. It’s in the form of a percentage printed on wonderful clearance sticker, and it is scary how many times it has pulled me in like a tractor beam.

After weeks of comparison shopping, internet research, and a rising temperature and near-drowning humidity, we were prepared to take the plunge. Our anti-air-conditioning ways were soon to change. I sent my husband to pick up the portable model we had dreamed of, only to find that we had missed the big sale by one day. Were we just out of luck?

Personal Finance, Real Estate and Housing
This week the Justice Department reached an antitrust settlement with the National Association of Realtors that is meant to spur competition and bring down the standard 6% commission that comes with each real estate transaction. Basically, the NAR is no longer able to withhold the information on multiple listing services from discount online brokers such as Redfin and ZipRealty. Will consumers like us see a huge deduction in real estate transaction prices soon?

Food and Drink
When I first moved to Australia I noticed 2 things about the wine: there was a lot to choose from, and it costs twice as much (if not more) than the exact same Australian wine brands I’d bought back in NY. But thankfully, because of a glut in production, there was good wine to be found at a more reasonable price in cleanskins .But now it looks like the days of the $7 bottle of wine are drying up.

Shopping
Did your high season European flight take a huge chunk out of your savings? Well, at least the shopping doesn't have to be as painful, even with the weak dollar conversion rates. Many countries in Europe, France being the most evident with their "soldes", have government regulated retail sales. This means they can only slash retail prices twice a year, which results in mega summer and winter reductions.

Target is offering wedding dresses for under $200!
Now, I've been griping lately about imported Chinese goods. These Isaac Mizrahi gowns are probably sewn in sweatshops in Asia, so mentioning them here isn't meant as a promotion per se. That said, I still find it fascinating.
