One of my close friends at work can often be heard saying “man, if only I had the F.U. money.” By that, of course, he means that if he had enough money to not care about losing his job, he could say what was really on his mind and do what he wanted to do.

I remember the first time my sister’s Barbie went for a ride in her new pink convertible. The trunk was full of new shoes, the coolest outfits, and luggage for a long trip away. We laughed as we discussed all the fun things Barbie would do on her trip. She was after all, living the American dream, and I couldn’t wait to be old enough to live mine.

Instead of a how-to article, or even a "Top 10" list, I want to tell you part of my own story. I've tried to put this into a list, tried to make it into something else, and I just keep coming back to the story. There's something about this story that is true: far more true than any list or set of steps. So this is for all of you out there who (like me!) learn better through stories than anything else.
