When I was a young lad, eating out was something of a luxury for my family. Most of our meals, at least 95%, were prepared and eaten at home. This was the model for most people my age or older. But these days, society has migrated to eating out of the home way more often. The result is that we’re spending a lot more on food than we used to. So, are there ways to chop the bill and eat out for less? You bet.

Eat This, Not That! analyzed and graded 66 different chain restaurants, and came up with a list of America's Unhealthiest Restaurants. It goes to show how easy it is to underestimate the amount of calories in a seemingly simple meal. Here are the restaurants that topped the charts with calories and fat content per serving.

When we make big purchases or large financial commitments -- a car, a home, college tuition -- at some point in that process, we actually have to sit down. Why don't do we do that more often?

As a professional ad man, I'm ashamed to say that I'm really not good at advertising, well, me. That goes double in social situations. I never know where to stand, how to eat, how to engage people in an interesting way, even shaking hands never really seems to go as well as I'd hoped. And I am rotten at remembering names. In a world obsessed with first impressions, knowing just how to act can be your ticket to fortune and glory.

Are you a cheap and lazy bastard? Go out for dinner a lot because you can't be bothered with cooking? I'm sure you've heard how to save money by shopping with a grocery list or through budgeting. But you know what? You don't have to; you can be incredibly lazy and still eat well for very little (while avoiding Top Ramen). Dine at home and save a bunch on food without ever making a shopping list.

One of my best friends, a long time ago, told me that the key to food portion sizes was this - "Eat from small plates, drink from taller glasses." It's a piece of advice I had forgotten, especially after moving to the US where portion sizes seem to have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. But in a book I'm currently reading called "Mindless Eating" this advice about container sizes is validated by Dr. Brian Wansink, Ph.D, a man who clearly knows his stuff. And optical illusions are at the root of it all.
