Life Hacks, General Tips, Making Extra Cash
The snow has melted. The kids are gone to grandma's. Sounds like the best (and most frugal) thing to do this April would be to stay home and clean, organize, and sell all that crap lurking in every corner of the house and garage. A few potential karmic trades might be lurking around the house too.

Making Extra Cash
Unclaimed Property consists of cash and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned after an owner cannot be located within a specified period of time. This property may be cash, bonds, stocks, gift certificates, and contents of safety deposit boxes (jewelry, documents, etc.) The amazing thing about unclaimed property is that it is just that – unclaimed. It still belongs to the rightful owner, and by law, all they need to do is ask for it to regain possession. But how does one go about finding out about it in the first place?

In my journey from being a North American Entrepreneur to a Professional Hobo, I had to shed a lot of crap. For the purposes of this article I will focus on the process (which proved to be quite effective) of shedding the physical junk that clutters our lives. This process is great not only for people wanting to make drastic changes in their lives like I did, but also for the average bear who needs to downsize the amount of stuff they have.

Most online shoppers I know are very familiar with Ebay and Amazon. The problem is that the hardcore Ebayers are not very familiar with the Amazon Marketplace. Those faithful to Amazon third-party sellers are put off by Ebay. By carefully studying the markets of both retailers, it is possibly to not only get the best deal, but make some money in the process!

I'm not the type to fall for scams, generally. Thus far, I've never been really screwed over on eBay or anything. But I can totally see how people COULD fall for an eBay scammer.
Here are some tips for avoiding getting scammed by an eBay hacker. Below that is my story about a recent brush with an eBay hacker.

If you're anything like me, you hate opening your mailbox to see a whole pile of junk mail waiting for you. Credit Card offers (more on those in part 2 of this series ), fake checks from mortgage firms, endless reams of useless coupons and, of course, the trusty 1lb envelope of garbage from ValPak. But a friend recently told me of a hidden gem inside the ValPak envelope. A gem that's worth at least $20.
The voucher that's like Wonka's golden ticket.
Inside ValPak envelopes (depending on your zip code) is a voucher from Northwest Airlines. It looks something like the picture below (I apologize for the poor quality, it's the best pic I could find anywhere on the web).

Ed's post about moving and getting rid of stuff got me thinking about my clutter. Are you barely able to breathe in your cluttered household? Have tons of stuff that you need to get rid of?
A few weeks ago, I took a seminar called "Commanding Your Clutter" at a local community college. Here's what I learned about collecting, hoarding, shopping, and finally, letting go of all that junk.
Most people who hold onto things for the following reasons:
I paid so much for it! Yes, but are you getting your money's worth from it? No? Sell it.

If you ever want to take stock of all that you’ve worked hard to purchase over time, and how much stuff you
think you need to hang on to, go through each and every possession you own and decide what to keep and what to sell, or give away. You might be surprised at how attached you are to your stuff.
I’m, of course, talking about packing up and moving.

As an ebay shopper, this is a heavenly find for me (and I thank my wife for introducing me to it). Basically, it all revolves around taking advantage of typos, misspellings and other human errors in ebay listings. And I'm all about taking advantage.
Here's the deal
Occasionally, I've accidentally stumbled upon great deals because the listing had a spelling error. For example, ADIADS instead of ADIDAS. Or APLE instead of APPLE. People are not searching for that term as they generally spell it correctly themselves in the search engine.

In addition to my myriad of other addictions, I am an eBay shoe addict. Oh, sure, I'll go to Target to get my fix every now and then. But with eBay, I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to see anyone else wearing the same shoes as me.
And oh, lordy, the kinds of shoes that you can find on eBay!

Amy Doan (aka Shrinkle) is a designer and entreprenuer whose work I came across quite by accident. Amy's been selling her fashionable creations on eBay for over 6 years. Her self-described "Trashy Clothes for Classy Hos" have accrued a cult following all over the world. A mixture of unique fabrics, thrift-store finds, and lots and lots of ribbon, Amy's punky-girly-gothy threads are so unique that even an old fogey like me can appreciate her artistry and keen eye for detail.

What would you say if I told you that I filled my entire living room with completely original works of art for less than $300? We're not talking kid's stuff - no crayon drawings, no attempts at self-expression. Art by real and struggling artists, both schooled and self-taught?
You'd tell me that I am truly a brilliant shopper, right?
Thank you.

EBay is an imperfect system, simply because for the most part it is run on non-binding contracts. You can’t make people who bid on your items pay, even though by bidding, they’re under “legal” contract to pay. EBay could solve this problem by charging buyers' credit cards (which they have on file) once they hit the “confirm purchase” button. But they don’t want to take that responsibility. I guess that would also give them another fee to charge sellers for.

Ebay is a fabulous resource for so many people. Not only can you find almost anything, but you can usually get it a whole lot cheaper. Usually.
There are, of course, many ways for the savvy shopper to turn that ‘usually’ into an ‘always’ and in the case of Ebay, it’s sniping an auction using Bidnip.com.

EBay can be the discount shopper’s paradise. It’s where you can find like-new electronics, brand new designer clothes and accessories, and anything else your heart might desire, most of the time for a fraction of their retail price. Well, that’s the idea anyway. I’ve seen some crazy buyer activities that make me wonder if some think they’re at Sotheby’s bidding on an original Picasso. EBay can be a tourist trap for the impulsive, competitive, and impatient shopper. But if you follow a few simple rules, eBay can be a gold mine of saved dollars.

PayPal is a necessary evil. As a seller on eBay, it’s impossible to avoid using it. How they are able to do what they do (take money from sellers’ accounts whenever they want) is beyond me but it’s a brilliant business plan. Unlike credit cards where if you report a fraudulent charge or unsatisfactory transaction it’s the credit card company that pays for it, PayPal just moves money between accounts taking no responsibility for fraud charges. They’re just the judge in the de facto court of eBay justice.

I’m getting married in less than 4 weeks. If it weren’t for the Internet, I wouldn’t be having a wedding. Or, rather, I’d be having half a wedding, because that would be all I’d be able to afford. But with the help of some thoughtful friends and a few easy Internet search techniques, I am having a whole wedding at about half the price I would have paid without the deals I found online.

Think of your listing like you would going into an interview. You have a limited amount of time (space) to sell yourself (item) to an employer (buyer) who will have to decide between you and quite a few other candidates. You highlight your strengths and brush over the weaknesses. You offer references. You follow through. You are quick, clear, accurate, and concise. Here is a checklist to making an effective listing on eBay.
